This movie is unimaginably difficult to follow right from the off. Throughout the entire movie, the situation jumps from incidents that happen in the future, the past, in real life and in a fantasy life. If you can keep up with what's happening, then you'll appreciate the pieces of the jigsaw being placed together to answer the inevitable questions you'll raise.
Tom Cruise stars as David Aames who is the blessed man with literally everything. He has a large inheritance from his father's death; a large, well-equipped apartment in the centre of New York and, seemingly all the beautiful women falling at his feet. None of these women mean anything more to him than meaningless encounters until he meets Sofia, played by the Spaniard Penélope Cruz. He instantly takes a shine to Sofia and pursues her attention which incites jealousy from f**k buddy, Julie Gianni, played by Cameron Diaz.
In a moment of madness, Julie drives herself and David off a bridge which destroys David's face. David cannot bear the pain and his restrictive lifestyle, despite his extensive costly surgery. He commits suicide after making a contract with Life Extension, a company offering him the Lucid Dream.
To differentiate between David's Lucid Dream and his real life existence is the challenge presented to the viewer, so be warned, do not doze off and give it your full attention, or you'll miss that one piece of the jigsaw!
