I've used GPS technology in various forms since 2000 and PDA-based navigation GPS since 2003. Yes, it is cheaper to have Navigator running on an iPAQ than to buy a TomTom unit, but the iPAQ version required a bulky mount and a fiddly power adaptor. The TomTom One has a delightfully simple mount, can run for serveral hours without external power and the power lead, when connected, runs neatly to one side.
But all this is brushed away by the sheer ease of use and quality of design and construction - the TomTom is a fantisically designed item with only one button - power on/off. Everything else is done via the touchscreen that boasts excellent clarity and brightness. TomTom say you can just switch on and GO - and it's true. You really can just switch it on and, even before it has worked out where it is, feed it a postal address - and you're done; it will take you right to the door.
People who've never connected thier TomTom to their PC have missed a further bonanza. Using the TomTom HOME application, you can not only backup the contents of your unit, but all the software and firmmware updates released by TomTom make themselves avalable to you for download and installation. You can buy extra maps, choose to have John Cleese give you directions, have speed camera locations... the possibilites are, like recycling, endless.
If you have a Bluetooth-capable phone then the ONE can use this to download travel information on the move and warn you accordingly of accidents and delays on your route - even tell you how long the delays are expected to be and offer to re-route accordingly. This feature is free for a month and then becomes a subscription service. Be aware though that the TomTom speed camera update service does have free or cheaper alternatives out there.
Do you want one of these? Of course you do. Do you need one of these? Very probably. Should you actually get one? Certainly!

TomTom One (v2) Great Britain - great piece of kit!
Review created: 09/06/07

I was in the market for a SatNav system, and had obviously heard of TomTom a while ago, but with all the new names in the market, i wanted to shop about a bit and do some research to find out which really was the best for me.

This is a salient point - that there are lots of great SatNavs out there, but some are more suited to your purposes than others. I mean why bother paying £250-£300 on a system with a load of features that you'll never ever use? Even if you can afford it, it's still pointless!

So, i don't drive abroad very often at all, so that's not worth having, and i have a few friends who have traffic info on their SatNavs and it's a waste of time by all accounts, so as long as i have the GB maps on the machine, and a decent screen, and the road traffic cameras on it, i'm happy. This left me with the choice between manufacturers - TomTom? Garmin? The other ones(?!) - My friends kindly allowed me to nick their satnavs for a couple of days so i could try them out and see which i liked. One friend was given a Garmin for nothing. "I still felt like I'd been ripped off" were his exact words... Not glowing praise indeed - and i must say useability-wise, it's not great, especially when you want to quickly access something on the move or in a quick pit-stop.

Basically, TomTom i found to be the one with the features i needed, at a good price, and easiest to use. The ability to download new things to it like voices (gotta love John Cleese) and the location of the nearest Burger King (eh?!) is good too...

All in all, i can whole-heartedly reccomend the TomTom One. It's a great piece of kit, and if you can get a brand new one through e-bay for much less than retail like I did, all the better!!!

  Buy ONE !

Entry level tomtom sat nav device that replaced the tomtom 300 and classic GO, this model is much slimmer than its predecessors, meaning you can slip it in your pocket for safe keeping. Easy to use even for the beginner, you can either type in town then road name (even the street number) on its 3.5 inch touchscreen, or the postcode and it will take you straight there. You can store your frequently visited places so you don't have to re-type the address each time. Very useful, especially if you have speed camera locations loaded on it (Might pay for itself in saved fines !)
There are many free websites where you can download POI's (Points of Interest) like swimming pools, congestion charge zones or a particular shop brand. (You may need a bigger SD card for large quantities, I recommend a 512Mb)
Beware, thieves love them, always take it out of the car with you, also remove the bracket from the window or they might break-in just to check it's not under the seat or in the glovebox.
I have the upgraded 510 but the tomtom one is just the same when it comes to directions and after all, that's what it's for. Bin your maps and get ONE !

Price at Comet UK (On-line) £179.99 (05-01-07)

You'll find a good used tomtom one on ebay for just over £150, good luck.

Good product ruined by appalling maps and poor customer

Good product ruined by appalling maps and poor customer service.

The tom tom one device is actually quite good but sadly it is let down by appalling maps and non existent customer service. Don’t buy it!!!

I bought the tom tom one last march. The map supplied with the device was woefully inaccurate. My first trip was up the A1 to the hamsterlee forest. The new section of the A1 was not in the map the cursor went across the fields and it continually prompted me to turn right and left onto the roads and tracks crossing the A1 on bridges. I was disappointed that the map was obsolete as the section of road had been open for many months; I was anticipating a free upgrade to the latest map, but no you had to purchase a new map if you wanted the latest map.

They supply obsolete maps and expect you to pay for the updates; this is simply not good enough!!

Eventually, I got fed up with having to turn the tom tom off on the A1 to stop the irritating prompt to turn onto roads crossing over the motorway on bridges. I bought the new map Great Britain and Ireland V6.6 although the map around this section of the A1 has been updated and no longer directs you up the old A1 at ferrybridge it is now not only inaccurate it is positively dangerous and SHOULD BE RECALLED FOR SAFETY REASONS.

The M62/A1 junction is inaccurate in the map. It prompts you to take the slip road in 800 yards as you pass the exit you need to take. Drivers (including my wife) are aggressively swerving to make the exit! IT IS MORE WHEN THIS DANGEROUSE MAP CAUSES AN ACCIDENT THAN IF!

The map is then just as inaccurate as the old one. The cursor goes grass tracking across the fields because the road is not accurately depicted in the map, as it did in the old map and continues to annoyingly prompt you to make turns onto roads on bridges and underpasses.

I contacted tom tom support! And asked for a refund as the map was as bad if not worse than the original! They told me that as I had activated the map (the only way I could discover that it was defective) that their policy was not to give refunds.

The only reason I have not issued court proceedings against tom tom is that contrary to UK law they do not publish their address for the service of documents.

The final analysis is that although the tom tom One is well made and functions well. Don’t buy is because of the appalling map and dismal customer service. If they cannot get the major trunk roads and motorways right; they should give up.

This is a great compact little sat nav system. It is very easy to use with a great menu system all accessed on the touch screen. The best way to get one is to buy the basic package then any extra's e.g. Voices, maps, traffic or speed camera's, can be purchased online through the tomtom website, (usually bundled together).

If your after a cheap and easy to use Sat Nav System then you can do no wrong with this one.

I had bought this unit for a friend but I had the opportunity to use this unit for 3 weeks while he was on holiday, after using this unit I was quite convinced in buying one my self, the ease of use and the sensitivity of the gps was awesome, at the moment I use the ipaq pda solution with a hardwired gps in my car, which is just as good but this is so much more easier and less mess solution that I would recommend to anyone who is a technophobe, the other thing I found good about the tomtom products is you can have the speed camera database loaded on to the unit, I just transferred my data base of my memory card to tomtom one unit and then setup the poi warnings and camera database was loaded and functional, I have also tried my brothers tomtom one v2 unit and the maps are slightly updated and the unit is slimmer but essentially its the same unit, voice guidance is loud and clear, battery life is pretty good and the portability makes this unit easy to carry with you. Overall quite I'm happy using this unit and hope to get one soon.

Tom Tom ONE GPS Sa Nav
Review created: 07/02/08
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

For years, I'd dispensed with the idea of owning a SAT NAV, always thinking of them as a little pretentious and just a lazy person's excuse for not bothering with learning how to properly read maps. Then I bought on of those new mobile phones with a built-in GPS and was hooked, until I discovered that each time you use it, the service provider cane you with on-line costs to connect to the satellite. After much dithering and many turns down blind dead-ends looking for a destination the other week, I backed down and found this little beauty on ebay , virtually brand new and for about £85.00 which is way below the £229.00 RRP. It couldn't be simpler to operate. Dial in an address, or a post code of the desired destination and 'voila!' "it speaks!". there's just one button (on and off), the rest is all done via the touch screen. A couple of hours of playing around with the preferences and display settings and it was like I'd had one all my life, just a joy to use. The windscreen mount is good (after a few attempts to make it stay on the window) - Tip - Clean window and the mount first! The power is picked up straight of the cigarette lighter, and it is literally, plug in and go. There's an expansion port for a memory card, and you can down-load new and up-dated maps via the tom tom web site. You can also link it into your blue tooth connection on your mobile and play around with calls and displays. It may be at the lower end of the tom tom range, but none the less, this is a really clever bit of kit. The only pain (and this is not unique to this Sat Nav), is that you need to un-dock the display and either carry it around with you when you've parked up, or find a suitable place in the car to store it out of the way of prying eyes and would-be sat-nav thieves. Marks out of 10... 9.5 (because it didn't come with a case!!). Happy Sat Naming!! Steven Clarke (Crawley, West Sussex).

I recently purchased this GPS system as id heard that it was basically a plug in and go device. Within minutes of unwrapping I had set the system up and was ready to go, i also went onto the website and downloaded further products without any problem, when using the Tomtom I have found that it is easy and accurate and it also has a sense of humour throwing in little quips now and again amongst the directions which although wouldnt be my main reason for purchase but is quite funny. I would gladly recommend this system to anyone looking for a GPS system.

Like:

Easy access to functions
Fast route plan (2 seconds)
Accurate (To within about 3 meters of your location)
Instant replanning if you take a wrong turning (Unlike another make I used which took ages)

Bad points:

You have to hold the on button down for a while to turn on sometimes (tried two, both the same)... once in a while they refuse to turn on at all and you have to reset them by pressing a pin into the reset hole.

Tomtom ONE GPS Receiver is user friendly. All one needs to do is to switch it on, and it will direct you on what to do next and in few seconds, you are on your way. That one need not spend so much time reading manuals makes tomtom one gps an ideal for everyone.
The slimness of the windscreen mount, makes it possible for one to mount it anywhere without fear of obstructing your views. I truly enjoy using Tomtom One GPS Receiver.

The tomtom one is one of the lower priced units on the market today but dont let this put you off it has some excellent and useful features over and above the usual navigation features. Individual buttons can be pressed to show you your nearest petrol station and cash point airport etc just to name a few. Entry of addresses is easy and includes full postal code entry to minimise entry details and navigate you to the door of your destination. The inbuilt speed camera location warning system works well (which i got as a special offer thrown in) User options are all there including male or female voice, use of which types of road, automatic screen brightness control working of the inbuilt clock or user setable, type of map and information display etc. The add on option of real time traffic updates via radio is a neat unit that fits the tomtom one well and should be helpful to avoid traffic jams.

The instruction manual is easy to use however the on screen menus are very intuitive and quickly allow you to set up your preferences or enter destinations. The tomtom one will work straight from the box. A 'non technical' friend had no problem in setting up and using the unit.

Any dislikes? Not really. Choice of road types and fast or most direct route options can lead to some slightly surprising choices of route although so far they have proved accurate and reliable. Detail goes down to unmetalled tracks from motorways. You can set the unit to not use the 'farm tracks' though the tomtom one can be set to at least alert you to the existance of the very small roads that would give you the most direct route. Fast routes will generally be limited to using at least A roads though the distance will usually be greater than the more general option.

The supplied unit comes with UK and Ireland maps already loaded. A wide range of other maps on SD cards are available from tomtom via there web site

Overall I rate the tomtom one an excellent satnav unit for a low cost compared with the competition.

Tomtom are probably the best known make of sat nav and it has so far proven to be a very good value for money buy.The buy it now option allowed me to purchase it at a price i liked without waiting about or risk of being out bid. While ensuring i would recieve it within a certain time frame. what prompted me to buy this sat nav is the seller had good feed back proving to be a valuable ebay member.

This system is really easy to use for beginners, I just plugged it in and away I went.
I have always found my destination with out any problems, I have set an alarm to let me know when I have exceed the speed limit Iam driving in, I have also got a warning alarm for when there us a GATSO ahead.
I have downloaded lots of POI's ( points of Interest ) and loads of free voices from the net.
The only downside is the battery life, I only get about 2/3 hours from fully charged to completely flat so don't forget your car charger.
On the whole a great product
