I brought this to educate my kids regarding World War 2. I watched this in 1973
and it has always remained in my mind.Balanced informative and respectful of all those involved.Make your own conclusions of the events.Without being dictated to by the format. As good now as I recollected. My kids found it not too boring and looking forward to watching events unfold.A must for all enquiring minds.

I decided to buy the boxed set because I had seen snippets of the series on television. I am currently doing voluntary work at the Imperial War Museum and it seemed like a good idea to understand more about the Second World War.
I wasn't born until 1946 so I only had my family's first hand accounts.

I knew that it was an award winning sreies so I bought it in the expectation of a first class narrative , which is exactly what it has. Additionally there are contemporary film narratives and this makes the whole DVD a very interesting and informative account of the War.

I like the DVD formmat because I can use the referencing system to find exactly the part of the episode I want to study.

All in all a very good set and worth looking for through Amazon - I had several choices of price and condition to choose from.

excellent overview of ww2, you can follow threads (like in the pacific; or in europe etc) and get a feel for how the global picture looked. There is lots of real-time footage, and interviews with people like Albert Speer among others.
If you're interested in a good broad picture of WW2, this is an excellent buy.

Bought this after watching it occasionally on the history channel. This is a masterpiece of television, a standard to set all war docs against. Olivier creates an unbiased narrative, while still stirring moods. The images you see are of the time, some disturbing, others unbelievable, yet all come together to give the most complete overview of the war to date. Due to the fact that most of the eyewitnesses in this documentary are dead, this will never be repeated, and as such is an absolute must for anyone intrigued as to what happened in those terrible years.

The best documentary, series bar none!

This documentary series had such a profound effect on me during it's initial run in the seventies. I still rate it as the best, on any subject, of all. To cap it that, the opening titles and score will go down in history as some of the most haunting ever.

Authentic material on DVD's . Its a pity it wasn't digitally remastered to get rid of the wear and tear on the films, it was originally shot on.

Olivier's narration is a bit like Harrison Ford's on blade runner, monotone and reading the script without emotion.

If you can get over these minor drawbacks its well worth adding to your library. A word of caution though, if you watch it on a computer with widescreen there will be alot of blank spaces shown as black to the sides and to the top and bottom as its been set up to only play in 4:3 or the old TV format...

Astonishing series, a benchmark in historic records. We are fortunate it was made when it was as it could never be done as well now. If you have not seen it you cannot fully understand modern world affairs especially in central and eastern Europe. And if you have not seen it, you have no chance of appreciating the horrors people suffered in order that we might enjoy our lives as we do today.

  A good investment

I will admit that I did not buy this box set for myself. It is actually a Christmas present for my partner who is hugely interested in WWII. He wanted to buy it in HMV once when we were shopping, and he could only get it on the high street for £100!

I only paid about £25- £30 for the boxset off e-bay and I am hugely impressed with the way that it is presented. The box set looks classy and it is not too bulky considering it contains over 90 Hours of footage...

I would suggest this box set to anyone who is interested in WWII, as my parter has been banging on about it for months. Definately worth investing in!

  The world at war
Review created: 01/09/09

I enjoyed this excellent series when it was shown in the 1970s. I purchased the entire series on 5 videos in the 1990s. I was delighted to be able to purchase the entire series with many extra features on dvd. The series covers the events leading to the outbreak of war in 1939. It is a thorough record of the progress of the war using many of those involved giving their experiences and views. It deals with the consequences of the war after it ended and should serve as a warning to the generations following those that lived through the war. Lawrence Olivier provides the commentary and proves that he was the only one who could have done justice to the series, although Eric Porter provides an excellent commentary to the later features. Recommended as possibly the best series ever produced to tell the story of this world wide conflict.
