Traffic is the best film about drugs

Traffic deserved to win five Oscars. Steven Soderbergh has captured the complexity of the drugs problem on screen and he has produced and directed a film that is intelligent, poignant, dynamic, and that is the definitive film about drugs in years to come. Adapting Channel 4's award winning TV drama about drugs Traffik and transferring it to the big screen but Soderbergh has done a good job.
The film is set in 3 places Ohio, where a US Supreme Court Judge (Michael Douglas) has been newly appointed as a US goverment drugs czar, San Diego where two police officers(Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman) have to guard a corrupt businessman turned informant and a businessman's wife (Catherine Zeta Jones) has to deal with her world crumbling when her husband is arrested on drugs charges and Tijuana , Mexico where a police officer(Benicio Del Toro) is frustrated working in a police force where his superiors and colleagues are embroiled in the corruption of the drugs underworld.
The cinematography is impressive especially how the film moves between the three locations and the way the characters from the three stories are interlinked with other is well executed on screen. What I really like about Traffic is that you get an insight of all the different types of people whose lives have been blighted by drugs and that drugs is a worldwide problem that effects everyone irrespective of their ethnic origin, religion or socio-economic group.
The acting is first rate with good performances from everyone especially the double act of Don Cheadle & Luis Guzman, Benicio Del Toro in Oscar winning form as the 'man of honour,' stuck in an impossible situation and Michael Douglas as the drugs czar who discovers that drugs is not only a national and international problem but much closer to home than he realises. Traffic is a terrific film and a masterpiece from one of Hollywood's top directors. The former independent director has come of age in mainstream cinema.

Basically portraying the ‘drug problem’ in the states in a harrowing kind of fashion. Virtually the whole movie is shot with a ginger tinge to its colour and if that isn’t bearable there are plenty of subtitles too.

If this one were on TV, I would have changed channels after the first ten minutes. No such luck here. A good thing about the film (if there is one) is that it does show insight into Mexican culture. Sadly it also shows hardcore American Culture too (why do we love it?).

Not since ‘Midnight express’ though have I seen such an ‘unsavoury’ movie. It centres on the message that just about everyone is corrupt. It reminds us what real life is and what the real roles of drugs are in America and Mexico, (could it get as bad over here?).

There is no action. Even at the end of the film (I didn’t believe that it would ever end), you remain seated and perhaps thankful that you are in fact in the UK! Might be worth seeing if you are on drugs though, if only from an awareness point of view. No thanks!

Not even Catherine Zeta-Jones could sway me this time.

The film is good but the copy I bought was a fake and not of very good quality! I think the ebayer who I bought it from has since been struck off so that is one bonus to come out of this. The first time he sent me an empty box and then the next time it was a blatant copy although to be fair I did not pay too much for it and he did send a replacement disc after he first box had arrived empty!

I'm not a big fan of the 'shaky-cam reality at its grittiest' style that seems to get in the way and ruin a lot of good stories at the moment, but Traffic manages to use its visual style to enhance the movie rather than hinder it. Everyone is great in it, and it rewards with repeat viewings.

  Honest, dark, witty and well-written.
Review created: 24/02/09

This film is dark, frightening, upsetting, touching, honest and comical in just a few parts. It tells the story of drugs from first coming into America to how they get distributed and dealt, the effects they have on people and the consequences and people's reactions to them. It's very well written and has a stellar cast of great great actors.
At times you can lose track of what has happened if you take your eyes off the TV but this just goes to prove how indepth and gripping this film is.

Review created: 15/02/09

This movie is a real pleasure to watch . It won 4 oscars and 59 other awards .
Its written by Simon Moore and Stephen Gaghan .
Benicio Del Toro ( Che + Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas )and Michael Douglas ( Wall Street + Fatal Attraction ) star along with many other big names .
A conservative judge is appointed by the President to spearhead America's escalating war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is an addict.
The tagline for this movie is ' No one gets away clean ' and its running time is 147 minutes .
I would rate this 8 out of 10 .
Hope Ive been helpful . John

I remember watching this film when it first came out and i thought it was pretty good, know iv seen it again recently i didnt enjoy it as much. It is not one of those films that keeps you in your chair, and somewhat slow but engaging. I wouldnt recomend in seeing it again if you have already seen it once
