I bought this as I'd never seen this version, but am a huge fan of the re-make with Pierce Brosnan and Renee wots-her-name. The films are so different, whilst telling the same story, that they defy comparison. The music is sharper and the pace of the film quicker in the Brosnan version, but the way the two actresses played the female lead were the most startling contrast for me. Dunaway played the role as quirky and fun loving, only becoming sensuous and deep as her relationship grew more intense, the opposite of the modern version, where the work of the heroine is a serious matter, and it is only as the relationship with Thomas Crown commences, that we see the female lead toying with him like a cat with a mouse, and we see her mischeivious side emerging.

Thomas Crown was far more 'hands on' in the modern heist, the original version still suffering slightly from the influence of French 'naval gazing' cinematography of the late 60s. This was not helped by the often confusing use of split screen scenes. I am glad that the re-make did not attempt to include the 'chess' scene, as McQueen and Dunaway injected humour into seduction so successfully, I don't think it could have been recreated. The blatant battle of who was seducing who with Brosnan was totally in keeping with the quicker tempo and racier music of the later piece.

Buy both films, as they are both thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining and intrigueing, rather like an episode of Murder She Wrote, but with sophistication, and the only cheese being most definately tongue in cheek!

P.S., Please excuse my spelling!

Strangely enough I preffered the remake

To be honest this feels ever so slightly dated. Steve Mcqueens performance performance although slightly self indulgent (Beach buggy driving?!) is very good, excelling with that amazing charm and those facial expressions that light up the screen. The stand out performance however is from Faye Dunaway; the insurance investigator sent to reclaim the money. She's sassy humerous and a joy to watch.

A few stand out scenes (chess scene is amazing) make the film an enjoyable watch, but having seen the remake before this, the climax just doesn't fill the expectations made during the film.

Well worth a watch but i'd try the remake.

Must see Steve McQueen film, cat and mouse thriller.

I love the cool , cunning of Thomas Crown played by Steve McQueen who does not let up the guise of playing a criminal mastermind who does not need the money but only the thrill and adrenlin of not getting caught. His adversary is Vicky Anderson played by Faye Dunaway ( very sexy ), Faye plays a insurance investigator who always gets her man , or will she ! This is a must see movie with a different style of directing using split screen images which is key to the movie and you will understand why when you see it. The thriller was written by Alan R. Trustman and directed by Norman Jewison ( In The Heat Of The Night and Moonstruck ). As I said this is a must see thriller with good comedy moments.

This is the original film with Steve Mcqueen and Faye Dunnaway - the action and suspense is very well portrayed - the attraction between the two characters is well done - in a subtle and believable way - the story coming first leaving you guessing until the end!! The remake with Pierce Brosnan is very good - if a little over the top in the sex department - each to his own!! this one I am glad to have - also being a great fan of Steve McQueen helps!!

I bought this because I love the latest version with Pierce Brosnan and have always been a fan of Steve McQueen. Its a great film but on balance I still prefer the later version.
