Dustin Hoffman is magnificent in this tender and amusing comedy of gender differentials in eighties New York. Michael Dorsey (Hoffman) is a talented actor with a fearsome reputation for his attitude to inept directors. A chance situation coaching a hopeless pupil for a part in a popular, long-running soap opera leads to Dorsey dressing in drag and winning the part for himself and gaining immense popularity for his feisty interpretation! Whilst becoming more in tune with his female alter-ego he finds himself falling hoplessley in love with the beautiful leading lady (a wonderful performance from Jessica Lange)whose widowed father falls in love with Hoffman's character! Chaos ensues as Hoffman struggles to keep all parties happy and produces an Oscar winning performance in the process. His subtle interpretation of a man realising what understanding a woman's psyche entails and superb comic timing combines to make a hilarious and touching movie. There are great cameos too from Bill Murray as Hoffman's abstract, playwriting flatmate and the film's director, Sidney Pollack, as Hoffman's bemused agent. Altogether a timeless movie which improves with repeated viewing. Excellent stuff!

I've had this movie on video since it was first aired on TV. Since we now have DVDs this is one film that I had to replace.
An unusual role for Hoffman, who plays a struggling actor, landing a female role. Although Hoffman doesn't make a convincing woman as far as the viewer is concerned, his comic timing and sincere performance is brilliant, quickly tapping into the female perspective and finding himself in some very compromising situations.
Jessica Lange is the perfect co-star and looks stunning. As Julie Nichols, she lacks confidence, not having found Mr Right yet, she has allowed herself to be taken advantage of in the dating dept. Julie looks up to Dorothy's (Hoffman) strength of character, but when Michael falls for her in a big way, things get complicated, leaving Julie to assume that Dorothy is a lesbian! Further complications follow when Julie's father falls far Dorothy
Also, look out for Teri Garr, who turns in a simply excellent performance as Michael Dorsey's(alias Dorothy Michaels)blonde, kooky, close friend. Here's a lady who never landed the roles she deserved.
Altogether, this movie is a great deal of fun, which at the end of the day is what entertainment is all about.

Tootsie DVDOne of my all time favourites - Dustin Hoffman at his best. Hadn't seen the film for many years and when I spotted it, it was one I just had to get. Just as funny as I remeber it !!! Great Film !!!
