Denzel Washington earns oscar for Best Actor!!!!!

One of the finest films to have come out of Hollywood in recent years, this is a professional, questioning, complex piece of film-making.
Ethan Hawke plays Jake Hoyt, a rookie cop hoping to break into the narcotics division. Unfortunately he is teamed up with Alonso (Denzel Washington), who is a crooked cop.

Denzel won an Oscar for his tremendous portrayal of a cop gone bad. At times both charming, yet eerily sinister, his questionable ethics are the focus point of the film, as Hawke gets drawn into this man's crooked world. Some of the situations are unflinching. Does Hawke do what he's told by his commanding officer, or does he do what he know is right?

Hawke's own performance is also Oscar worthy, and it's a shame that he didn't win one. He's also a fine actor, and his time will undoubtadly come. It was also refreshing to see Washington is such a different role to what he usually plays. Trust me, you won't recognise him!

The film is fast paced, and the storyline unfolds throughout the film as more things become revealed. The film has a prevailing, threatening feel throughout, that makes it genuinely hard to pull your eyes off the screen.

My only niggle is the use of rap stars and singers to fill in the support characters. While performing quite well, this element of it was un-needed, and just detracted from the film when you saw a famous rap artist when you're sucked into a believable film. A minor niggle, because you will never see any Macy Gray, Snoop Dog or Dr. dre act better than they did here.

This is an unflinching, moral story, that will really get you involved. The DVD also contains a 15 minute making of that is quite watchable, some rubbish deleted scenes that make you glad they were deleted from the final film and an alternate ending. Two music videos also roudn out the half hours worth of extras, but bizarrely the music vids are not done by any of the musical artists that appeared in the film!

Initially this film seemed to be an intriguing and intelligent movie; you’re not sure whether to sympathise with Denzel Washington’s bad cop. Unfortunately, any ambiguities are abandoned about half-way as the plot becomes totally unbelievable and disintegrates into a ‘typical shot-em-up punch up’ ending. Denzel is good playing against type, but he got his Oscar not for this film, but for performances he has given in earlier much better films

  Training Day Rewiewed!
Review created: 27/09/07

Being a film about race, gangsters, drugs and the like there’s bound to be a fair few small cameos that deliver some extra punch, so to speak. But this time there’s a decidedly musical flavour. Making appearances throughout the film are Dr. Dre as a detective who doesn’t take too kindly to Jake’s moral standings, Snoop Dogg as a drug dealer in a wheelchair and even Macy Gray, who is pretty humorous as a drug-using mother, complete with bad make-up, bad hair and extremely long fingernails. I hate her music but she’s pretty good in this flick.

Training Day is a very interesting movie, one that steers well away from the familiar detective genre. Director Antoine Fuqua has taken the next step from a visually exciting but lacking in coherent narrative (read The Replacement Killers) into a film with much more on offer in the storyline stakes. Right from the start Alonzo will drag you in, taking poor young Jake along with him.

  Training Day

Every day, there is a war being waged on America’s inner city streets--a war between residents, drug dealers and the people sworn to protect one from the other. This war has its casualties, none greater than L.A.P.D. Detective Sergeant Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington), a 13-year veteran narcotics officer whose questionable methodology blurs the line between legality and corruption. His optimism has long since been chipped away by his tour of duty in the streets, where fighting crime by the book can get you killed, and getting the job done often requires Alonzo and his colleagues to break the laws they are empowered to enforce.

A gritty, realistic drama set in the morally ambiguous world of undercover police investigation, Training Day shadows Alonzo as he tests the resolve of idealistic rookie Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke), who has one day and one day only to prove himself to his fiercely charismatic superior. Over the next 24 hours, Jake will be pulled deeper and deeper into the ethical mire of Alonzo’s logic as both men put their lives and career on the line to serve their conflicting notions of justice. Training Day is a blistering action drama that asks the audience to decide what is necessary, what is heroic and what crosses the line in the harrowing gray zone of fighting urban crime. Does law-abiding law enforcement come at the expense of justice and public safety? If so, do we demand safe streets at any cost? Or do we risk our security by insisting that those empowered to protect us do so within the boundaries of the law?

At a time when police across the nation are battling a public image of rampant corruption, narcotics use, planting evidence and excess brutality while patrolling the meanest streets of America, Training Day paints a gripping and realistic portrait of the war taking place on the urban front lines--and just how high the costs of this battle can be.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures and NPV Entertainment, the gripping drama Training Day, an Outlaw Production starring Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. The film also stars Scott Glenn, Tom Berenger, and Cliff Curtis. Adding to the film’s urban authenticity is a diverse supporting cast that includes Platinum-selling recording artists Dr. Dre, Macy Gray, and Snoop Dogg.

Training Day is a movie that comes straight from the streets it depicts--a product of the match up between screenwriter David Ayer, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, and director Antoine Fuqua, who grew up on the rough side of Pittsburgh. Both men are intimately familiar with the daily, potentially explosive face-offs between cops and criminals in urban America.

"Our generation doesn’t have a Vietnam, and we don’t have any external wars, but the war we’re fighting is within--it’s inside the very heart and core of America," says Antoine Fuqua. "In communities across the country, the police are fighting the people and vice versa. It’s an explosive situation and it’s something that urgently needs to be talked about."

Hadn't even considered buying this DVD, then when browsing through the DVD's section this came up cheap, and I bought it. I'm glad I did. A bit slow to start as you don't really know which way the movie is going, then 'wham' it had me riveted to the screen(which has never happened in a long time). A bit of a character change for Denzil. Some great plots and twists, a well written an directed film-worthy of it's awards. Would thoroughly recommend this movie. 5 stars.

My wife and I are great fans of Denzel Washington, and 95% of his films are first class acting, and exiting adventures. We have all the film he has made (I think ) and are allways on the look out for any we have missed. And it goes without saying that we only buy his films now on the DVD media because of the quality sound and picture

..there are countless films that portray east-coast US slums, ven in the past few years, so why is this so good it 1 a US award (see below)...wow...

the script is OK but that's it, the scene sets are a little flimsy, but not great dialogue...& with one cameo scene from Denzel which, I think he swears & they Give him a Oscar (you shoul look at who got Bet Female for that years too)

even froma pop-corn point of view, this is bareley above shallow

6/10 & not a penny more

Training Day is an excellent film. The acting talents of Denzel washington and Ethan Hawke really shine in this film. Throughout the film Denzel Washingtons character is crossed between good and bad. We dont really know if he is the villain in the film or whether he uses corruption as a tactic to solve the case, or for his own good.

Highly recomend buying this film

  Training Day ( DVD )
Review created: 16/07/09
by:

In "Training Day," Jake Hoyt (Hawke) is an ambitious, but somewhat naïve, young cop who has been with the Los Angeles Police Department for 19 months. He believes the way to achieve his goals is to follow in the footsteps of veteran narcotics detective Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington).

Jake meets Alonzo and is immediately impressed by the veteran's roguish charm. Then Harris takes Hoyt to L.A.'s mean streets, where they confiscate marijuana laced with PCP, and Hoyt is caught off guard when Harris makes him smoke some of it.

Jake realizes that corruption extends to very high levels. Later, Alonzo, Jake, and other policemen raid a drug dealer's house, where events orchestrated by Alonzo transpire that force the young cop to make a fateful decision. The rest of the movie goes on to reveal what Alonzo was really attempting to accomplish with Jake and how the long training day comes out for both men.

This is a fantastic movie and should not be missed!

I bought this dvd on ebay for 99p! Bargain.
Great film... If you come home from work and you've had a bad day, and nothing has gone right watch this film...For Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke)this has to be the longest, worst day of his life!!! From a traffic cop to detective will he make it? He is made to break rules and cross lines. Great acting from Washington and Hawke throughout, great unpredictable ending. One to watch.

If the price this film fetches on ebay is anything to go by, it's seriously under rated. Denzil Washington is superb and it's very refreshing to see him in a different role to his usual fare. You never know what is coming next from this unpredictable character, which describes the film too. Full of twists and turns, I've watched it 3 times and never tired of it. Not a bad actor in sight and an intriguing plot. 1st class and a refreshing change from all the over hyped disappointing films that are around at the moment.
