XXX (DVD 2003)

If you can get over how bad an actor Vin Diesel is then you will appreciate this as a good action film.

It is watchable but I honestly canot get over how bad an actor he is and its a sad state of affairs that there are no real quality action heroes around (maybe Matt Damon being the only one)

Bought it to replace one that I had borrowed and broken!

It was a great film which was both funny and exciting/action packed!
It has a fantastic, easy to follow story and features Vin Diesel!! What more could you want!!
I would highly recommend this film!

If you thought Bond movies were daft, you'll gape in astonishment at this second teaming of Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen (star and director, respectively, of The Fast And The Furious). xXx takes the 007 formula and blends in muscles, tattoos and an array of "action sports" set pieces.

Vin Diesel is Triple-Ex. You can almost hear the growling trailer voice-over just thinking about it. Actually, he's simply Xander Cage, extreme sports fanatic and anti-establishment prankster. We're introduced to Xander as he steals the sports car of a rightwing senator. Driving it off a bridge at high speed, he both makes a point about the senator's reactionary legislation and gets his adrenaline kicks. Woo-hoo! But as soon as he's back hanging out with his adoring Pepsi Max buddies, the government kidnaps him and soon scar-faced National Security Agency agent Augustus Gibbons (Jackson) is coercing Xander into working for the US government. The agency needs extreme sports fanatics to infiltrate a rogue Russian terrorist organisation in Prague, you see. Of course. Absolutely.

After a series of tests (riding a motorbike around a Colombian drug-farm for example, jumping a massive fence in a fun homage to The Great Escape, that kind of thing), Xander - dubbed Triple-Ex now, after a tattoo on his neck - heads for Prague and gets involved with the villain of the piece, Yorgi (Csokas) and his moll, Yelena (Asia Argento, daughter of Dario).

Despite the extreme sports and 80s-style action movie trappings (the film is replete with enormous explosions), xXx pretty much follows the formula of the Bond films.

Cohen's film is superficially trying to up the ante of the Bond films and supercede them - it begins by having a Bond-esque, tuxedo-clad agent bumped off. However, considering the Bond films are self-parodies that attempt to outdo the earlier films in the franchise with each instalment, the action isn't that dissimilar. Car chases. Snowy chases (X skydives, snowboards down a mountain, sets off an avalanche and outruns some skiddoos in one scene). Explosions. The other elements of xXx all follow Bond: the megalomaniac with a ludicrous plans for world domination (involving a solar-powered sub that looks like a radio-controlled Thunderbird); the ostensible villainess who falls for the hero; the eastern European stereotypes. There's even an M in the form of Gibbons, and a Q in the form of the geeky Agent Shavers (Roof).

Verdict
Bond, with a dose of 80s action hero muscularity, a skate-punk wardrobe, crude product placement and a nu-metal soundtrack - ie tailored for 14-year-old boys. Be warned, there's nothing here for an adult brain to engage with. Fun but deeply, ridiculously silly.

I loved this film when i first watching it, but now i have seen the 2nd i believe that the next level is a lot better, but there is nothing to suggest that this film is class

I'm a huger fan of vin diesel, and he is very good in this film. He as done better, don't get me wrong, but he does adapt to the role that he is given here very well and he makes the movie what it is.

Well worth a watch thats for sure, and the special features are very good too.

this is definately not just a mans film. i watched this and loved it, vin deiel is gorgeous and such a good actor he just throws himself into the role he's playing,

This Dvd is Fantastic There nothing more to say really i Recommend that you buy it. And Bluray is even more fantastic.

The hype surrounding "xXx" trumpets Vin Diesel's tattooed, Herculean daredevil as "A new breed of secret agent" - screw that stuffy old Brit James Bond, here's a sparky new spy franchise for Generation Xbox.

So what is this radical, fresh, formula for action and espionage thrills? Well, a lone operative must infiltrate a criminal organisation, where he's caught by the OTT bad guy (who reveals his world-threatening plan); there's some enigmatic totty for our hero to charm; very little narrative logic; some wildly implausible stunts; and some mildly amusing pay-off lines.

And the makers call it "new"? Ian Fleming's estate should be after royalties.

Hell, Xander Cage (Diesel) has even inherited the Brosnan Bond's irritating habit of being puritanical about smoking (apparently it could kill you, kids).

Still, the 007 formula has endured for 40 years for a reason: it's fun.

Dumb fun, sure - and in the hands of "Airheads" writer Rich Wilkes, this is dumber than usual - but fun nonetheless.

So, if you're either a) a 13-year-old boy; or b) prepared to give your brain a rest, "xXx" is enjoyable popcorn entertainment.

Plus, as the extreme-sports rebel turned spy, Diesel is an eye-magnet.

The "Fast and the Furious" star has been touted as a new Arnie, but as he struts, brawls and bawls his way through Marton Csokas' gang of pesky anarchists, he's more reminiscent of Steve McQueen. Not the build, obviously, but the presence.

Like McQueen, Diesel's a limited actor but a great performer - he just exudes cool. It's his charisma - coupled with the raw sex appeal of Asia Argento's X girl - that makes Rob Cohen's movie tick.

Unusually, here the words don't matter (which is just as well) - it's all about the star. Without Diesel, no one would give a XXXX about "xXx".

This movie appears to be made up of some, admittedly excellent, set pieces and a rather predictable storyline somewhere in the background. Vin Diesel stars as an underground "hero" of dangerous sports and stunts who finds himself working for the US Government, because he "fits in" and does'nt look like a spy. Usual side bar of love interest, but like most things in this film you can see it coming about 30 minutes before it happens on the screen. I find myself recommending the film anyway, mainly because of the action pieces. If you do not "collect" films I would have to say "Rent and return"

XXX on DVD is one of those films where you just have to switch off the brain, put your feet up and enjoy an action packed couple of hours. It start Vin Diesal as an adrenalin junkie who's used by the American government to target a European gang of druglords. All in all, this is a good yarn, with some great stunts...but dont expect Shakespeare!

Mention the word "spy" and for most people it conjures up British accents, tuxedos and martinis – shaken, not stirred of course. While I've been a Bond fan for longer than I care to admit, let's be realistic for a moment; it's pretty hard to relate to a polished pseudo aristocrat who beds supermodels, battles supervillains and saves the world on a weekly basis. Where are all the regular Joe average superspies?

Xander Cage is an attitude riddled adrenalin junkie who is always looking for the next big fix. His fun comes to an abrupt stop when his latest stunt catches the attention of the wrong person in the NSA and Xander gets shanghaied. It seems that a certain anarchist group, composed of earthy ex-Red Army regulars is intent on ushering in a new era, and suave, sophisticated spies stick out like, well, suave sophisticated spies. The NSA feels that this is a task that Xander, a tattooed delinquent, deemed to be the `best and brightest of the bottom of the barrel' would be perfect for. Well, with a few exceptions.

With Schwarzenegger contemplating a run for Governor, and Willis finally being accepted as a `serious' actor, the Action Hero genre has been left bereft of a genuine successor. Enter Vin Diesel, a man of few words, who first popped up on Hollywood's radar when his indie film `Multi-facial', which he wrote, directed and starred in received great reviews at Caanes. Most importantly, Diesel caught the attention of Steven Spielberg, who cast him in `Saving Private Ryan' as Private Caparzo. His breakout role as Dominic Toretto in `The Fast and the Furious' (a film intended to showcase Paul Walker) proved his power as a box office draw and he was soon being hailed as the go to action hero for the next millennia (Revolution Studios is betting huge that he will be- they signed him to a three picture deal and will pay him $20 million for the first sequel).

As Xander, Diesel is surprisingly low key – he is pensive, humorous, growly and explosive when necessary - and there is no doubt that `XXX' is his vehicle. Diesel dominates every scene that he appears in with an understated cockiness, and those ever-bulging biceps. Asia Argento (daughter of horror meister Dario Argento) affects a Courtenay Love style persona – her Yelena is tough, b*tchy, no nonsense and cold as ice. Yelena, like Xander, is edgy, rough, and quick-witted. The supporting cast, with the exception of Samuel Jackson as Xander's slick and slimy protégé, are largely unremarkable.

The action sequences are for lack of a better word, extreme: from the opening base jump (okay, technically it's not a base jump in the strictest sense of the term) with a twist sequence, to the amazing freestyle motocross sequence to the boarding, the stunts are amazing. I also appreciated the fact that neither the spies or the gadgets have much polish – the Q equivalent in `XXX' is a total geek/frat boy wannabe whose gadgets lack subtlety, and are largely untested (XXX's retrofitted GTO requires a `Gadgets for Dummies' guide). There are several elements that hamstring the film however.

The actors are constantly hemmed in by lackluster dialogue – it doesn't matter how charismatic a character is, they are ultimately defined by their writing. There were no pithy catch phrases or witticisms – a necessity for any action hero. There are also too many lulls in the film – I appreciated the action sequences but repeatedly found myself getting bored with the filler in between. Also, the `secre

You don't have to think, just watch sexy Vin doing what he does best! Great car chases and eye candy for boys and girls. Best leave the brain behind and enjoy a good old action film.

I liked what they were trying to do with this movie but they didn't quite pull it off. Vin Diesel was far too wooden for the lead role here
