This film has everything. Action, Drama, Romance, and Humour. Not to mention Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer ! (Oh, and there's a couple of pretty girls to keep him happy) There aren't many films I will watch more than once, but this is one of them. Highly Recommended.
The film Top Gun was possibly one of the best combat flying films produced - it featured Tom Cruise in his roll as a rather devil-may-care swash buckling naval aviator training during the Korean War period.
The musical score was superb and complimented the extreme sound track of the film.
It was purchased as one of two DVDs to demonstrate the full cinema surround sound set ups which I and another member of my family had been given as Christmas presents.
Everyone who watched it enjoyed it for one reason or another - the super sound of the jets taking off and landing on the aircraft carriers - the combat scenes and the training flights at the Top Gun Flying Academy.
The background music and the love story woven into the film also appealed to all who watched it.
The most used comment of recommendation given was - I enjoyed seeing that film again and the surround sound was exceptional.
it's actually a very good film...the thing is, even if you hate Tom Cruise, you can't deny what a brilliant actor he is. The character of Goose was absolutely essential in this film which is pretty brilliant..
YOU KNOW THE DRILL, GUY FLIES PLANES, GUY WANTS GIRL, GUY GETS GIRL, HAPILY EVER AFTER, GREAT DOGFIGHT SCENES AND SOME EDGE OF THE SEAT PARTS, BUT THIS DVD WILL ONLY COME OUT OF THE CABINET ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR.
Top Gun is, simply one of Tom Cruise's best films. This is a great movie and a 1980's classic not to be missed.
Plot Summary Maverick is a hot pilot. When he encounters a pair of MiGs over the Persian Gulf, his wingman is clearly outflown and freaks. On almost no fuel, Maverick is able to talk him back down to the Carrier. When his wingman turns in his wings, Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story of his father's death in combat that killed others due to his father's error. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in a different way to Charlie, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted.
The video quality improves over the old transfer in every way, the audio quality is excellent and the extras are top class - a well earned 5 stars. Danger Zone: The Making Of Top Gun is one of the best making-of documentaries I have seen.
Top Gun is the ultimate 80s film!! its perfect for both sexes as the boys love watching the MIGS and the F14 planes in action, the girls love to see the boys in action! ( Girls-look out for volley ball scene) A great cast including Val kilmer- 'Ice man', Kelly McGillis, 'charlie' and Mr Tom cruise himself!..who plays the arrogant fighter pilot 'Maverick' who struggles to be ' the best of the best' against his arch nemesis 'ice man' Top gun is packed with plenty of action, comedy and its also one of the greatest love stories of all time which features the song 'Take my breath away'-(Berlin) look out for the scene where Maverick and Goose sing, 'you've lost that loving feeling' to kelly mcgillis which is very entertaining to watch! Top gun is fun and such a fabulous film to add to your collection, i'd be surprised if it didnt have you saying,
"son your ego is writing cheques your body cant cash", " Take me to bed and loose me forever" " I feel the need for speed" and "Talk to me Goose".
by the end of it and singing along to the songs. Its not just a fun film, but its also deep and meaningful, very moving as we see Maverick struggle to graduate his top gun class after a tragic accident. i wont say much more, i dont want to spoil the film but i can tell you it has a happy ending! :)
Good associated memories and classic film that will never get old! My friend bought me the soundtrack a while ago which made me think about the film again and therefore search for it and buy it on ebay. I recommend the film to everyone!!
On march 23, 1969 the United States Navy established an elite school for the top one percent of its pilots, its purpose was to teach the lost art of Aerial Combat and insure that a handful of men who graduated were the best fighter pilots in the world.
They succeed.
Today the Navy calls it the Fighter Weapons School
The flyers call it:
TOP GUN Tom Cruise's performance is stellar, playing a role that he would end up playing again and again as the overconfident 'Maverick' who eventually learns his lesson. And a ham-handed lesson it is, hammered home in the end by his constant "I'm not leaving my wingman!" yell.
Val Kilmer shines...heck, the whole supporting cast shines! Meg Ryan, Anthony Edwards, Rim Robbins, Micheal Ironsides, Skerrit--they all come through beautifully. The action scenes are some of the best aerial shots ever shot.
alot of people insist this movie is gay but its only ever straight men who say it.i dont think its gay at all. they play volleyball out in the sun with their shirts off and slap each other on the back alot. ohh sooo gay. lots of men play sports and slap each other on the asses but aint called gay.
Tom Cruise stars as fighter pilot "Maverick" with his wingman "Goose" played by Anthony Edwards. Due to unexpected emotional turmoil, Maverick finds himself filling the shoes of one of the best and most renowned fighter pilots in the USA "Cougar" at the country's most prestigious fighter weapons academy "Top Gun".
There he displays ingenious ability to fly fighter jets, although due his unorthodox style and will to take risks is not appreciated by everyone, including Top Gun trophy arch-rival "Iceman" played by Val Kilmer and academy astro-physicist "Charlie" played by Kelly McGillis.
Maverick, who later falls in love with Charlie, encounters tragedy when it suddenly strikes during a routine war scenario where Maverick's plane malfunctions and falls into an uncontrollable flat spin. This results in Goose's death caused by hitting the canopy as he furiously trys to eject himself from the falling aircraft. Mavericks guilt takes a hold of him and consequently finds it difficult to sustain his blossoming relationship with Charlie and his growth and concentration as a fighter pilot.
At the last moment, in a last-ditch effort, Maverick is called into action in a real war encounter with Russian Mig fighter pilots. There he displays his innate flare, determination and thrilling flying manoeuvres to defeat the enemy almost single-handedly and become the solitary war hero. For his efforts, he is rewarded with the offer of being a Top Gun instructor. Finally he is reunited with Charlie as they realise that they cannot live their lives without one another.
The movie takes you on a rollercoaster journey giving feelings of happiness, sadness, romance, achievement and satisfaction as Pete Mitchell finally lays the ghosts of his father Duke Mitchell's death to bed.
The movie also includes the great and unmistakable soundtracks "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "Danger Zone" and "Take My Breath Away" to boot.
