Best version of this classic by far!
Review created: 03/10/06

Before I saw this movie I though it was going to be just another lame re-make of an old classic as I loved the 1960's film version, but once I'd seen this it just wiped the floor with that old film; some of the scenes and sequences are just mind-blowing, that two second glimpse of the moon is one of the most awe-inspiring special effects I ever saw. This adds a lot to The Time Machine while remaining true to the story, and the numerous special features on offer rank this DVD up there with the best of them.

I liked this. Although it is known to be a flop, I was pleasantly surprised. Great special effects and a good storyline. The creatures are good and there is enouigh speed in the movie to keep it entertaining. Much better than flops like Waterworld or Cuthroat Island. I liked this one

Story: This adaptation of the classic sci-fi adventure tale by H.G. Wells, directed by Simon Wells (the great-grandson of the author), stars Guy Pearce as Alex Hartdegen, an absent-minded New York professor preoccupied with what passes for technology at the turn of the 20th century. However, the one thing that can distract him from his calculations is his love for Emma (Sienna Guillory), his bride-to-be. When tragedy strikes and he loses Emma, Alex uses the time-travelling machine that he's built in secret to change the present by going into the past. When that fails to alter fate, he leaps forward in time, eventually landing 800,000 years in the future, an era where humanity has splintered into two races--the docile Eloi and the ferocious Morlocks. There Alex befriends two of the Eloi (Samantha and Omero Mumba) and attempts to help them resist almost certain death at the hands of the Morlocks.
Like Pearce's character, this version of the novel is fascinated with technology and uses a daunting array of special effects. The fast-paced film was apparently not made without incident--Wells reportedly had a nervous breakdown during the shoot and was temporarily replaced by director Gore Verbinski (THE MEXICAN) for some scenes. Regardless of production difficulties, THE TIME MACHINE is an engaging spectacle that's anchored by Pearce and enhanced by the commanding appearance of Jeremy Irons.

Comments: Great Adaption, Great Story, Great Special-Effects. A++

Every time i watch this movie ( about once a month or so ) i still enjoy it enormously.

Very well acted, great special effects, great story.

Unfortunately they didn't stay true to the classic 1960's ''Time Machine'', but this version is great as well.

The part where the moon got destroyed was quite unique, i haven't seen a movie where that story was told before.

The Morlocks did look better in my opinion in the old classic one. These ones you can hardly tell that they are offspring from humans.

What puzzles me still is how a language can be sustained after 800,000 years.

This is a MUST-HAVE for your collection. For any SCI-FI fan.

I liked the special effects, but the morlocks did not convince me,it looked like a suit at times ,and they extended the height with a stupid looking head.
apart from that a good first time film to watch, the changes in the scenery was worth watching when travelling through time,Jeremy Irons as the Uber Morlock the makeup was really good,on the whole an above average film.

I was curious to see how good Samantha Mumba's acting would be. As expected she was a little wooden but played the part quite well.

It is similar to The Mummy and there are some good effects but the story seems like it is going nowhere and is nowhere near as gripping as the aforementioned film. That said if you can buy it for a good price it is worth a look.

my most favourite film ever was the original `the time machine` this version is nowhere near as good as the original, but having said that it is watchable, i bought it because i liked the original and wanted and hoped this version would either match up or surpass it , but alas it failed, although some of the special effects were good, and the creatures in the future part were well designed. the story line was mostly the same but some parts were different. altogether though it is worth a viewing.

Good special effects and clever intro beats the old version. The morlocks are a bit unreal however Jeremy Irons gives a sinister performance as their mind bending leader. Worth a viewing.

Like the parsons egg - it is good in parts! The special effects are impressive, but the story line goes off the boil occassionally.

I bought this after having read the book and was curious to see how it was altered in light of a movie. The story is only loosely in line with the book but is nevertheless an enjoyable easy watch film
Samantha mumba raises the eye candy profile and the use of CGI make it more polished than the 1960 original but for me, the original was the better story

  The Time Machine 2002

H.G. Wells The Time Machine was a landmark for science fiction. George Pal’s 1960 movie version was a landmark in science fiction filmmaking.

This Time Machine stars the recently prolific Guy Pearce as Alexander Hartdegen, turn of the 20th century professor, and genius inventor. When his life is struck with tragedy, Hartdegen builds a time machine, and uses it to travel to the future to discover a way to change the past. When he arrives, 800,000 years forward, he finds civilization in shambles.

Simon Wells grandpa had something important to say in his stunning tale of a man lost in time. H.G. Wells created a masterwork of science fiction and literary achievement. Simon Wells created a piece of box-office fodder.

I can’t call it light, fluffy, movie-going fun, that’s giving it way to much credit. Even the most mindless bit of entertainment ought to make SOME effort to cover up its most obvious plot holes. Simon Wells’ Time Machine doesn’t even bother.

Yet Alex meanders on through his journey, driven by the pain he feels over the loss of his beloved fiancé’,8,000 centuries into the future. Fortunately, though everyone else around him speaks a strange futuristic tongue, said hot native girl (Samantha Mumba) speaks English, having learned it by reading carved stone inscriptions from ancient New York.

But never fear, Alex sets to work saving the apparently hot native girl and her people, the Eloi, from attack by evil underground monsters, the Morlocks. In the future, Jeremy Irons has become the Morlock king,

At least the machine itself is quite well constructed. Of course, the very idea behind a steam powered time machine is a bit absurd to begin with, but it’s certainly fun to look at, though everyone else in the film seemed to wander around lost, thankfully Guy Pearce had the good sense to stand tall and bring a little life to his scenes. True, we never really get a good handle on his character, but what life there is in Alexander, Pearce fills out admirably.

In a line ....its more about the special effects than the original story.

  Enjoyable Romp Through Time
Review created: 06/06/08

I enjoyed The Time Machine and its focus on simplicity and special effect instead of heavy time travel contradictions and fancy plots. This movie was straight backwards and forwards dealing with materialism and love - straight and simple. This was a feel good movie in a time (our time) of confusion, fear, and war. Too many critics looked for something really deep, tried to tear it apart because of its apparent lack of scientific continuity. But really the essence of this movie was human relationships and I thought the movie it made its point even though it took 800,000 years to do it. I felt with the characters. The only real problem I had was how a language could be kept so pure after so many years - of course they may have had help from a local library.

The Time Machine (DVD) Jeremy Irons

I'm a closet, apprentice sci fi nut. I wanted to see this film when it came out at the pictures. Unfortunately, I missed it. I like the premise of the story line and was touched by the subtle moral overtonertone.

Jeremy Irons gave a stunning performance, which was one of the reasons I bought this film. Even little Samantha Mumba was good in this film. Proving that her acting is far better then her singing. More films, less singing please Miss Mumba.

Overall, I really liked this film, am glad I purchased it and look forward to future viewing.

This was actually my boyfriends purchase, we had bothed watched the movie when it had first come out. This is a story of a professor in vicotian times who believes time travel is real, his fiance dies and he works for years to create a machine, he does and goes back in time only to have her die a more horrible way, he goes 800,000 years into the future and is trapped in a time of people living on the edge of a cliff with monsters who take them underground, a good story line helped by good actors and actresses, not a film for serious filmers but a good easy watch and worth saying you've seen. this film runs for 92 minutes and stars Guy Pearce, Samantha Mumba and Jeremy Irons, as a PG dont expect too much horror or gore but not one for inder 13's. This story was based on the novel by H.G wells, i couldt really fault this film but i think he would be alittle more shocked to actually be 800,000 years in the futrure, he just seems to take it lightly and he's excepted and liked straight away. The extras include 2 commentries with film creators and stars the 1960 version, hunt sequence animatic, behind the scenes creating the morlocks and the time machine, deleted scenes, 'how to' visual affects, design gallery. stunt choreography sequence, interactive menus, scene access and finally trailers. All together a great film and a worth while watch.

The story has been familiar to me for year and year. Saw the original film at the cinema and really enjoyed it, so wanted to own a copy to watch whenever.

It has plenty of action, suspense, drama and the filmography is brilliant as are all of the actors.#

Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys an action, without modern warfare, film
