I bought it as a xmas present for my husband, as he has worn out the video. i hope he will like it, it will have extra scenes etc that the video has not got. It is still sealed so I cannot tell you any more than that
classic. definatly lives upto all its awards it recieved. i re-bought the dvd due to my old 1 being pinched so had to re-buy it would be stupid not to. being in similar line of work i can understand in detail how ryan is feeling living back all the memories of the good times and the bad its just a heart felt film
Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) must lead a small troop of men into the Normandy countryside to find a soldier, whose three brothers have all been killed in action. We see the Normandy beach landings (awe-inspiring and stomach-churning) through to the climactic battle in a small French town. The set pieces are amazing, the cinematography stunning - but the emotional impact hits you like a hammer-blow.
Quite simply one of the greatest films of all time - whether you like War films or not. Having just watched this film again, i am reminded just how good an actor Hanks can be, while there are faultless performances from all around him (Paul Giammati, Leland Orser, Vin Diesel, Giovanni Ribisi, Tom Sizemore et all). If you have never seen this film - purchasing this is an absolute no-brainer - you simply must own it!
Yet another reaon why Spielberg is the greatest cinematic story-teller of our time - maybe all time!
Beautifully - and often innovatively - filmed, and acted to perfection by a perfect ensemble cast, Saving Private Ryan is one of Steven Spielberg’s finest moments, and a film that everyone with a love of film should see, regardless of whether or not you’re interested in World War 2 or war movies in general.
I think the fact that this film as won 5 Academy Awards speaks for itself
Tom Hanks for me is the best actor that there is in the acting world, and he plays his role in this film to perfection. Along side the likes of Vin Desiel and Matt Damon (Amongst others) This film as been made what it is because of the pure drama and front line action
A 5* film without a shadow of a doubt, although its a long length, every minute is as good as the last.
This is an excellent film, i love it as you have to concentrate to enjoy the full protential of the film, i bought it as i watched it a few years back and wanted to watch it again. You do not need to be a fan of these kind of films to enjoy it
this is a fantastic film, well wort seeing and i would tell everyone, even if they are not keen on war films to at least give this one a ty, its not a conventional war film my a long chalk
This is truly the best of Spielberg in my opinion. I did buy this movie in VHS, but to bring out the fullness in detail, especially in widescreen, is really beautiful. Many thanks to all at Ebay and to the sellers, who at the moment I find are excellent. Thank you once again, RT Bridger.
A tip before watching this DVD. Turn the volume up on the surround sound and get ready for some astounding action. The Normandy landing at the beginning of this film shows what war can really be like. The horror and fury are captured perfectly, time even slowing as some combatants actually report in battles, sight, sound and actions all becoming distorted and changed. One of the greatest pieces of war film making ever made. The whole film continues this sensual and emotional roller coaster to the films explosive climax. Excellent moral and thought provoking scenes set in the present day round off this classic film to its full potential.
Plot based on the story of Frederic Niland, who was pulled out of frontline duty after his mother had received three MIA telegrams on the same day regarding his brothers, this is based on that mission - to find and rescue Private Ryan in the midst of the French landings.
Verdict Uncompromising, powerful war movie that does not pull any punches. Pefectly balances the inhumanity of war and the humanity of its protagonists. Devastating and essential viewing.
i bought this film for my son,he needed to see it for school. so it helped him write about it. it was alot cheaper off ebay too. so i was very pleased with the dvd. will buy again. thanks
superb film! no wonder it won awards! i have seen this many, many times but have never owned a copy myself. i am not exactly in to war films but this appealed on many levels, even my kids loved it. ENJOY!!!
starring the great tom hanks, Seen through the eyes of a squad of American soldiers, the story begins with World war lls`s historic d day landins Why are eight men risking their lives to save just one? Surrounded by the brutal realities of war, each man searches for his own answer - and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honour, decency and courage.d War II's historic D-Day invasion,
I watched half of this film on tv and missed the last half. Thought how can i watch the film again cheaply. E-Bay was the answer (yet again). A lovely dvd and cheap to buy from an excellent seller.Cheers Mick.
I first bought this film on video some years ago but decided to upgrade to DVD as this makes my collection far more compact and manageable. I have seldom had a bad experience on ebay. I can find almost anything I need or want without leaving home, always at better prices than the shops and frequently items I can't find in the shops where everything is increasingly the same.
So, a new perfect quality DVD, cheaply and easily obtained and delivered very quickly to my door. What could be better?
This is a superb film that tries to bring home the brutality of war. Along with that it depicts a storey of a family who have three sons caught up in war torn Europe during the second world war. Two of the sons are killed & Tom Hanks is tasked to find & save the third.
As U.S. troops storm the beaches of Normandy, three brothers lie dead on the battlefield, with a fourth trapped behind enemy lines. Ranger captain Tom Hanks and seven men are tasked with penetrating German-held territory and bringing the boy home. Steven Spielberg and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski paint a harrowing picture of the price of war and heroism -- one that netted them Oscars for Best Director and Best Cinematography, respectively
The dvd I ordered was delivered to me extremely quickly and when I received it it was in excellent condition. I am very happy with this purchase and would definitely deal with that person again.
It's a great film and will always be a classic. I've never owned my own copy and E-Bay provides the perfect medium for sellers to share films they no longer want to watch with those of us who do.
Following the disappointments of THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK (1997) and AIMSTAD (1997), many people begun to wonder if Steven Spielberg had started to lose his touch, especially after winning a Best Director Oscar for the powerful SCHINDLER'S LIST (1993). However, he proves them that he hasn't lost his touch when SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998) came out in Summer 1998. One of the main things that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN will be remembered for is the horrifiying 25-minute opening scene of the D-Day Landings. It feels more like a documentary filmed on the battleground rather than being a movie.
Featuring superb cinematography and fine performances (notably from Tom Hanks), SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is another powerful and moving World War II movie from Spielberg.
I have always loved war films and only ever critised them for not having a good story line, but this film has some of the best scenes, like the one at the end when they are defending the bridge, or the D-Day landings, very gory and very realistic. This is another piece of fine work from director Steven Spielberg. The film follows the exploits of a small platoon of men fighing thier way through from the D-Dya landings and occupied france to find a soldier parachuted behind enemy lines who has lost 4 of his brothers, the passion and emotion brought out in this film made even me even feel like crying each time on of the squad got killed, and yet show a spark of hope when they step onto the battlefield each time. Tom Hanks shows in this movie why he is possibly one of the best actors of all time.
This is a film that I already have on video but wanted to have on DVD. I can only watch it on one player as it is a region 1 film on saying that it is a compelling film to watch, so the big television does it justice.
This is a film that although can be quite harrowing is compulsive viewing.
Stephen Speiberg has directed this film magnificantly, the use of black and white footage of the actual D day landings makes this film more realistic, you could almost believe that you were there.
one for the boys...solid film, even for children under 12. I think that it gave them a good idea of how terrible war are and how important friendship is.
