The Wire - Series 1-5 - Complete (DVD)

What can I say! We have just had the enormous pleasure of watching this whole series over the summer. It is a masterpiece. The writers talents have been compared to Dickens which although incredibly valid does not do them enough justice as writers of our times. I would go further and elect them as the Shakespeares of our era. The series has spanned 5 or 6 years and nothing has come close to matching this work of art in that time. I would go further and say I have never seen anything on any screen that comes close to matching the amazing results of the stunningly crafted combination of all the skills and talents involved. It would be fantastic to think it could be surpassed. I can imagine that this team of creators might be able to derive a rare kind of whole satisfaction from this achievement and sit on their laurels quite happily for the rest of their lives. [No doubt!]. For me I am so satisfied by their accomplishment and it is so beautifully complete that I feel it would be crass to ask for more. True dat!

Okay my title is provocative and also totally tongue in cheek. It is also the complete opposite of how I feel.

The Wire, a tightly inter-woven story about the social and political ills of Baltimore through the multiple perspectives of those involved is a MASTERPIECE of storytelling through the medium of television drama.

Police, politicians, drug dealers, dockers, schools all have their story to tell.
Needless to say the politicians are the seediest and those least deserving of our respect. But no one comes up squeaky clean.

The Wire glorifies nothing and attacks everythng. It works because the writing is of a quality that has rarely if ever been surpassed.

It doesn't look as visually gorgeous as The Sopranos and there isn't a central character as colosal Tony Soprano. There are people inhabiting the world of The Wire called Bunk, Bubbles, D,Ziggy,Stringer, The Brother, Major all of whom deserve to be watched telling the story of their everyday lives

The wire gives one heck of a lot. It is a work of true storytelling genius that has laid down markers for quality for years to come.

Why is it called The Wire, you might ask? Watch and find out....believe me it's way better than your usual rubbish!!

A really great series,i've never been one to get into Tv series but this is gripping from the beginning to the end,series 1 through to 5 each new episode eagerly awaited,telling a story about what is happening in cities around the world,and it's Barack Obama's favorite series,and his favorite character Omar,great.
This has to be one of the best things to be seen on Tv.

Really is one of the best shows out there, and will definitely last the ages. Well worth the buy! Maybe a little slow to start-off with, but you must must pay attention as the show is really absorbing and works on so many levels, and is not a cliche, but it is giving you the problem without being overly educational about its themes.

Quite simply excellent television - a must for those who enjoy gangster / police / political shows. This one truly has it all.

Superb series. Goes into every case in detail and doesn't hold back on the reality side of things. Quite simply the best TV show I've watched for many a year. I've seen all the first four series now and half way through the last and I'm actually dearding finishing the fifth series off, because its that addictive. Superb characters, some to look out for are Bunk Moreland, Omar Little and Clay Davies.
