Album Notes
Oasis: Noel Gallagher (vocals, guitar, E-Bow, piano, Mellotron); Liam Gallagher (vocals); Paul Arthurs (guitar, piano, Mellotron); Paul McGuigan (bass); Alan White (drums, percussion).Additional personnel: Paul Weller (guitar, background vocals); Tony McCarroll (drums).Recorded at Rockfield Studios, South Wales, United Kingdom."Wonderwall" was nominated for 1997 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The state of English popular music in the mid-'90s will be looked back upon as a time when groups like Blur, Supergrass and Oasis rode the UK charts with a style (nicknamed Brit-Pop by that country's press) that fused the 1960s pop aesthetic of the Beatles, Kinks and Small Faces with the flamboyance and cocksuredness of T. Rex and the Buzzcocks. But (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? is a more tempered follow-up to Oasis' 1994 debut, DEFINITELY MAYBE, the band having gone from enfant terrible to dreamy romantic this time round. Oasis has also crossed the Atlantic this time; (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY has made the band a major U.S. success.Toning down the brattiness, Oasis guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher brings minimal orchestration into the mix, while still mining for inspiration in the past. A buzzing amp cues up the opening cut, "Hello," before giving way to a thunderous rocker that credits Gary Glitter as a co-writer by way of a line lifted from his "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again." The innovative use of strings on songs like "Cast No Shadow," "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger" avoids any mawkishness, leaning more towards a melancholy sheen. Such ambitious chance-taking turns "Don't Look Back In Anger" into a grand epic that has singer Liam Gallagher sounding like Ian Hunter to brother Noel's Mick Ronson. All these external tools do nothing to detract from Oasis' ability to play rock and roll with a religious fervor. The first version of "The Swamp Song" (the untitled track 6) is a bluesy, instrumental rave-up complete with a wailing harmonica that sounds unlike anything they've done before. It's followed by "Some Might Say," a sweeping epic layered with chunky riffs. While new pal Paul Weller's guitar lends some grit to "Champagne Supernova," the best song on MORNING GLORY is "She's Electric," a '90s equivalent to "Itchycoo Park" with the end-chorus of "With A Little Help From My Friends" grafted onto it.

  The Great Gamble

Following the phenomenal success of the rock n' roll classic 'Definately Maybe' (and remember this was at a time when guitar-based rock was not in vogue!) Oasis were faced with the dilemma of whether to take the same successful formula, remould and rehash it to make to make 'Definately Maybe II' or whether to risk all and to challenge their audiance into accepting a rather different face to the band and Noel's song-writing talent.

They took the latter option and the result was 'What's the Story?' - an album that broke new ground but which probably left many of their traditional fan base behind - hence the less than ecstatic reviews that the album has recieved.

Ten years down the line, and after the sometimes erratic musical output by the band, 'Whats the Story?' is as fresh and alive as Oasis ever managed to sound. Noels songs and the bands' performance is cohesive, succinct and engaging.

In many ways this album defines the Oasis that could have been had the excesses of rock n roll that destroyed their third album not kicked in. 'Whats the Story?' is an album that should be in all music fans CD collection - but mainly for the rock gems that hide between its classic singles tracks.

This album is wall to wall classic.

Champagne Supernova is my favourite, but there are so many good tracks on this album you would probably be hard pressed to not find at least one.

WONDERFUL

  Oasis at their best!

Oasis' second album and in my opinion their best. It went multi-platinum and has (I think) been their best-selling album to date. And rightly so - any album that includes songs of the calibre of Wonderwall (such a good cover that they made the song their own), Don't Look Back in Anger, Some Might Say, She's Electric and Champagne Supernova merits serious attention and listening time. When Oasis eventually and inevitably produce their 'Best of' album, don't be surprised if many songs from Morning Glory make an appearance.

Oasis - (Whats The Story) Morning Glory?

I'll tell you what the story is, bloody marvellous.

Oasis not only Rock and Roll, but they Rock some more followed by even more Rolling.

The follow up to their infamous 'Definitely Maybe' is by far their finest hour in my opinion.

The album opens up with the introductory rocking 'Hello' to get you in the mood before one of the most in-your-face to hell with it attitude songs by Oasis 'Roll With It' leaves you desperate for more.

What follows is quite simply of the greatest songs ever written and produced; 'Wonderwall' need one say more?

Noel takes lead vocals and shreds guitar in the legendary 'Don't look back in Anger' to prove that his talents are incomparable to any other singer/songwriter/guitarist in the world.

Liam returns and rocks us through the next two tracks, 'Hey Now' and Oasis first UK number one single, 'Some Might Say,' the latter being one of the tracks that simply defines Oasis music.

Noel provides a moment of melodic magic in, 'Cast no Shadow' which really deserves more credit than given and is used in the 2005 movie 'Goal.' 'She's Electric' is masterfully written and excellently sung by Liam Gallagher and really deserves more recognition than given and should have been released as a single.

What follows is quite possibly the greatest track ever to open up a live gig, 'Morning Glory' is 5 minutes of non stop great rock 'n' roll and can only be appreciated in it's true brilliance on full volume.

7 minutes and 27 seconds, the wonderful guitar solos and the sound of champagne sloshing on the track make 'Champagne Supernova' quite possibly the greatest track on the album and one of Oasis best ever.

(What's The Story) Morning Glory will re-write everything you thought you knew about Rock 'n' Roll and will forever go down as one of the greatest albums of all time throughout all of time. Buy it, buy it now is all a fella can say.
