This is a movie about a killer who terrorised San Francisco with random murders during the 1960s and 1970s and everyone was looking for him for almost two decades. This is taken from real events.
The movie is a masterpiece and even if it is 158 minutes you will enjoy every minute of it.
Surely a must buy movie because you are going to see it many times without getting bored.
Great casting, great plot and very good acting from Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr.

Fascinating, but over-long, examination of the deranged, cunning serial killer who called himself Zodiac and claimed to have killed more than 30 people. The detailed story of the frantic manhunt for Zodiac almost has a documentary feel. The killings dramatised in the film may be too graphic for some tastes. Capable cast is led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr.

This DVD is very dated. It is supposed to portray London in the sixties/seventies but it is so far fetched it is laughable.
The villian is so nieve he would have been politely dealt with early
in the story. The female parts were played with more conviction than the main characters and at least put some credence to the film.
The ending is hilarious, with more guns and bloodshed than The Gun Fight at
the OK Corral. The very last scene with the villian walking away with shot guns over his shoulder is priceless.

I think I must be missing something here reviews are really rating it, but somehow I've missed the point???

yep, it was based on a true set of events about the hunt for a serial killer around the 1970's and the 1960's........it was interesting but the story took forever to tell......and its not like this particular serial killer was more interesting or cleverer than others that we all know about. In fact it was the system that prolonged the investigation, not his calculated efforts or superior IQ.

In fact i got bored!!..........would rather have Hannibal back anyday!!

zodiac is a good serial killer.. thriller
Review created: 29/05/09

Watching Zodiac with Se7en and Fight Club in mind might disappoint those expecting a typical David Fincher movie, but his exploration of a serial killer’s reign across 70s San Francisco is highly rewarding, provided you’re willing to put in the (2 and a half) hours. The Zodiac killer submitted citizens of California to everything from fear to mild bemusement for the better part of a decade with his media-baiting ciphers and acts of terrible violence. Meanwhile reporters, police and an obsessed cartoonist named Robert Graysmith spent those years trying and ultimately failing to put a face to the name. Fincher’s own fascination with the case really comes across here, and while he doesn’t shrink from the horror of the murders, this is his most traditional, but most accomplished feat of storytelling to date.

The pin sharp dialogue and perfectly paced story is accompanied by a first rate cast – most notably Robert Downey Jnr’s hack Paul Avery and Mark Ruffalo’s dogged homicide detective David Toschi. The story veers away swiftly from standard serial killer fare to intense procedural, focussing on the obsession of the men trying to stop Zodiac. And the real accomplishment here is that audiences will feel their regret, because to this day, the killer has never been caught. Despite this and the intimidating running time, those with the patience will be rewarded with one of the best crime thrillers in years.

  a great movie.

it really annoys me that people can slate a movie like this cause it is ...TOO LONG. may i suggest they stick to mass produced formula movies that do not require you to engage your brain for too long in case your head starts to hurt.

The reason the film is long is that we have a story here spanning many years and with a lot of twists and turns , not to mention a large cast of charcters . surely the bigger crime would be to skip and cut elements of the story out , to satisfy the the fast food / fast film types of this world.

having read both of the books a few years ago , i was not expecting too many surprises in the plot , but it was great how the director managed to create a great thriller without deviating from the facts of the case. all the cast are excellent , as well is cinematography , which has always been a feature of Finchers films.

This film is a good thriller but is also thought provoking as it is about a serial killer who was never caught.
The acting is excellent and you can feel the frustration and desperation the main characters are feeling.
I would recommend this film to anyone to watch, but you need to be able to concentrate on what is happening as you can lose the plot easily, as I did the first time I watched it.
I have now seen it 3 times and am still finding parts of scenes that I have not seen before.
It is not a film for everyones taste; you need to enjoy thrillers and it is not an action film, but for those who like this type of film, it is worth watching.
Watch and enjoy.

DVD had been used (as listed) but came in very good condition and had no scratches on the disk etc. Was also very pleased with delivery, arrived very quickly and was sent in a "jiffy" envelope.

The film itself is ok, but a bit long. I like the fact that it's based on a true story.

  Interesting film
Review created: 13/06/08

I expected so much more from this film bearing in mind it was from the makers of Seven. It was more of a documentary than a film with no real cressendo. It would build up the pace and tension slowly keeping you fairly gripped but then it would flatline by not stayng on track. Watchable but disappointing overall.

This is a great film and another wonderful performance from Jake, however the film is in 2 halfs! and seems to take a little too long to get to the end. It is worth a watch though! very nice camera work and really puts you back in the 70's.

  I am the Zodiac Speaking.
Review created: 26/05/08

Hearing about it for months but never getting round to watching it, I enventually ebayed this item. From start to finish, you are held in suspense, gripping your seats for the next revelation. The story is directed perfectly, with every detail as accurate as possible. If you've never heard about the Zodiac Killer, like me, the film makes you want to find out more.

Since the first scene, you are captured into the 70s America, reliving the events that occured, sensing the tension felt. The thoughts of the characters could be read without them speaking, this done by the great cast of Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo.

Although this should be more mystery than thriller as the actual amount of excitement and hearthrobbingly tense moments are few, if any, but nevertheless you will get the suspense, whilst trying to work out who Zodiac really is.

After reading about it, the film is a great adaptation of the real life events, and if only I lived there in the 70s, I would surely have a deeper sense of emotion towards it. Overall, its a great watch; the only thing left is to read the book by Robert Graysmith.

Review created: 30/01/08

David Fincher, the director of Se7en and Panic Room brings us this outstanding thriller based on one of the most shocking serial killer cases in American History. Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards star as four men from the press and the police who grow increasingly obsessed with catching the Zodiac killer – a modern day ‘Jack the Ripper’. If you watch one crime thriller this year – you’d best make it this film.

Back in the late sixties and early seventies, California was rocked by a series of murders committed by the self proclaimed ‘Zodiac’ killer. Zodiac picked off both couples and people alone at random, terrified the community and mocked the police and authorities. Writing to the newspapers, the Zodiac was frontpage news and the cops investigating the case were under a great deal of pressure to catch the killer.

At the heart of the Zodiac case is a code that the Zodiac insists be printed on the front page of every newspaper. Cracking the code becomes an obsession for all involved especially as Zodiac threatens the lives of the city’s school children – sparking a police escort for school buses.

Director David Fincher takes us back to those days and into the lives of four men – two journalists, two detectives. Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards star as Detectives Dave Toschi and Bill Reynolds, charged with hunting down the Zodiac killer. The case is unlike any other they had come across with the killer leaving no discernable trail or pattern. In addition to following up leads, the two men also have to contend with getting evidence from multiple jurisdictions and police departments, each keen to crack the case by themselves.

While the police investigate Zodiac’s crimes, newspaper reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr) and political cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) strike up an unlikely friendship and begin to investigate the case on their own. Working on tips and speculation as well as gut instinct, the two men become focused on uncovering the identity of the city’s stalker and in turn Zodiac becomes increasingly focused on them.

As the lives of all involved begin to fall apart under the pressure of the case, ultimately it is left to one man who gives up everything in order to feed his obsession with Zodiac and solve one of the greatest mystery’s in American criminal history.

A well written, superbly executed crime thriller; watching Zodiac is like taking a trip in a time machine. No expense has been spared by director David Fincher in this lavish recreation of the world of the seventies – from costumes, to the sets, the language used and, of course the haircuts, it feels like we’re there; his attention to detail is incredible. Based on eye witness accounts by the victims, police officers and men involved; Zodiac tells of a case like no other. An absolutely brilliant movie on a par with Se7en, add to your list now.
