Top of the range Sat - Nav, reads text messages aloud !

This top of the range unit is much the same as the 710, with the addition of maps of almost everywhere in the world you are likely to drive a car (UK,Europe,USA and Canada) and the ability to play music on an in built 20GB MP3 player, control your ipod and store pictures, also it has a hard drive instead of an SD memory card.
The 4" widescreen means you can navigate with the touch of a finger and you can store frequently visited places so you don't have to type in a location every time. Watch the screen or listen to the spoken instructions on where to go, couldn't be easier ! You can even select different voices, but I guarantee you'll go back to Jane in the end.
For me a huge bonus is the hands-free mobile phone calling via bluetooth, the tomtom comes with a built in microphone but is best if you use the extension mic (also included). The hands free quality really is very good, most people wont be able to tell you're not holding the phone. The unit even takes a copy of all your mobile numbers out of your phone automatically so you can dial people directly from your tomtom without picking up your phone! It can even read your text messages aloud ! A remote control comes with the unit (But not with 510 or 710)
Another bonus is that it if you connect to your PC you can download all the UK speed camera locations, which could save you the price of the tomtom in speeding fines. Similarly railway stations, shopping centres etc, also you can load in grouped items like Tesco stores, congestion charge zones or BP petrol stations plus hundreds of others if you connect it to your PC every now and again. (Many free web-sites)
On the down side these are top of burglar Bill's Christmas list so never leave it in the car if you can help it, they might even see the window bracket or the mark it leaves on the window and break-in just to check the car for you. (Been there, done that!)
A sound investment if you do a lot of driving or can't find your way out of a paper bag, plus this unit saves you the price of a hands-free car kit for your phone. I could never go back to using maps again now, Get one you won't regret it !

Price at Comet (On-line) 18-01-2007, Tom Tom 910 - £349.92

  Tomtom Go 910 got lost

I won the TomTom Go but I never received it as the seller was engaged in deliberate fraud. E-Bay knew this as he had already defrauded one other person yet they still continued to allow him to sell until after my auction. I know the seller gained over £600 from us at least but he would not have done so if E-Bay had not be negligent in allowing him to contiue selling when they knew that he was a fraud. As for compensation of course E-Bay have sloping teflon shoulders and don't want to know.

Tom Tom Go 910 GPS Receiver Great bit of kit

Had a Navman ICN 510 which was good. But realised I needed a system that would sing and dance, so purchased the Tom Tom .

Pro's
Excellent size screen and easy to use the Tom Tom 910 is all thing to all Men/Women it will play music or audio books manage your telephone calls linked by bluetooth, manage your text messages by first notifying and then reading them back to you.The POI database is good for finding attractions in the locality. The system also automatically switchs over to night screen as light dims. it can be set up for left or right handers . You can also make the unit less atractive for Billy the burgular by imputting the security lock code which only you would know. I have saved hours by using this system . The Tom Tom also has assisted navigation so when you have to go through long tunnels although it does lose signal it will continue to navigate you until it recovers one, the signal pick up is immediate . Some systems also lose or cannot find a GPS in densely wooded areas so far this is not the case for Tom Tom. I haven't loaded any tunes or pictures on to it as I use the car stereo but I am sure that Tom Tom would replay equally as good.

Cons.
At present I haven't found any but I will inform you as or if I do.

I hope you have found this review helpful . It is was a huge outlay but worth every penny so far

brilliant piece of kit - big Tom Tom failings

The 910 does exactly what it says on the box. The maps are excellent but seem to ignore Mini roundabouts. Used mine in Spain, it knows all the spanish street names and delivers them in English, if that is what you require. Seems to be "intelligent", if you go off the programmed route it will recalculate to your destination if possible, otherwise you get the dreaded "turn around when possible" voice of doom. Heavier and bulkier than non hard drive versions but if you want to stay with SD cards then you won't buy the 910! There were problems with earlier windscreen mounts but I have not experienced any and think they have been overcome.

My big beef about the 910 is that you need to connect to a pc and internet to do various routine updates or download music tracks ( so much space it ain't funny), there is no option because the 910 does not take an SD card. When you do connect the unit WILL freeze & be useless until you contact Tom Tom Support & they say "Oh, yes this is a common problem, we don't know what causes it , but this procedure will fix it." And it does, until you connect to your PC the next time. The First thing you must do when you connect to your PC is MAKE A BACKUP. That will be the easiest way to recover from the freeze. You will still have to ring support because the reboot procedure is not straightforward and is not detailed in the manual. At Least not in my version. I have used handheld GPS for walking in the countryside and think GPS is the bees knees, the 910 far exceeds the capabilities of my handheld. You CAN navigate city streets on foot using the 910. Buy it and grin and bear the freezing, you won't be sorry

The product description clearly states "UK" version and "Can be used throughout the world,,,comes with multi mains adaptors.
Supposed to be located in Birmingham England but as the item DOES NOT have a UK mains adaptor and all correspondence relates to the United States and they still have not produced an adaptor, I would suggest that this is a perfect case of BUYER BEWARE

  First time satnav users
Review created: 04/12/07
by:
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My wife travels a lot of miles, 7 days a week usually, as a psychotherapist. We are both in our 50's and not much au fait, or even bothered, with much modern tech stuff. We were talking one evening as I had just finished printing a load of road maps for her next days venues. In the same conversation we mentioned the possible uses of satnav and decided to find out more. We both spoke with existing users and read considerable amounts on the W. A few days later we talked about this again and decided it was a good idea, also that tomtom was the way to go. Most of the folk we had spoken with use tomtom and value them highly. Of course that is no recommendation, so we read a lot and made comparisons. The choices are bewildering! As are so many things these days.
We decided to go for tomtom and then waded through the various gadgets available and decided not to go for the latest, top-of-range, offering. This, after all, was a 1st time purchase. So we checked out the high street shops and had a look on ebay. Eventually (gasp) purchased a tomtom go 910 on ebay. Not top of the range but fairly close and well priced. Transaction was faultless and the item item arrived in a couple of days. We took it out of the box and it was ready to go, had a play. Wife drove herself around the house, was told to 'turn back' and then put it back in the box. Impressive but complicated. A week later I told swmbo to use it or lose it and she used it to go to a few already known venues without any problem. She is now gaining confidence in it and has made a few journeys relying on tomtom only. These have all been good and one was excellent when she was taken on an unknown route which avoided congestion. We have some minor issues with build quality but none very serious. The theft aspect is somewhat worrying but that is the age we live in. The bluetooth connectivity is a boon. Wife may now learn how to use her mobile and perhaps even answer it.
Summary: 1st timers. Very pleased with it. As we gain more knowledge we will compare this against current offerings but for now it's doing exactly what it says on the box and doing it well. With our little experience I would say this is a good, useful and reliable gadget. I would recommend the machine for its usefulness but would urge potential buyers to spend some time on investigation beforehand.
Sorry for being so long-winded, this is my 1st review.

  Tomtom GO 910 GPS

I have had no previous experience with in-car GPS so can make no comparison, however I have been amazed at the accuracy of this model. I am particularly impressed by the way the visual and verbal instructions adapt, when you choose a different route to the most direct, that may not be the most practical. Further more I have fallen in love with Kate's voice. She could lead me anywhere,

when my aunty bought a tomtom 910 from ebay she paid £158 + 10 postage recieved the item next day, i had opened the item i saw a label saying tomtom road approval fully tested and reay to be used, and it says refurbished unit wasnt hoping that but until we had seen the charger it was an usa import seller had never mentioned about and it looked worn around the top of the tomtom logo area, charged it for hours then switched on, light came on then the unit froze was a total nightmare, spent hours and hours on the net searching if this was a well known problem for the tomtom 910 and it turned out to be correct, so i had to reset it update it with new things etc finally tomtom was working!:) i had contacted the seller as well no replie he was a powerseller with over 100000 feedback well all i can say if the prices looks to cheap then others then your in for doubt! make sure you read the description properly as most of us get feedup of reading the description as we know what we are buying and the info is mainly copied and pasted from links and websites!

  Tomtom GO 910 GPS Reciever
Review created: 13/08/08
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The remote feature is good no touching the screen with large fingers and getting the wrong feature. Long Battery life before recharge, good size display. Unfortunately the maps are only 2006 and the trial offers enclosed with the unit were not valid. An update with a 30% discount would be an additional £79.99. The feature to play songs over your car stereo is an option which requires another FM base not supplied. I decided to purchase this unit as I have heard how much better Tomtom than all the other GPS systems, not so! good! but other systems like Navman have some better offline features for planning. The display however is very good and using the 3D display gives clear illustrated manoeuvre display, excellent instruction (Road number, in direction of, the next manoeuvre all fed as additional information as you progress.

Nice unit!

This item was factory refurbished and came with 12 months warranty.
The seller e-mailed to say payment had been received and gave a link to their own tracking page. This never worked.
The seller says they will leave positive feedback when payment received. This didn't happen either.
The seller's courier did keep me informed once the item was en route. This was useful.
The item was in excellent condition and although the 910 is not the latest sat-nav, it is very functional and I like it a lot. The gift case was of genuine made in China PVC and I am sure I'll find a use for it somewhere.
Installing on my PC was easy with the included CD and there were numerous upgrades available.
The price at £150 was not a giveaway but was reasonable. I didn't feel cheated but didn't think I had made the sale of the century either.
Overall a good and fair deal and on my own experience would recommend the item and seller. I would suggest that if you could get the item for £130 all in you would have avery good bargain.

Not what was pictured in sales advert.

I purchased this GPS system by reading what was said in the sales discription. On receipt of the unit it was found to be a refurbish unit which was 2 years out of date and any free downloads to bring the maps up to date had since long gone. The unit crash many times so e-mails were sent to the company it was bought from with no response from them. TomTom were contacted they were not interested because the unit had been refurbished by others. The unit was shown in the advert as being able to be carried in your top pocket this was misleading as the unit was a different model. To update maps has been very costly where as a new unit has free updates for a period of time.Yes I could have sent it back if I had a address to send it back to so be aware of who you deal with. When the unit works it is brilliant.

few initial problems and loose windscreen mount
Review created: 19/04/08
by:
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After my old basic garmin got dropped on the floor, I thought i would upgrade to something with a few more features. When I received the item I set it all up, connected it to my pc and upgraded to the latest software version. When I took it out on a drive, the problems started.

Firstly it was very slow loading, and every now and again the tomtom would crash. When it loaded up again it had forgotten all my settings and loaded up the american map. So I went into the settings and changed the map to the european one, whereupon the tomtom promptly crashed again. This would happen every 5 minutes or so which, as you can imagine, became very infurating. It also started to display the message "unable to store map settings. File access error". I ended up using a traditional map to find my destination.

After a bit of searching on the internet I managed to find a solution. Apparently the tomtom's flash memory was full and the problem could be resolved by downloading the simple Clear Flash Memory tool from the tomtom website. Followed all the instructions and hey presto, tomtom is now working brilliantly!

Only to find that the windscreen mount is inadequate. The suction pad itself is great, sticks to the window no problem and there's no danger of it falling off, but the actual ball joint which allows the tomtom to be twisted to the correct angle isn't strong enough. With all the vibrations and undulations of the car travelling, even at low speeds, the tomtom begins to droop and, after a few minutes, it has dropped so far the it's resting on the dashboard, pointing downwards. Temporary solution to this is to mount it lower down on the windscreen so that it rests on the dash at the correct viewing angle, I couldn't find a screw or anything that would enable me to tighten up the ball joint. I have reported the problem to tomtom via the website customer services and hopefully they will be able to replace the windscreen mount, though I'm still awaiting a reply.

It is slightly more complicated to use than my old garmin and the mapping not quite as clear, but this is probably down to the fact it is so packed with features. Haven't tried it abroad yet but the UK mapping is great. It bleeps a warning to let you know when you're approaching a speed camera (the fixed position GATSO's) which is useful, but it also has an annoying bleep when you go over the speed limit, though this can be turned off. Bluetooth connectivity is great and I can now use my phone hands free. Only problem is I don't find the speaker on the unit quite loud enough, and I'm only 22, even when the volume is at max. It is possible to wire the satnav into the car speakers though. Haven't had the chance to use the mp3 function yet so can't comment on that and I haven't used the traffic alert system. I don't fancy subscribing through my phone data connection although you can buy a seperate antanae(yet more wires) that allows access to the traffic for a one off price of about 40 quid.

Lastly one feature I enjoy is the extra voices that you can get. At the minute I have ozzy osborne swearing at me to turn right( download for free here from isohunt) which is quite funny. I've only had the tomtom for 2 days now and there are still loads of features I haven't tried. I have noticed a dead pixel but it's very inconspicuous so not to bothered

Overall though I am very happy with the satnav system
