Thomas Crown Affair (McQueen)

I bought this as I'd never seen this version, but am a huge fan of the re-make with Pierce Brosnan and Renee wots-her-name. The films are so different, whilst telling the same story, that they defy comparison. The music is sharper and the pace of the film quicker in the Brosnan version, but the way the two actresses played the female lead were the most startling contrast for me. Dunaway played the role as quirky and fun loving, only becoming sensuous and deep as her relationship grew more intense, the opposite of the modern version, where the work of the heroine is a serious matter, and it is only as the relationship with Thomas Crown commences, that we see the female lead toying with him like a cat with a mouse, and we see her mischeivious side emerging.
Thomas Crown was far more 'hands on' in the modern heist, the original version still suffering slightly from the influence of French 'naval gazing' cinematography of the late 60s. This was not helped by the often confusing use of split screen scenes. I am glad that the re-make did not attempt to include the 'chess' scene, as McQueen and Dunaway injected humour into seduction so successfully, I don't think it could have been recreated. The blatant battle of who was seducing who with Brosnan was totally in keeping with the quicker tempo and racier music of the later piece.
Buy both films, as they are both thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining and intrigueing, rather like an episode of Murder She Wrote, but with sophistication, and the only cheese being most definately tongue in cheek!
P.S., Please excuse my spelling!
