Toy Story (DVD 2000)

Ever wonder how toys apparently get from one place to another with no human help? Toy Story, Disney's first feature-length foray into computer animation, postulates that they do it all by themselves. Toys have their own magical world which comes to life any time the lights are out or people aren't around. Any who doubt this should take a look at Toy Story. You'll never again feel quite the same way about Mr. Potato Head, Monkeys in a Barrel, or Slinkies.

Of course, the visual aspect is the centerpiece of Toy Story. The computer-generated effects are a marvel. Rich in unexpected detail (the grain of a wood floor, fingerprints and chipped paint on a door, reflections in polished surfaces, and so on...), this colorful and brilliantly-rendered aspect of the film would alone be worth the price of admission. It's something of a bonus that the characters, dialogue, and story provide entertainment value of their own.

Toy Story is a buddy movie/adventure tale with an understated lesson about the value of friendship. Parents might also be able to use some of what transpires to encourage their offspring to put away toys after playtime. While the screenplay isn't a marvel of originality, it is capable of holding the attention - light, undemanding fun that never gets too immature or syrupy. There's also quite a bit of intelligent wit that will go above the heads of younger viewers - that stuff's for Mom and Dad.

The two main characters are toys: cowboy Woody (voice of Tom Hanks), the old-time favorite, and space ranger Buzz Lightyear (voice of Tim Allen), the battery-operated newcomer. The supporting cast includes a dinosaur (voice of Wallace Shawn), Mr. Potato Head (voice of Don Rickles), a piggy bank (voice of John Ratzenberger), a slinkie (voice of Jim Varney), Little Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts), and an army of tiny plastic soldiers who scout out the new arrivals on birthdays and Christmas. The humans who appear in Toy Story are intentionally rendered to look artificial. In this movie, people are "unreal"; all the vividness and multi-dimensionality is saved for the toys. But that's a typical convention of animation.

Toy Story opens with Buzz's arrival. Woody is upset that this high-tech neophyte has usurped his rightful place on the bedspread and in his six-year old owner's play time. The disgruntled cowboy comes up with a plan to eliminate Buzz, but it backfires, and soon the two rivals are out in the real world, forced to help each other in their struggle to escape the clutches of a toy-torturing juvenile delinquent.

How does Toy Story compare to Disney's more conventional animated features? They're really very different types of productions. This film is less artistic and more technologically impressive. Despite a few Randy Newman songs, it's not really a musical. Of course, the target audience is the same, and everything from Disney embraces "family values", but it's difficult - and unfair - to make an effective contrast of the two film making styles.

The one big negative about Toy Story involves Disney's overcommercialization. Already, Woody and Buzz dolls line store shelves. Burger King is coming out with figurines. It won't be long before the movie is drowned in hype. So, from the perspective of pure entertainment, it's a good idea to see Toy Story before the deluge of promotions becomes so excessive that it turns off every adult. Toy Story is without doubt a classic movie.
Revolutionary for the art of animated movies it was the first full length movie to be made using computer-aided animation techniques. It is absolutely flawless in every way. A fantastic storyline about life from toys' perspective and how their child owners are so important to them and how they secretly all want to be the 'favourite'.
This movie has been made beautifully, featuring star voices from Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, the animation is brilliant, lots of humour and a few touching moments.

Absoutle class for all the family to enjoy.

bought this for my kids, and them and me both loved it,great faimly movie.
a must have film for the family.its about a toy cowboy who name is woody,woody,s top spot in the heart of his young owner is in jeopardy,and soon is the lives of woody and buzz.accidentally whisked away from home and in the clutches of the neighbourhood bully,these two squabbling rivals must work together as a team if they are to escape.its just one of those films you can watch again and again

i really enjoy this film when it first came out and now i have children of my own i know that they will enjoy this film!! this if a very funny film!!

I Purchased this film for my 2 yr old son ,after he started to show an interest in animation films.
I know there have been many films since toy story was launched, but to me this still remains one of my favourites and is Timeless,my son by the way loves it as i had hoped!.
The characters the voices all briliant!!!
A wonderfull story, funny and a little sad at times but as always everything turns out good in the end as woody saves the day.
Higly recommended if you havnt seen it, or perhaps havnt watched it for a while dig it out or buy yourself a copy!

This film is mainly for the kids, I know a number of adults that didn't really enjoy it. There is good special effects and computer imagery(obviously its all computer based!!) You do end up feeling a little sorry for Woody, but this film does show how friendships can form. Overall its good but definately for kids.

My son had watched the second movie and loved it, we could not get a hold fo the first movie on DVD anywhere. Until I looked on Ebay !
The film is excellent, good all round fun for the family.

This is a fake I bought The Incredibles, Toy Story and Toy Story 2 from the same seller and 2 out of the three are fakes/copies I am disappointed as I bought them for my daughter in good faith thinking the were all genuine The only real dvd was the Incredibles so watch out for pirate dvds

I bought this item as a stocking filler ready for christmas, i enjoyed the original so much i have upgrdaed to dvd so that all my kids can enjoy this film.

i bought this dvd for my grandson who had seen it at his cousins house. He was absolutely amazed with woody and buzz, and ask me if he could have it as well. As it was a fairly old film I decided to look on e-bay, and I am so pleased that i did. Its brilliant, and he is over the moon

My 3 children were delighted when we recieved this DVD and watched it straight away, along with my wife and i, and of coarse the whole family loved it. both sound and picture were wonderful and so was the film.

First rate service produce in better condition than stated its birthday present for my first grandson I would hope all other e bay sellers are as good as you ....because this is my first time on E Bay

The story is about a group of toys who belong to a little boy called Andy. I love that all the toys have such strong personalities that are all really essential to the movie, and really there are two main characters who battle it out to be the leader and in the end become buddies.
The humour is wonderful and comedy timing is perfect, its tense and has all the qualities in a film to keep attention spans engaged
Its my 3 year old sons new favourite film, and my daughters who are slightly older 7 and 9 love it too.
I bought it on ebay because I couldn't find it in the shops or on any websites.

AND ADULTS SEEN IT ATLEAST 200 TIMES AND BOUGHT ANOTHER CUZ ITS BK OUT !........................................................................

I bought this for my son who loves the movie and is playing it constantly along with Toy Story 2 and with another son on the way in Jan 2010 will no doubt have lots more viewing.

Was a childhood film which brought enjoyment to the whole family, Now I'm older it still is enjoyable to watch.

as a family we love this film the carecters are really welly written and the kids learn a lovely lesson from this film. a really good film!!!!

wicked, fun kids film which adults can enjoy too. not much more to say :D having an upscaling DVD player and HD TV definitely improves the quality of this film too. quality buy, go for it! =D

I have been made to watch this filmm two dozen times by my three and a half year old daughter and it is still entertaining both of us.
