Album Notes
U Roy is known as "the Originator," and his toasting style (which involves singing and improvising over pre-recorded musical tracks) is conversational, somewhat jazzy, and gives equal attention to social messages, Rastafarian claims, and exhortations for the listener to join in the spirit of the music. Some of U Roy's earliest and best records were cut with producer Tony Robinson, whose penchant for selecting beloved reggae hits and reinterpreting them with new musicians and studio treatments proved the perfect vehicle for U Roy's skills.RASTA AMBASSADOR is one of the finest platters that came of the U Roy/Robinson partnership, not least for its roster of musicians. Some of the era's hottest studio hands are on deck, including "the Riddim Twins"--Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar on bass and drums, respectively. The vocal group the Gladiators, in particular, helps shape the album's sound with sweet, lilting harmonies that recall early rocksteady and the nostalgic ring of American doo-wop. This is contrasted with Robinson's dub-influenced studio effects (which favor echo and reverb), and Sly & Robbie's deep, shifting rhythms. Re-castings of hits like John Holt's "The Tide Is High" and Bob Marley's "Small Axe," with U Roy toasting in grand style all the while, make this outing a must.
