The events that took place on September 11, 2001 changed the world forever. A painful memory, fresh in American history; there was an outcry when it was announced that controversial director Oliver Stone would be making a film about the events of that day. But Stone’s critics needn’t have worried – rather than going off on a political tangent (JFK anyone?), Stone has been uncharacteristically sensitive; simply concentrating on the human story of two police officers buried in the lobby of the World Trade Center on 9/11 and their families. The result is an excellent film that closely matches the accounts of the two officers involved.

World Trade Center tells the story of two members of the Port Authority Police Department who were the last people to be pulled alive from the rubble of the collapsed towers on September 11. Nicolas Cage stars as Sgt. John McLoughlin, a Police veteran who previously worked in the Center following the previous terrorist bombing in the 90s. Considered an expert, he leads a group of police volunteers into the burning buildings to rescue people on the floors above. Officer Willy Jimeno (Michael Peria), is a new member of the police department, keen to impress, who although having a pregnant wife at home ( Maggie Gyllenhaal), he volunteers to be on his sergeant’s team. Nobody could have predicted what happened next – as the team are suiting up with fire fighting equipment in the downstairs lobby, the entire South Tower collapses, bringing tons of concrete on top of the group. Most of the team are killed while McLoughlin and Jimeno are pinned under slaps of concrete twenty feet below ground level.

This all happens very early on in the film, and throughout much of the picture, they’re stuck under the rubble but still battling on for their lives. Still not fully aware of what has taken place, and unsure if anyone will find them before they are crushed to death, all they can do is fight to stay awake as they know that they’ll live longer if they do and daydream about the families that they’ve left behind at home. Traumatic to say the least but this is what actually happened.

Meanwhile above ground, things are almost equally as traumatic, as their families attempt to deal with the possibility that their loved ones are dead. McLoughlin’s wife Donna (Maria Bellow), the mother of his four children does her best to stay strong in front of her kids while Jimeno’s wife Alison (Maggie Gyllenhaal), pregnant with their second daughter, is more impatient than Donna but is completely lost – she doesn’t know what she can do to help. It isn’t long before they both head towards ground zero. We follow both families as they try to survive the day.

All in all, this is a terrific film with amazing special effects but more importantly a really compelling and interesting story. Oliver Stone has stuck very closely to the accounts of the two police officers, bringing them in as advisers and has also brought together the actual rescuers from that day to play extras on this film; this does much to add to the realism.

  Worth a Watch...

A sensative and compelling look at the devistating attacks on the USA on September 11th. A story of hope and survival and coming together to help and support each other.

Visual effect are realistic without overpowering the messgae. A fairly simple plot and pace but the unclutteredness, makes it very moving and a good watch.

I loved this film, i have done alot of research into the WTC 9/11 and was abit wary of what the film would be like, would it be accurate or not, would it extend the facts, but it didnt. it was a fantastic production, with just the right amount of everything, flashbacks, news footage, touching moments. there wasnt too many "Glossy" moments as such, it portraid the fear and general anticipation like no other film, not too many horrifying views but just enough to bring the reality of the situation into context.

10/10, will recommend to anyone to watch it.

This is the first time iv ever done any thing like this so you'll have to bear with me.
The film is not what i thought it would be, i thought it would be from the point of view of the terrirosts or passengers but instead it was the view of the coppers and thier families. This means there was not alot of action in the film where it had the possibility of being a high drama film.
But i did like it abit because it coverd a sensitive issue and coverd it in a delicate manor. The acting (especially from Nicolas Cage) was very good.
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts.

  World Trade Center Must see
Review created: 22/08/08

The Dvd starts early on the morning of 9/11. It follows the path of two Port Authority Policeman, who are called in to help crowd control and rescue those inside the twin towers.

Soon after they arrive in the concourse, the first tower collapses, and through luck and experience some of the Policemen survive. It shows the hours that pass between the trapped few, and how their thoughts travelled to their loved ones. It shows the rescuers, and how they came to be there.

The families point of view is also shown, the terrible wait for news.

The only place I would have improved (if any), was more time showing how the centre looked. From a Uk resident, we never saw it at its finest.

There is an extra, where the actually survivors discuss each scene. A must see.

As a person interested in survival psychology, it shows it very plainly, and as such a must see for me.

Your whole aspect to these events will change by watching this film, it is harrowing in parts, but is well worth watching.

World Trade Centre with Nicholas Cage
Review created: 03/05/08

We are always curious about these tragedies and can't stop watching, but the thing that makes this film different is that it is concentrating on the 2 guys lives and their bid for survival. The tragic circumstances as to why they were there takes a bit more of a back seat which is refreshing.

Nicholas Cage is fab in this, he can carry every emotion needed and this film was 'emotion-ful'. Worth watching.

Oliver Stone directed this flick. It's not in the genre of other Oliver Stone movies that have preceded it. This is quite a departure in fact.

Nick Cage plays the lead in what seems just another day in New York on September 11th 2001. This movie follows some of the men of the Port of New York Police Department during that fateful day.

It's a true story from a unique angle. All I can say is that having been to ground zero, this movie brings back memories.

It's a superb watch. Get the popcorn, beer and possibly a hanky. I won't ruin this film for you. Highly recommended if you are a Nick Copola (Cage) + Olly Stone fan.

  cagey character!
Review created: 19/02/08

The subject matter is 9/11 infamous day in our history , nicholas cage plays his part with typical cage determination i must say though that i preffered him in the wicker man. the story is a story of escape and courage and also of death its not a film that will raise a smile, the subject matter is all to real and all to close in time for us to forget . its based on the truth and thats what you get, you also get very much involved with the main characters and the feel of being there overcomes you, i viewed this firstly at the cinema then bought the dvd for a relative, i do hope they enjoy it!
on the whole its well worth watching and gets a 5/10 for its 9/11 tale of woe.

Compelling watching a great heart stopper
Review created: 25/01/08

I've seen alot of disaster movies, but i found the World Trade Centre to be more of a tense fight for life, at points your thrown in to death then next uplifted with survival. The powerful topic could have been a disaster for the film, but the film showed this moving topic in the compelling way. The fight of the individuals brought together the fight for life for all of New York at the difficult time. Not sure about the single loan army officer, i guess he found his path from his actions.
Great film

I found the way that the director had portrayed 9/11 was very good/ However, I was disappointed that the main story only focussed on two police officers.
Would have liked to have seen the story from other characters views and not just the police officers. But overall, I found the story very moving and had been written very well.

what can i say it was a very moving film played very well by all actors and actresses it would have had more impact if there had been more to the story as it was mainly about two police officers who survived what about all the others that were there the same day what happend to them there must have been more than those two officers that were rescued it would have been nice to have seen more people pulled out alive and a few more happy endings it was a good movie but could have told us more than it did so we could have understood more my heart goes out to all the families who lost loved ones on that fateful day and i hope that this film would have done them justice too
