From book to film, "Timeline", a success?

I had read this book, by Michael Crichton, before seeing the film after it was loaned to me. I recalled that a film had been made so I found it on ebay and won it. I was really looking forward to watching it, being a fan of Crichtons[loving "er" and "The 13th Warrior" whose book I've also read.] I liked this book very much as it combined history with sci-fi, 2 of my favourite things.
So did the film live up to my expectations? Almost I'd say. The cast were good and pretty much portrayed the characters as I'd imagined. I was a little disappointed with some story changes which I guess are often necessary. I felt it missed things though. I can't say more without spoiling it.
The historical accuracy was sound and realistic. The action was great, the music evocative. Overall, I enjoyed it. I'd recommend it to fans of Crichtons, historical and or sci-fi type films. Suggestion though, if you haven't read it already, see the film before you read the book!

  Great Movie, but missing something...
Review created: 18/11/06

Story: The archaeological excavation at La Roque Castle in Castelgard, France, appears to be like any other dig. At least it does until archaeology student Kate (Frances O'Connor) and assistant professor Andre Marek (Gerard Butler) discover a note from their boss Professor Edward Johnston (Billy Connolly) dated 1357, but the chamber has been sealed since the mid-14th century. Knowing that Johnston is visiting the dig's main funder, cutting-edge computer company ITC, Kate and Marek head for corporate headquarters along with Johnston's son Chris (Paul Walker), and team members Stern (Ethan Embry) and Francois (Rossif Sutherland). To their astonishment, the team finds that ITC inadvertently discovered a wormhole leading to Castelgard circa 1357, that they have the ability to transport 3D objects through the hole, and that Johnston is trapped there with the team being his only hope for rescue. But is ITC telling them the whole truth

Comments: Great Movie, but missing something...

I enjoy stories where the subject is time travel. In this movie what lacks most is that some significant history change has been made or some technology from present day being introduced to ancient times.

When your watching this movie, you get more a feeling as if your watching some '' Robin Hood '' movie then a time-travel movie.

The movie is good & all, and it has been in my collection ever since it came out, and i watch it like every month or so, but every time after movie is over, i still have the feeling that something was missing in movie.

Great actor performances, great special effects, great historical accuracy, a must have movie for any kind off history lover.

Not one i had heard of till i did an ebay search of Gerard Butler. Don't think it did well at the cinema. Worth a watch, good Sunday afternoon material. Quite a good cast Billy Connolly, Gerard Butler, David Thewlis. Watched it twice since buying it.

An intelligent and powerful roller-coaster Sci-Fi thriller that tells the twisting tale of an experiment in time travel back to the 14th century. The film is fast paced without being frantic and holds the attention from start to finish. An excellent cast take their roles well and are believable in their characterisation. All in all a great evenings entertainment. Much to my surprise the sort of film to keep and see again.

  Timeline DVD

I bought the Timeline DVD after having read the novel version. The novel is in much more depth than the film as it always seems to be with books which become films. If you have read the book and enjoyed it I would not recommend the film. .....However the Film itself is an action packed fast moving film with plenty of good moments!! It is interesting to see a younger Gerard Butler before he went on to play roles in 300, and p.s. I love you. From the very start the film moves at break neck speed as the story unravels. It is well worth the watch if you haven't already read the book. Enjoy!

if you liked the book then im afraid you wont like the film version, altho the stoty line is similar, large bits of the book are missing and things move along far to fast and are not explained propperly.

Good premise for a story. Based loosely on the Michael Crichton Novel of the same name. the movie suspends some of the plot for action but all in all a worthwhile way to spend nearly 2 hours, much like most of the adaptations of Michael Crichton's work. If you like Jurassic Park, Westworld etc, then you will probably like this too.

This is one of my favourite films of all time.
I'd already tried High Street shops with no success. It was then suggested by my son that I browse Ebay to actually buy a copy and hey presto, there it was.
I can't thank the sellers enough for putting their items up for sale.

I've just had some luck with a CD that I had lost and again I was lucky enough to find it and win it

Thank you all

Fantastic film. Very close to the book, which is why I wanted to see it.
Having been to the Dordogne region, it was lovely to see it on the screen.

This film is fantastic. I wasn't sure when I got it, but it proved to be really good, with the added bonus of having Gerard Butler in it.Also Billy Conally actually being serious, when he does he is a fine actor. Its a bit like time cop but they go all oldie worldy. I thought it was great and would recomend it to anyone

  Almost but not quite

Good film ,had Billy Connelly in it although he didn't seem to act much, all the characters from the book were in it, Although they left the Glass screen problems out. Also a scene from the book where Kate was using her skills as a rock climber to escape the clutches of the English was completely left out.The Tunnel to Castle La-Roche was very short and didn't have any water or stalactites in it .
However It was good romp and a fair attempt at Micheal Critons book .
Go on get a copy and read it ,you'll enjoy it .

  Enjoyable time-travel adventure
Review created: 19/03/08

An adventure romp. Billy Connolly sacrifices his dignity to convincingly play a half-wit professor, and it is fun to count how often the other characters marooned in 14th Century France say "Let's go", "Are you all right" and "Be careful". Great battle scenes and a clever plot idea based on Michael Crichton's book.

The idea for this film was very good and I love The Goonies, but this just didn't gel quite as well as it could have under Richard Donners directorship. It's fast paced, the storyline is good and it's all action. Watchable but it just didn't quite make it to excellent for me.

  Dreadful
Review created: 24/01/07

Dreadful film. I enjoyed the book, but the film was cringeworthy. It mashed the storyline, it reduced the women characters to screaming idiots, the historical detail was elbow-tinglingly inaccurate and the music was too loud. If I owned it, I'd burn it.
