I shouldn't like this, I know I shouldn't, but I just can't help myself. Elizabeth R, it ain't, but then, when it comes to re writing history it's no worse than the various Elizabethan epics, and more honest than a fair few other pretenders. It reminds us, for instance, of the darker side of Thomas More (Jeremy Northam), whose ideals carry him to the edge of fanaticism. The Tudors doesn't much pretend to historical analysis, which makes a refreshing change. And although it's big on style, it's strong on character, well acted and crisply written, enough to make it's modern colloquy appear 'real' for any age. With a cracking, quality cast, rounded characters, a big story and dark, well crafted sub plots, it's no witless Ben Hur style epic. The Tudors is a rollercoaster ride of crackling soap...passionate, political, temperamental. The cast is excellent across the board, but look out for Sam Neill's perceptive portrayal of Wolsey, as a man whose world is disintegrating around him.
