Voices from Hollywood's Golden Age
Review created: 14/02/08(updated 18/02/08)
Yes, the Golden Age, but not always Golden Voices! What a fabulous CD though: where else could you find, not one, but three varied recordings by different artists and in different languages of that Conrad Veidt classic "Where the Lighthouse Shines across the Bay" - a recording I'd been wanting for nearly 30 years! Here too, you can marvel at why Ramon Novarro didn't have better success in the MGM musicals since this proves he had a lovely voice (perhaps it was the destructive combination of devout Catholicism, coupled with a fondness for drink and working-class boys); and can be quietly grateful that his rival Valentino died before the Age of the Talkie: his two tracks, recorded in 1923 are truly terrible by any standards. If you're a Hollywood buff, or just enjoy wallowing in nostalgia, seek out another of these gems and buy it now!
