  Wrong Turn (DVD 2004)

A brisk, nasty, no-nonsense horror, Wrong Turn was written by Alan McEvoy and was yet another film inspired by the Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The film makes its intentions clear in the first five minutes: a couple are rock climbing when they are brutally murdered by unseen hands, then we go into a title sequence that depicts black and white photographs of inbred country folk and newspaper clippings of mysterious disappearances around the area. If you've seen the Tobe Hooper film you know what to expect, and Wrong Turn doesn't make any effort to erase that film from your mind. It's almost a tribute to it, only with more attractive scenery (although the computer generated scenery later on is a letdown).

The story is so predictable that you can successfully guess who will be killed and in which order. The two left with the damaged vehicles are typical slasher movie victims, not too bright but horny. The four who go off for help are a little different, though. I don't know whether it's the script or the way Harrington plays him, but Chris is cold and distant, the strong silent type who we find out little about: he's a doctor, but that's as far as his background goes. You'll see that everything in this movie is pared down to the bare essentials.

The others are Carly (Emmanuelle Chriqui), who is the girlfriend of Scott (Jeremy Sisto) an interesting, humorous character who's kind of the Shaggy of the group ("I need to remind you of a little movie named Deliverance"). Lastly, we have the intelligent Jessie (Eliza Dushku), who has recently been dumped by her boyfriend. There is a nod to making us care about these people, but the main reason they're there is to be terrorised by the mountain men who pick off unwary travellers for food and their transport.

The current, proposed victims find a grotty cabin where there's a nasty surprise for them: not only a lack of phones, but body parts in the fridge. A strong fright scene follows where the mountain men return unexpectedly with the bodies of the two who had been left behind, so Chris and the rest have to hide while one girl's body is butchered. The film isn't afraid to be vicious, and there is good suspense to follow, as in the watchtower bit. Economical it may be, but Wrong Turn delivers the thrills, and doesn't outstay its welcome. Don't turn off the film when the credits start. Music by Elia Cmiral.

Story:
Revisiting the teenage slasher movies of the 1970s and 1980s, WRONG TURN is a tense, suspense-packed horror film starring Eliza Dushku (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER). When Chris (Desmond Harrington) is late for a job interview, he drives speedily through a backwoods dirt road, and winds up in a head-on collision with a group of teenage campers. As the cars are write-offs, the group has no option but to trek through the woods and seek help. Stumbling upon a mysterious cabin, the unhappy campers soon realise they are in grave danger when they happen upon a mixture of grotesque oddities and body parts, soon followed by the return of the freakish inhabitants of the disgusting abode. The intensity builds as the inbred, kill-crazy cabin dwellers go after Chris and the campers, leading to some grisly scenes in the dense woodland, and a series of brutal, bloody set-pieces from director Rob Schmidt.
WRONG TURN takes similar backwoods horror flicks like TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES as its inspiration, providing visceral thrills aplenty, and the requisite amount of dumb teenage characters. Never lapsing into self-parody, the film should appeal to older horror movie fans keen to revisit the movies of their youth, and younger fans eager to witness some modern-day stalk-and-slash mayhem!

Comments:
Caution: Eliza Dushku ( known from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) Stars !!! So Be Prepared To DROOL :P

Awesome movie, great story, Eliza Dushku great as usuall in acting & being sexy.

Definately Recommendable. A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Usual dumb American kids get lost in the woods and picked off by locals. One of the better horror films out at the time.Similar to Texas chainsaw and Hills have eyes but less gorey.

I love watching a good horror movie and this movie certainly kept me glued.
It includes a few gruesome scenes (body parts found in fridge), and was inspired by the classic texas chainsaw massacre.
The movie is pretty predictable from the start, so if your looking for a twist; this isn't the movie for you.

EXCELLENT HORROR MOVIE ABOUT A BUNCH OF TWENTY SOMETHINGS BEING MURDEREDIN THE WOODS AS YOU EXPECT A FEW GOOD KILLINGS AND A BIT OF TENSION A SLIGHTLY STRANGE ENDING THAT MAKES IT A BIT DIFFERENT TO ALL THE OTHER MOVIES OF THE SAME GENRE.

Although there are plenty of these films being made, this really takes a new turn. You don't really see what's attacking people for ages but you know there has to be something really wrong with them. I love the fact that someone dies within 5 minutes of the film starting, I wasn't expecting it at all.

Having seen "Wrong turn 2" I decided to buy the 1st film. Sometimes a sequel is not as good as the original but i have to say that both films were really good. It had me hanging on the end of my seat in parts and i thought the special effects were very realistic. It is a horror film where you think you can predict the outcome only i didnt and was surprised. I enjoyed the film very much

  scarey film
Review created: 24/04/08

this film shocked me when I first saw it, I came upon it one eve while flicking channels looking for something to watch, the film caught my attention and I started watching it, I was hooked, although I watched it through my fingers,(I know I,m such a girly girl)the whole film has a kinda strange feel to it, which makes you want to watch it just to see if its as horrific as you think. Top marks for effects and realism, became a firm favorite.

Great horror movie if you fancy a night in scaring yourself! I saw this movie about 2 years ago and it scared me something stupid. If you enjoy getting really worked up and the adrenaline going then this the movie for you. Some people might not like it as its about caniblism but if you take it for what it is its fine.

We found this film really scary from start to finish.
The acting is great and the storyline has loads of twist and turns.
The actors/actresses are not well known so you never know who will be killed off next !
