Having recently converted from film SLR's to digital I was simply amazed at the choice available to the budding photographer in the digital field. Not being especially blessed with funds it was obvious that I would have to choose from the so called pre-owned market. Being a user of Canon for a number of years I had several lens's in my possession, thus I opted to plump for a Canon DSLR> Which one to choose? Perusing several web sites which gave both limited and in depth reviews of most if not all of the DSLR's available, my choice narrowed down to the Canon D60 or their 10d. Both being similar camera's with the same sensor and 6 million plus pixels, and both seeming having similar operating features and layout, I chose the 10D as its chassis was entirely metal and not a mixture of plastic and metal. The camera is a joy to use having a very fimilar layout to my film SLR's, and I must say that the photo's that I have taken to date do not disappoint in any way whatsoever, and are certianly on par with non digital film particularly reversal film. Some might say that digi photo's are better than film photo's and I certainly cannot argue with that!!!! A good buy?? Most definitely YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have recently upgraded to a 30D and cannot tell the difference between captured images. The 10D's 3 Frames Per Second were more than enough for all my captures. With a BGED3 attached this camera feels like it's built to sit in your hands. I started off only shooting Jpeg's but am glad I moved over to RAW and this camera provided the perfect opportunity to learn how. From the fully programmable mode to the expert modes this camera will walk you through each in easy to understand steps. Review ID: 10000000004071146 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 03/06/09 by: I have owner a Canon EOS 100 camera for many years.Profesionaly, befof I retired>The canon gave me everything I required from a Camera.Flexability.quality.and results equal to many more expensive cameras.Having brought a small digital camers,of high quality.I became disalusioned .It was slow, too small and did not suit my large hands and my personallity.SO i looked around.I decided on Canon, because I have canon lens and equipment.I started at the bottom with the D30 and D60.Good camers but limited. My EOS 100 was better.ThenI looked at the 10D/20D and 30d.deciding that was as far as I was prepaired to go in price. The specification of the 10D was great. The 20 and 30D were a little better in specification.but I did not think the increase in price over a 10D,was warrented. So I looked in EBAY for some weeks, looking at prices that they were going fof,After several trys at bidding, being out bib because of price,I was sucessful, and became the proud owner of a !10D camera. The sellers description was modist. The camera exceeding my expectations.Near mint condition, with a standard lens, and full backup from the seller.Having used the camera for some weeks,I am very pleased with my decision. The camera is heavy, heaver than my EOS 100.but about the same size.A lot more complicated, with much more to learn. But you can use it in a point and shoot mode, with no problems, and obtain outstanding results. The 6.5 megapixels gives more than enough resolution for prints upto A3 sixe, and more if you only enlarge a portion of the frame. It has given me a new lease of life to my photography. It takes all my lens's and equipment,my onlt disapointments have been due to my inability to understand the complexity of the camera. With digital this is a small price to pay.No film costs, and printing costs.Just delite what you do not require and keep the rest.I love this camera, and I am amased at the sofistication and complixity of it.I discover something new every time I use it.I havenot found a downside to it.Maybe its too large and heavy to put in your pocket, and with extra lens you need a bag.But If you are like me a keen photographer, looking for excelence in your pictures.then look at one of these. You would not be disapointed.I still talk to my seller, gleenig information and advice when required.Great Camera,Great buy, what more could you require. Build quality seemed better then the more modern budget SLRs (350D) Took some really nice pictures then broke. Only had it working for 2 weeks, took about 100 shots and 'Err 99' every time you take a picture. Wouldn't recommend, they're getting on now. It seems 'Err 99' is a very common failure. Guy I bought it from told me to go away, so a waste of money! Review ID: 10000000012217467 Was this review helpful? Report this review Bought this off ebay with a faulty shutter button - repaired that but for some reason after putting the camera back together found the pop up flash had stopped working. Tried everything apart from buying a new flash circuit board from Canon (which they had run out of) so I gave up and resold it at a loss (as usual). This camera is getting on a bit now, is built like a tank and weighs as much - its all very well having a nice metal body but you do get a bit weary lugging it around. The pictures have always come out soft on these cameras, even at the max sharpness setting (I have had more than one and they are all the same!!) - I like my pictures to be sharp straight out of the camera. The colours look more natural though, much better than newer cameras which seem over saturated. I've had my fill of Canon for now, have gone back to Nikon with a D50. You get good sharp pictures out of this and it doesn't weigh a ton!! Phil Review ID: 10000000011905409 Was this review helpful? An excellent camera, not the top of the range model but not that different to the EOS 5 except for the size of the sensor, and therefore the magnifying effect on focal lengths of lenses. Fast shutter speed of 1/4000 sec and wide ISO range although some noise at top end of range. Accepts a range of canon add on options and lenses and is also well supplied by 3rd party suppliers. All the features you need, simple to handle and a better build than the 300, 350, 400 etc. Good focusing screen, at 6.3 mega-pixels will cover most of your needs. Easy to use and produces excellent photographs, which can easily be enlarged to A3 on a good quality printer. The chip gives a magnification of 1.6 times, compared to a full frame 35mm camera. You need to be aware that this will not accept EFS lenses from canon, which excludes some of the cheaper lenses available, but all the recent non brand lenses should fit.Adding the BG-ED3 vertical grip enhances the feel of the camera and makes portrait work far easier to achieve. As a second hand proposition you cannot go far wrong. you don`t need much more than 6.3 mega-pixels unless you are blowing up to exceptionally large sizes or cropping heavily, and that is best done using the lens, that is the point of using an SLR after all. There have been various tweeks to performance on later models, and screen size has grown, and live view is available on the latest additions, but the cost difference is large, and what you really need to do is get snapping and leave some cash for a good selection of lenses. I would whole heartedly recommend to anyone, and if you are a die hard film user, take the plunge, hold on to your EOS lenses and you will be amazed at how good it is. Although released back in 2003, the Canon EOS 10D is still an extremely well put together semi-professional digital SLR camera by today's standards. Back then, the camera sold for around $1,500.- whereas today it can be found online for less than a fifth of that price -- definitely a steal. It is solid and fits the hand much better than any three-digit Canon model. In fact, you may do without a battery grip unless you shoot vertical most of the time and/or you have some very heavy lenses. On the other hand, all Digital Rebels *must* be fitted with a grip to make handling comfortable. The 10D is also easy to operate, and very reliable. Contrary to popular belief, the relatively small pixel count is far from being a disadvantage, as it provides very good sensitivity with low noise. Also, it keeps file size down (a RAW file with an embedded JPEG rarely exceeds 7 MB). The only disadvantages I can see are: - the small viewfinder (~115k pixels, 1.8") - incompatibility with EF-S lenses - slow writing speed (regardless of the type of CF card used, the camera will write and read back images at ~1.5 MB/sec, which loses time if you're in the practice of zooming in to review each shot after taking it. However if you are an experienced photographer with many EF lenses in the bag, who knows his shoots, and/or if you shoot in JPEG, none of the above should bother you too much. All in all, it is an ideal camera for a newcomer to digital photography, or as a second body when there is no time to switch lenses. I am enjoying my EOS 10D every minute that I have it in my hands. Aquired for my Daughter as an introduction to DSLR photography Pro build and features (albeit now slightly dated), It is the semi pro model counterpart of the 300D which despite its plastic body and inferior feature set always seems to make more money at auction than the 10D! 6Mp is more than sufficient for decent poster sized images if used with care, If you feel a need for more megapixels then the 20D, 30D and 40D are also available increasing in price as you go. I paid £130 for a good 10D in very good condition and added Canons cheapest but arguably one of their sharpest lenses in the 50mm F1.8 This gave my daughter a combination that has produced razor sharp perfectly exposed images that massively exceeded her previous attempts with a compact camera despite the lack of zoom 10D, 20D 30D 40D these are the semi pro magnesium alloy bodied versions of the mainstream 300D/350D/400D - buy the best you can afford but the 10D is an exceptionally high quality but budget entry point to DSLR photography. With out real reason other than it being the first digital SLR that I really wanted. Now having got one I love it, it is perhaps not as good as some of the newer offings from Canon, it's a tad slower to start up, but it's 6mp is plently for all I need, in fact it is enough for all except professional image makers. You will see a better image from a great lens than a sightly bigger sensor! Review ID: 10000000009894215 Was this review helpful? Report this review I have been thinking of going digital for a while; the Canon EOS10D is a lovely camera, it feels solid in hand, and has a good balance about it; it has an APS sensor, and you need to be aware of the need to multiply the focal length of the usual EF lenses by 1.6. The camera feels so good, the standard kit lens does not do it justice. Review ID: 10000000009672874 Was this review helpful? I always had SLR film cameras in the past and this is just amazing. It needs a lot of patience to learn to get the best from it and you have to read the manual a good few times to get the best from the camera. But hey if you want to point and shoot go to Argos and buy a little one. 6 Million pixels is not a lot but test shots I have taken get up to A3 with no noticable pixelation and I have gone a lot further than that on screen. I love it. Review ID: 10000000008789513 Was this review helpful? It offers the options of using completely automatically, completely manually or a combination of your own preferences. As with all digital SLRs is it quite heavy duty but has a feeling of strength and ruggedness to it. It is very similar to the 1D, offering anything you could possibly need up to a mid-professional level, but a far more affordable option for those of us who aren’t ready to scale up into the thousands of pounds bracket just yet! Being a Canon also gives it access to an excellent range of lenses, and I have found that the majority of my friends, teachers and colleagues shoot Canon so I always have plenty of people to borrow from :) Review ID: 10000000008739267 Was this review helpful? Housed in a tough magnesium body. the 10D was the successor to the d60 and the early D30.I think ive used most of the canon range of the EOS digital models now.2 years ago i bought a 10D, i got brilliant pictures from the camera even tho the viewfinder had a blurry fault. I just got used to it and it became my soulmate for 2 years.Since then ive come across about 6 other 10D models without any problems at all. 6mp sensor is well capeable of producing superb photos upto A4 print size and beyond.i had a 20D after the 10D, the 10D feels much better in the hand in my opinion.in operation i cant fault the 10D, autofocus is fast, exposure is spot on ( you can always tweak in photoshop if you need to). Noise levels are managed very well. i could shoot at iso 800 without any severe traces of noise. The latest 10D i have bought was for my 13 year old son whom ive been training for the last 2 years. its a major upgrade for him coupled with a 28-300mm, 18-50mm and 380EX flash. its all he's ever going to need.My opinion is, dont waste your money on the latest technology because you dont need it. A 10D is way suffiecient. Spend your money on decent lenses instead.Hope this helps some of you out there Tom@ Ruby_Photographic If you need any advice on purchasing a canon camera and a suitable lens, feel free to e-mail me at ruby_photographic@yahoo.co.uk Review ID: 10000000008488440 Was this review helpful? Having been into Photography since my mid teens I've recently found myself using my images mainly online, resorting to using a cheap 0.4Mpixel camera (all I could afford at the time) rather than my 35mm film camera (Canon Eos 100 SLR), so the time was right to finally upgrade to a decent Digital camera, and the Canon EOS10D seemed to offer all that I needed at a reasonable cost (being a discontinued model the prices have now reached a level that I was able to afford on my budget!) I chose to remain with the Canon brand specifically as my current lenses (EF fit) are compatable with most of the current EOS cameras (watch out for the differences with EF and EF-S fit, they wont fit all models), the quality and reliability of their cameras has always been good and I'd also heard that if you've used an EOS before, then the controls on the newer models will feel both natural and easy to use. I have to say how amazed I've been with both the ease of use and the picture quality of the EOS10D! The controls do feel easy to use, if you've ever used an EOS SLR before, then the transition feels very easy, the controls are instinctive and in the same places as on the older film EOS's, which means you dont need to spend ages concentrating on learning the controls, but rather can focus your attention onto the picture itself, where it should be! On a technical front, the 10D offers masses more enhanced features than my old EOS100, the AF now has many more focussing points (7 in total), the exposure metering offers 3 modes (which should be suitable for most applications), plus there are 12 shooting modes, divided into 3 zones, which should enable anyone from the most experienced to the newest photographer to acchieve good results! Quality wise, the 10D although now discontinued (originally released in 2004/2005) is a part of Canon's 'prosumer' range, (meaning that its aimed at both entry level proffessional and advanced amateur use), and features a magnesium alloy body, which makes it tough, if a little on the heavy side! All the function buttons and fittings seem well made, and the LCD screens are both good quality and easy to view. Picture quality is up to 6.3 megapixels, not amazing by modern standards, but more than sufficient for web use and for printing up to A3 size, the DIGIC processor does a great job of processing the image without any noise that I've been able to discern, even up to 400% magnification! I was concerned before I used the camera that the focal length magnification (1.6x caused by the size of the CMOS sensor which is smaller than the size of a 35mm film plane) would make it less easy to compose the shots I wanted, but I'm happy to say that this hasnt yet been a problem, although I do now feel that I'd like to invest in an ultra wide zoon lens for wider landscape shots! The digital imaging controls on the 10D are something that I am new to, the white balance isnt something you can normally control on a 35mm film camera, but I have to say that they are exceptionally easy to use, rather like chosing the type of film that you use on a film camera, plus the choices of ISO speed are good, the lower the ISO the better the quality, as with a film camera! Overall I am very happy with this camera, it offers all the features and quality I need at a reasonable cost, yes I'd love to have an EOS5D (with its full frame sensor), but not for 10 times the price! Despite being around 5 years old and lacking a few of the features ( well, more like fancy image trickery ) of the most modern cameras, the 10D is still able to take stunning shots with a very crisp and detailed 6MP sensor. Very solid in the hand, very quiet in operation. In fact, the only real downside to the 10D is the start-up time, which may be just a couple of seconds, but it's enough to miss the odd shot if it's allowed to go into standby. Get some Canon L glass on this body and you'll struggle to see, in quality terms, where that extra £500 is going on the 40D ( spend that extra on decent glass instead ). I was amazed at the price of the 10D. Only three or four years ago you'd pay over £1,000 for this camera. I particularly like the cameras build quality, such rugged strength attracted me as it would have stood up well to use to date and would give me years of trouble free use. (I hope) This camera has all the features that my old film camera had plus all the advantages of a digital camera such as disposal of snaps that did'nt turn out. One draw back of the 10D is the cost of good quality lens as they are all still current and command high prices, still thats hardly the fault of the camera! At least everything that you could possibly need is readily available for this very popular range of cameras. Another plus for the 10D is the operating system. Although it is five years old (in its early form) the controls are vertually identical with the current range of top quality Canon offerings such as the 1D, 20D, 40D etc., so in the future if one decides to upgrade the controls are the same. I'm still a novice and I am still discovering the many many features that are built into this very sophisticated piece of machinery. If everything I bought was as much fun to use as this camera I'd be very happy. Review ID: 10000000005030391 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 17/12/07 by: 3 of 4 people found this review helpful. I have had my Canon 10D for two and half years and have just updated to Canon 40d. This was a hard decision to make. Since owning the 10D I would be in agreement with most of the other reviews of the camera - but there are some limitations which I was considering when moving to the 40D - I had also been looking towards the Canon 5D. Hope recording these gives some idea of the 10D limitations compared to some of the newer SLRs. Main reasons for changing the 10D: .1. A rather small and dim viewfinder and LCD screen - compared to the Canon EOS3 film SLR and Olympus C2500 (2.5 MPixel) Digital camera that I also own. One reason for having considered the 5D. .2. As is common with some other digital cameras, it is often difficult to obtain good highlights and shadows in pictures. Adjusting the RAW pictures in such circumstances often creates 'posterisation' in the shadows. The 40D is 14 bits digitisation instead of 12 bits for 10D. .3. The 10D is slow to start up - this is often a nuisance - resulting in loosing a picture. .4. Although the 'controls' are reasonably organised - it takes a little thought to 'set the camera up' when using the creative modes. Probably no more so than many other cameras. .5. The camera does have a tendency to underexpose but also does tend to let highlights also 'burn-out'. .6. The camera DOES NOT take the newer EF-S lenses for the reduce frame size SLRs - like 20D, 30D, 350D, 400D etc. In general this does mean buying the more expensive EF or equivalent lenses. Not a problem for me as I need them for my EOS film camera. One reason for considering the EOS 5D full frame SLR. .7. The reduced sensor size of the 10D does make the choice of lens/es more troublesome. CONCLUSION I have been reasonably happy with my 10D and it is a good, solid camera. At the current Ebay prices it is probably a bargain. Compared to the 10D, the 40D is a 'more open/ viewable camera' when taking the shots (3 ins LCD) also it starts up and shoots multiple frames more quickly. Taken together these do make a difference. Actual RAW pics do seem to have a slightly 'better quality' than the 10D - but not easy to detect unless more 'extreme' pics are being taken. Review ID: 10000000004873078 Was this review helpful?
