Album Notes
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank "Rube" Beard (drums).ZZ Top was formed by guitarist Billy Gibbons, who had won praise from no less than Jimi Hendrix for his guitar work with the Houston band, Moving Sidewalks. After the break-up of Moving Sidewalks, he recruited fellow Texans Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. Inspired by Muddy Waters, the Rolling Stones and Texas blues legend John Lee Hooker, they played a solid brand of blues-rock that won them a devoted local following. While not their best-selling or most renowned album, ZZ Top's 1970 debut, ZZ TOP'S FIRST ALBUM, showed that the Texas trio had already nearly perfected their signature down n' dirty, blues-boogie-rock style. Like ZZ Top's other classic '70s albums, this one's an ass-kicker from beginning to end, especially on such standouts as the album-opening twang of "Shaking Your Tree," the vicious "Brown Sugar," the big rock of "Goin' Down to Mexico," and the fat blues groover "Bedroom Thang." Also of note is guitarist Billy Gibbons' supreme guitar tone and tasty playing; few other rock guitarists have sounded as confident on their debut as Gibbons does on ZZ TOP'S FIRST ALBUM.

  Brown Sugar Blues

I seem to going through a retro period at the moment, to give you an idea of my age I grew up listening to The Who, Beatles and The Small Faces, later Steely Dan and the West Coast sound took over. ZZ top, apart fom the well known hits passed me by. This album produced in the early days of the band reveals their Blues influence particually in Brown Sugar but you can hear the rock side coming through via the excellent rifts from Billy Gibbons on lead guitar. Recommended.

  Fantastic blues album

I bought it because I had the vinyl version and no turntable.
This album is a classic blues album which features ZZ top before they translated into the mainstream/pop market. Energy in bundles, tight as a drum an authentic rockin' blues band.
They remind me a bit of Dr Feelgood who I saw recently and they blew me away! Proper music!

This is the first album from the Texan trio, and it is a classic blues-rock album. It's not in the same vein as their 80s albums that most will be familiar with (Eliminator, for example - which is a great album in its own right) but it really does rank up high in their output in my opinion. It's on a par with Deguello, which is my favourite album of theirs.

It's not as polished as later albums, which gives it a gritty, raw feel. Billy Gibbons' guitar sound on this record is bluesy, rocking, subtle in places, downright unsubtle in others...my favourite track on the album is Brown Sugar, whihc starts with just vocals and guitar licks from Billy Gibbons until the rest of the band kicks in...and it hits you right in the gut.

The rest of the album has some really good tracks too, such as Neighbor, Neighbor, Goin' Down To Mexico, Certified Blues and...well, actually, they're all good, I can't really fault any of them.

For fans of the band who are only familiar with their 80s output, you really should go back to their roots and give this record a spin, then go onto Rio Grande Mud, Deguello, and the rest of their 70s albums. You won't be disppointed if raw blues-rock is what you like. Billy Gibbons is one of the best blues guitarists around, anyone who knows a thing or two about appreciating guitar tone will love the sounds he gets on this album.

A cracker!
