The Wire - Series 1 - Complete (DVD 2005)

Introduced to the Wire by my boy but as usual missed the start and only joined for series 4. If you like things like the Sopranos - Prison Break - Dexter this is for you. Bit hard to understand some of the American English but quality series, a real gem.

This is an astounding show. Unlike most "cop" dramas this slow burns through the 13 episodes reaching it's bittersweet conclusions in such dramatic, well written ways that will stay with you long after the eject button has been pressed.
All the characters are believable archetypes and the cast are so good that I found myself thinking that if the only films and tv shows I see from now on only star these people, then actually life wouldn't be so bad.
I saw Idris Elba (Stringer) in a play a couple of years ago, which he was in during the summer filming hiatus of The Wire. I sort of knew the programme from word of mouth, if I felt then the way I do now, he got away with not meeting a gushing, geek man backstage after! Lucky escape.
Buy, buy, buy...Then go to the second season and keep going til you get to number 5!!!

Possibly the best US cop show made, with a Brit in the lead role !!
Shows the problems of life in the projects in Baltimore, the politics & money involved.
Is pretty gritty & the language is quite strong at times.
Don't watch this if you like your crime dramas all wrapped up in an hour, this is an ongoing story across all the episodes.

I bought the first series of The Wire based on the review that said this was the best show on US TV. I was skeptical due to the high quality of current US TV whether it is The Sopranos, 24, Deadwood etc - but my skepticism was unfounded - This is simply amazing.

The Wire follows the story of McNulty and his team of detectives in Baltimore investigating a single sprawling case that plays out over the whole series. Over the course of the series it shows the investigation from both sides namely the police and criminals but blurs the lines between who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. The Wire is full of humor, pathos, excitement and poignancy where seemingly inconsequential coincidences and events lead to major outcomes changing the path of the story.

I can't recommend this enough. The best show on US TV? - Certainly.

Smashing box set. Definetly worth watching. Story Line superb. Comes highly Recommended. Starts off slow, although this is to make u familiar with the characters. But soon kicks in to action. 10/10

This is truly the best TV show to come out of America in years. It takes a while to get into, but its so worth it in the end. It has an original perspective on American poverty and the problems of the state departments and is deeper than most Tv shows, but its also exciting and surprising. Something for everybody. Couldn't recommend more!

Everyone's been raving about The Wire - top critics saying things like "the best thing that's ever been on telly". But we'd missed it completely.
Everyone said we needed to start at series one so I was delighted to find series one on good old EBay.
We're at programme three now and are really into it. Quite a hoot how many things have changed in 8 years - the mobile phones are like house bricks!
Can't wait to watch the next episode.

I decided to buy it after a friend recommended it. I ve enjoyed the episodes I ve seen so far! The DVD was in good condition when I received it.

The Wire is a drama series following a single sprawling drug and murder ivnvestigation in Baltimore culiminating in a complex series of wiretaps and surveillance. It is gritty, witty, tense and engaging. The characters are well written - the good guys have their flaws and the bad guys their charms - and things aren't always as they first appear. If you haven't seen it yet, I would thoroughly recommend you give it a try.

This is probably the best TV show I have ever seen, I used to rank the Sopranos as my number 1 but this knocked it off the top spot.

It is so good because the characters as so well thought out with no clear lines of the cops being good and the drug dealers being bad. It also seems very realistic showing the cops struggling with all the red tape, a boss who just wants quick results and other cops who don't care and don't pull their weight. On the other side it shows how the low level drug dealers are not well off and are just doing this to get by as they would have no other means of earning money, you do end up liking some of the low level dealers as they do seem like real people which is not always the case in cop shows. It also has a very well thought out story line with certain aspects only lasting 1 episode, some lasting a few episodes and some lasting over the whole series which really pulls you in.

This realism leads to what may be the only criticism, you have to pay attention otherwise you will miss stuff and they talk like real people in that area talk, meaning it can be a little hard sometimes to work out what they are talking about but once you have watched 3 or 4 episodes you will understand and be hooked.

This said though it is amazing and I ordered the 2nd series the day I finished this one.

So perfectly written, directed and acted. You won't regret getting involved with this fine piece of television, providing you can stomache the grittiness/violence and language explored in this insight into the streets of Baltimore.

Good drama very witty dialogue. Makes you want to watch the next series. The drama is about police and drug dealers showing scenes as the cops try to catch the drug dealer's main man, will they suceed thats for you to watch and find out!

With the help of detective Shakima Greggs, the two do everything they can to bring down a powerful druglord... A television series created by a crime reporter David Simon and former detective Ed Burns.

this is definitely a milestone in television series making,telling a real story about the state of many cities,not only in the U.S of A,it is at times depressing,uplifting,humorous and serious. Recommended
