The Sound of Young Scotland

This, perhaps, was the finest debut album of 2007.
The Twilight Sad, it seems, made inroads in the USA before anyone in the UK's elitist music press decided to take notice. This is an album where the music and lyrics connect on an emotional level and leave a gut-wrenching impression. Track 2 was the first song the band wrote together and is therefore the most poignant. Never has an accordion player left you feeling so overwrought. It has to be said that the vocalist has a distinctive singing style, which remains defiantly and proudly Scottish. Kudos to the chap for showing bravery in the first place. The lead guitarist manages to conjure up soundscapes that allude to (but never plagiarise)the sonic majesty of My Bloody Valentine coupled with the melodic post-rock of the peerless Explosions in The Sky. Meanwhile the rhythm section keep it glued together in a stoical way.
Stand out track is "And She Would Darken The Memory", a track that probably captures the band at their euphoric/emotional best.
I hope these boys make it.
