Album Notes Town And County: Ben Vida (acoustic guitar, cornet); Liz Payne (acoustic guitar, marimba, bass, percussion); Jim Dorling (bass clarinet, harmonium, celeste); Josh Abrams (celeste, bass).Recorded at Engine Music Studios, Chicago, Illinois. In the cool and crowded world that scribes insist upon referring to as "post-rock," the tropes are so well established that, as in electronica, it's often difficult for an artist to make a truly individual impact. Not so with the drummerless, all-acoustic quartet Town and Country. In quiet, chamber-like settings, the band's instrumental compositions (and they ARE compositions, not just doodles over a two-chord progression) carefully intertwine the worlds of folk, classical music, and the avant garde. The cascading repetitions of an acoustic guitar pattern on "I'm Appealing" wouldn't sound out of place in a Steve Reich or Philip Glass composition, while at other moments, the cornet and bass clarinet interjections echo lost Morton Feldman pieces. At the same time, there's a rooted, earthy quality to much of C'MON, suggesting that fans of John Fahey might find a place for themselves here. Despite all the aforementioned touchstones, it's important to remember that Town and Country's sound and vision are very much their own, and all the more inviting for it.
