You don't have to be a Jonny Cash fan to like this!

was not a big fan of Jonny Cash's music before seeing this film, and it really does not matter if you were a fan or not the film is simply brilliant. At it's core this is a story of Cash's difficult childhood and his long running love for his backing singer June Carter. The acting by the two principal actors, Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon is of the highest order and it was not until after watching the film that I found out they both sang thier parts. Neither stray into pastiche impersonations, which would have been an easy trap with a well known character like Cash.
For me this was even better than "Ray" (and I was a big fan of Ray Charles), which has many parallels in the story.
Deserves the accolades it has received, see it you will love it.

This film is the best i have watched in years, the actor playing Johnny is amazing and the story told is exciting.

The songs throughout the film are recogniseable and you can have a great sing along to them.

This movie is a must, rent it, buy it, borrow it but make sure you watch it.

Just wow

When i heard it was about Johnny cash, i kindof shunned away from it. But after good review from several friends i decided to give it a try. I must say i was pleasantly surprised - a bit slow to start, but a really enjoyable film.
Guaranteed to start your feet tapping, and prompted me to start trawling the net to find the music to download.
A love and life story, and well worth watching.

  WHAT A MOVIE

PLEASE REMEMBER TO RATE THIS REVIEW

Before I went to see this movie, I was not expecting much due to hype. However, I was so wrong. Five minutes into it, I was hooked! The characters are so beautifully played and the story is so engrossing, I didn't want it to end. Joaquin Phoenix makes an excellent Johnny Cash, even getting his distinctive voice down to a t and Reese Witherspoon excels as June Carter and the chemistry between the two works perfectly. Perhaps the only fault is Tyler Hilton's unconvincing portrayal of Elvis, but that really is nitpicking. The film is honest yet thoroughly entertaining, romantic without being too sappy, very moving and ultimately suprisingly uplifting. This really is a stunning piece of cinema. If only all biopics were this good!

To anyone who knows about Johnny Cash, or is a fan as i am, this is obviously a great film and a awesome to watch. The acting couldnt be more spot on from all sides. Not only was the acting great, but also the singing - which could be even be considered to be better then Cash himself, if it wasnt the ruged sound of his voice that made him into what he became.

Even if you are not a fan of Cash, this film still has something really worth watching. I'm sure that the film has turned many unsuspecting viewers into devout fans.

All in all, if you want a good film that will make you want to get up out of your chair and form a band, this film could well be the one. For fans of Cash there is really no other film that depicts Cash as well as this. Even if you dont like it, you will still know about one of the worlds most important singers and song writers who really gave the world a slap in the face.

This film has become one of my favourites.
The acting talent is superb and the whole cast really become 'real' to you. The atmosphere of the film; in that time period in the mid west of america and the cinematography; is beautiful. When you are watching you feel like you have become part of the scenery.
I would recommend this film to anyone, whether you liked Jhonny Cash or not, it really is a must-see. I have plenty of friends that hardly know anything about Mr.Cash or his music and they have all really enjoyed the film.
I wasn't really a big fan myself before I watched the film for the first time....needless to say this film makes the story if his life, and him as a character, really interesting.
Great film!

It brought a tear to my eye more than once, and had me gripped from beginning to end. I truly cared about these characters, it was more than just a film, it was an emotional experience like I haven’t seen since the Shawshank Redemption. I can’t deny, I loved every minute. Walk the Line is a biopic of country singer Johnny Cash, played by Joaquin Phoenix who gives a fantastic performance alongside Reese Witherspoon who won an academy award for her part as June Carter. I have to say this is one of the finest pairings I’ve seen. The two seem to have a real connection which is probably the most talked about aspect of the film, but it is by no means the only aspect worth mentioning. In fact, there isn’t any aspect I wouldn’t like to mention, the entire film is just shockingly good, I’d really have to rack my brain to find even a minor a complaint. There’s no denying the similarities it shares with Ray Charles’ Biopic ‘Ray’ but it doesn’t struggle to step out of Ray’s shadow, and in my opinion Walk the Line is the better of the two films, with stronger, more emotional character development and relationships that will leave you breath taken. Here’s one for the DVD collection! Don’t let it pass you by, this really is as close as you can get to perfection.

  What about Cash?
Review created: 31/07/06

Now I’m a BIG CASH fan. Ever since hearing “A Boy Named Sue”, I have devoted hours of precious listing time to “the Man in black”. The hype the Oscars and the expensive advertisement campaign have only boosted my enthusiasm for watching ’his life story’. After what seems like an eon I have seen the movie that Hollywood has woven together. My conclusion ; Don’t buy the DVD! Although the acting is of a very high standard. The camera work is at the worst great, and the chemistry between ‘Cash’ and ‘June’ is very believable.
However, this is not the Cash I know and Love. This movie is at its core a fanciful Hollywood love story with a seasoning of truth. We expect to see the tormented Cash through the years, what we see is a tormented ‘will they, won’t they?’ love story and no attempt to discover the man BEHIND the black .
Concluded - see it on a first date. Just don’t expect to be forever changed by this movie.

Surprisingly good film - not just for country music fan

I went to see this with my in-laws in the states. Not being a fan of country music, and having vaguely heard of Johnny Cash before, I was mostly looking forward to the popcorn. However, this was a very well made film which kept me glued from start to finish. The storyline was gripping, and the acting was excellent.

I'd definitely recommend this film to anyone - you definitely dont have to be interested in country music to enjoy it.

Amazing film, a bit of a slow start start as the film does a bit of character building. This is a great story about the life of Johnny Cash. I have never been a country music lover but it didn't matter as you do not have to like country music to appreciate this film.

The acting and camera shots are of a very high calibre. This is a film I would definitely recommend.

Just love this film. Saw it on the tv and wanted to watch it again with our teenage son. He loved it too. Since watching the film have become a real fan of Johnny Cash's hits and listen to his cd all the time. Previous to seeing the film I hadn't really been a fan at all. Recommend the film.

  Johnny Cash
Review created: 04/05/09
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When Johnny Cash died in 2003 the music world mourned the passing of a legend. But life hadn't always been a bed of roses for the veteran superstar: there were times when he fell out of the public's gaze, times when his addictions threatened his life and times when his personal life lay in tatters. James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted, Cop Land) has directed a new film which looks at the early part of Cash's career, and replete with a trio of Golden Globe Awards, the film looks sure to capture the cinema-going public in Britain as well as it has done in the United States, where it has taken an impressive $100m at the box office.

The film traces Cash's life from his days as a child on a cotton farm in Arkansas to his infamous gig at Folsom prison in 1968, where he recorded some of his best-known versions of classic songs. At Sun records in Memphis he began as an unknown in the brave new world of rock and roll, but his distinctive drawl and penchant for traditional sound soon saw him carving a niche as a crossover artist who took country music to the masses. On the bill with the likes of Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, Cash became an instant hit: his brooding good looks giving him an aura of mystery, and his trademark black attire singling him out as an alternative kind of hero.

But if his professional life was relatively plain sailing, his paid the price domestically. Trapped in a marriage which he increasingly began to question, Cash became an early victim of the lures of the road: soon enough painkillers and Class A drugs became his mistress of choice. Only through the support and love of his second wife, June Carter, did he manage to claw his way out of a potential life-or-death situation.

In Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, Mangold has found two actors born to play their roles. Both have been carving out impressive careers with different types of films, and that's perhaps why their chemistry works so well together: if Cash and his wife were polar opposites for a long time at the beginning of their relationship, the two actors certainly carry it off convincingly. Phoenix's Cash is nonchalant and often aloof, but blessed with musical genius while as Carter Witherspoon radiates on the outside as a folksy all-American gal, while underneath she is as tough as nails.

Add to this some fine music - and there's plenty of it, sung in his own voice by Phoenix - and all the ingredients are there for a classic biopic. That it never quite reaches the highest level is perhaps due to the script which lingers too long on a short period, allowing for several repetitive argument scenes between the two leads, and totally ignoring the last 35 years of Cash's life. What's there is great - it's just a shame that we couldn't have found out even more about the Man in Black.
