  Nirvana - In Utero (1993)
Review created: 17/10/09
by:

In Utero is the third and final studio album by the American grunge band Nirvana, released on September 13, 1993, on DGC Records. Nirvana intended the record to diverge significantly from the polished production of its previous album, Nevermind (1991). To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, the group hired producer Steve Albini to record In Utero during a two-week period in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio. The music was recorded quickly with few studio embellishments, and the song lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and his band's newfound fame.

Soon after recording was completed, rumors circulated in the press that DGC might not release the album in its original state, as the record label felt that the result was not commercially viable. Although Nirvana publicly denied the statements, the group was not fully satisfied with the sound Albini had captured. Albini declined to alter the album further, and ultimately the band hired Scott Litt to make minor changes to the album's sound and remix the singles "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies".

Upon release, In Utero entered the Billboard 200 chart at number one and received critical acclaim as a drastic departure from Nevermind. The record has been certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, and has sold over four million copies in the United States alone.

Album notes
Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar); Kris Novoselic (bass); Dave Grohl (drums).Additional personnel: Kera Schaley (cello).IN UTERO was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album."All Apologies" was nominated for 1995 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and for Best Rock Song."Teenage angst has paid off well," growls Kurt Cobain on IN UTERO's opening fusilade, "Serve The Servants," suggesting that perhaps success has spoiled Nirvana. Not! IN UTERO is a howling, defiantly punkish recording, an unsentimental throwback to an era of garage band epiphanies and raw, unadorned rock and roll. On IN UTERO, Nirvana rails against both "alternative" conformity and polished notions of commercial rock with the anthemic rage of true outcasts. Engineer-producer Steve Albini has enabled Nirvana to replicate the savage immediacy of their live sound--the sound of a band without commercial aspirations or pretensions, just thrashing away for the sheer joy of noise. Drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic play with heroic power as guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Kurt Cobain overlays their growling beat with shards of broken glass and shattered dreams. On "Scentless Apprentice" each Cobain power chord is tempered by a series of calculated dissonances and melodic fragments, while the singer bares his vulnerability and anger through Nirvana's familiar soft-hard-soft-hard structures on "Heart Shaped Box" and "Rape Me." Through his crunching guitar and elliptical lyrics on various diseases and recoveries, Cobain lays bare the turmoil and resentments, the physical and mental ailments (self-inflicted and otherwise) that have colored Nirvana's notoriety. Instead of celebrating their success, Nirvana have fashioned a powerful cautionary tale on IN UTERO, to wit: that fame, acclaim and wealth are not liberating; that music like this cannot be produced on an assembly line, then be used once and tossed on a scrap heap; that life and music was a lot more fun when they were back playing for an audience of nine in some grungy club. IN UTERO is too strong and honest to ignore.

  The most cohesive Nirvana album.
Review created: 15/04/08

This is by far the most cohesive Nirvana album. It just makes sense as a whole, when listening from begining to end. It is also my favourite for production and overall mix. It is most definately the best Nirvana album.

  WHITE PAIN
Review created: 20/03/08(updated 30/03/08)

KC is to sunshine what Kurdt Cobain was, is, and forever will be to the anguished, sloppy hearts of millions of adorers like myself. I don't know what funk has to do with this review, other than the smell of Teen Spirit, but kurt was simply a lovable soul with a voice like bitter-sweet toffee that pulls your favourite tooth ouch!
Play in peace Kurt. And for the Kurt in you: buy a bottle of whiskey, this CD album, some mojo of your flavour, and savour pain of acid bile on fire for the love of an honest heart. Tourette's.
I recommend you buy this album if you don't already own it. I believe Kurt felt it realized his vision more than Nevermind.
