Well, Sure Was Better Than What I Expected!! Good Movie
Review created: 15/05/06
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I set out to watch this film, only because it was the only one on Sky movies that night, which I had not already seen. I didnt expect much, mostly because it looked like a mystical thriller set in the olden days, well thats how I perceived it from the trailers. These type of films not being my type. Plus after watching 'Signs', another of director 'M. Night Shyamalan's' blockbusters. I was expecting to watch another film which would be so boring that I would be falling asleep and laughing at the films lame attempts at trying to make me jump! THIS FILM IS MUCH BETTER THAN 'SIGNS'. M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN HAS DEFINITELY CHANGED MY OPINION OF HIS DIRECTING TO A MUCH BETTER ONE, AFTER WATCHING THIS FILM.

Well I was completely wrong! This film, however based on an olden day village had such a twist towards the end of its story line. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes a good thriller! I dont want to say anything other than this film is definitely worth watching, because I dont want to give away the Fantastic twist in the story line. Watch it and see if you can work out whats going to happen.

I feel that this film has earned a place in my DVD collection, so I am off to buy myself a copy here from eBay now.

  Simply Fantastic
Review created: 06/06/09

I started watching 'The Village' with an open mind. I hadn't even heard of the film before then. So, after watching it, I couldn't believe I hadn't known about the film previously. It was simply fantastic. Everything was right - the acting was great, the setting amazing and the twist was, well, unexpected.

In short - 'The Village' was a joy to behold. It's scary, full of suspense and drama, and Shyamalan produced a classic here. Even the soundtrack was spot on. It was dramatic, or calming when it needed to be, and captured the moments of suspense and fear perfectly.

A must-see if there ever was one!

The best thing about the film is the soundtrack, if you have 5.1 surround it is brilliant as for the film its a bit like a strange dream, i.e. you cant get it out of your mind for a few days, but your glad you saw it in the first place, it is well worth watching but not just before going to bed LOL

  Not for Me i'm affraid.
Review created: 17/09/08(updated 17/09/08)

M Night Shyamalan directed the wonderful film The Sixth Sense.
I then bought The Villiage expecting Brilliance.
I had to sit through something so bad that i concider this film along with Open Water the worst film of all time.
Sorry not for me this one.

Could be fantastic, but the plot is a farce.
Review created: 26/04/08

Another wonderfully created M Night Shyamalan Film which is beautifully shot with the best musical score I have heard by James Newton Howard.
Technically it is brilliant, but the plot is full of holes and anyone with an inquisitive mind will dismiss it completely.
Still recommended, but don't expect it to come anywhere near as goos as The Sixth Sense or Signs as a whole.

A wonderful movie delightfully shot, with a rich soundtrack the movie is an atmospheric masterpiece about the nature of belief, paranoia and mass panic.

Wonderful!

This is the type of film that is suspense all the way to the end, it makes you think totally towards the wrong conclusion and then it hits you right when you never expect it!
I would describe it as another Sleepy Hollow or at least along those lines!
Enjoy............

  The Village (Shyalaman)
Review created: 08/02/08

I've long been a fan of MKS but had been told that this was his weakest film to date. However, I still wanted to see it and I was not disappointed one bit. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the "twist" was definitely one of his best yet. I did not see it coming. The whole film leads you into a false sense of security about what is happening and you think, two thirds of the way through, that the "twist" has happened. The end of the film had me sitting with my mouth wide open! The characters are so believable you can almost be in the setting with them, and every one of them is sympathetic, including the "bad guy". The setting of the village itself is idyllic to the point that, if it wasn't fictional, it would be a pull for visits by film buffs. There is everything you could want in the film - love, horror, jumps, surprises, unexpectedness and excellent characters. I couldn't find any weaknesses amongst any of the actors - all played their parts superbly. I really cannot rate this film high enough. Well and truly recommended. One word of warning - if you are a "seat of the pants" hard-core horror fanatic, this isn't for you.

  The Village (DVD 2005)

s the "secret" of M. Night Shyamalan's mythic O. Henry saga The Village out yet? You'll hear a large, rattling groan of film-geek frustration when it does leak into the water table, because it's got the hype-payback thrill of softcore cable porn. Which, when the smoke-machine fog clears, makes this movie the screwiest yarn yet from Shyamalan's metaphysical-Limburger career project, a non-horror horror film abstracted into a straight-faced parable about fearful conservatism and, gulp, the essential goodness of religious lies.

I think. What era is this semi-Mennonite/colonial re-enactment village, peopled by "elders" (William Hurt, Cherry Jones, Brendan Gleeson, et al.) and their 18th-century-lingo children, supposed to be set in? Why are virtually all of the actors speaking like Pilgrims in a fourth-grade play? ("What is your meaning?" is an incidental sample of the dialogue this sporting cast had to handle.) What are the snarling creatures in the woods that threaten the valley, and why do they like the color red? Where'd they get their red cloaks and red paint from?

The answers, if they come, are far from satisfying from any pulp-world perspective; Shyamalan's ideas are strictly circular, and blithely mow down any narrative sense or pleasure in their path, like a driverless tractor. Elsewhere on the Shyamalan résumé there was also a sharp-eared feel for emotional bearings, but The Village is so meaningless and distanced in its details that it hardly stands a chance of wooing even the most willing fellow traveler. Predicated at first on a Blair Witch–esque anxiety about primeval American woods, the film methodically evolves into a kind of Bierce-ified Twilight Zone episode—the sort that pivoted on moral homilies rather than universalized dread. It's odd, to say the least, to see Shyamalan's rote blockbuster reflexes—power dollies, shock soundtracks blams, etc.—in the service of this arch, insubstantial nonsense.

The budding romance between reticent, restless village youth Joaquin Phoenix and vivacious blind teen Bryce Dallas Howard benefits from Shyamalan's knack for writing shapely, talky scenes, and a single shot of a knifing has more inventive power than the rest of the film all piled up together. But, finally, The Village is creepily rad-con—what Rod Serling might've excoriated with glib pronouncements while holding a smoldering cig, Shyamalan embraces with a reactionary group hug, resigned forever to dozing prayerfully in a Ludditic past. Suffice it to say, without spoiling anything for anyone, that it's a film a White House full of evangelicals could've written, given a little prodding, a little pot, and a day-long Zone marathon.

  The Village
Review created: 10/05/07

'The Village' depicts the thrilling tale of an isolated town confronting the astonishing truth that lies just outside its borders. At first glance, this village seems picture perfect, but this close-knit community lives with the frightening knowledge that creatures reside in the surrounding woods. The evil and foreboding force is so unnerving that none dare venture beyond the borders of the village and into the woods. But when curious, headstrong Lucius Hunt plans to step beyond the boundaries of the town and into the unknown, his bold move threatens to forever change the future of the village.

After all the hype I had expected a good old fashioned "edge of your seat" horror movie...Oh boy was I dissapointed!
I sat through this film thinking "Surely things can only get better?" but sadly it never happened, A boring first half hour was followed by more of the same...I actually began to feel embarrased for the cast who were obviously trying their best to breath a little life into an already dead film.
My advice? pick up a copy of British made "Dog Soldiers" and a bag of popcorn, a cracking film that is everything that "The Village" is not!

  excellent film one amazing twist
Review created: 13/11/06

if you are wondering weather or not to buy this film certainly do, it's absolutely amaizing and throws away your conceptions of what you think is wierd for example who ever thought a car horn could be wierd? if you read the bad reviews about this also look at the other reviews people have left one person gave this a 1- poor but they gave james blunt a 5 for the most boring addition to music ever back to bedlam. some people really need there heads looking at by doctors who write bad reviews for this film and really dont know a good film from a really bad one.
thanks for reading this review and i hope it inspires you to buy the film and then of course sell it on so someone else can get the pleasure of watching it. you really want to pay £3 inc postage for it thats what i got it for and that was easy bidding,

Hmmm, not a bad film I suppose. A bit slow. So slow in fact that I spent most of the time after the half way point wondering how it would turn out. Trouble is I had so much time to think about it that I turned out to be right so I was disappointed that it was so transparent.
Still, the storyline has some merit as to what may happen if the world carries on destroying itself like it is?
You never know, some people may already be living like this?

The Village - A Clever Film Filled with Suspense!
Review created: 08/10/06
by:

I bought this film after I saw Scary Movie 4 cause they had 'spoofed' the Village in that film and I wanted to understand it better! I have to say that the Village is not particularly frightening in the traditional horror movie style but it certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat! It's well acted and very atmospheric with a great twist at the end, I didnt think it looked all that interesting when it first came out but I'm glad I watched it as it really got me thinking I believe that it has a lot to say about peoples attitudes and fears as well as just being a fun story. Try it if you dont like your movies too scary and appreciate having something to think about. I'm very glad I decided to get it!
