Gut-Wrenchingly Surreal Portrayal Of Youth Going Wrong, 3 Feb 2006
Reviewer: Chris C "manxdude87" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

I do not often get the sense of nervousness when watching a movie, after all it is not real, but for example The Shining, it delivers these shivers down the viewers's spines because there is a sense of real life, as if that could and might have happened in reality.
Thirteen is one of those movies I never expected to be generally frightening but also gripping in a sense. I can honestly say that this is not a chick flick, it may have an all-star female cast but nothing could be further from the truth. Co-written by Nikki Reed and Catherine O'Hicke, Thirteen is a surreal tale of adolescence told through the changing life of Tracy Freeland.

This is every parent's nightmare situation, with Tracy getting involved with all kinds of bad things that no thirteen year old should go near. It generally is a sad movie, there is nothing happy or cheering about it, but it has to be watched nonetheless.

The acting on here is really good, particularly from Holly Hunter as Tracy's mother. Evan Rachel Wood is very unknown but she clearly stands out as Tracy.

This movie does deserve to be watched by everyone. If it does not raise a smile, then it will sure as hell make you think about life a lot differently.

  Best film ever made?
Review created: 05/12/07

Was attracted to this film by the front cover, even though that sounds shallow. However when i watched it i have to say it was the best film i have ever seen (and i have seen a few!).Tracy is an innocent thirteen year old student at high school making great progress with her studies. However she gets in with the wrong crowd and be-friends the coolest girl in school.Together their double act throws them into a world of drugs, sex and crime.Tracy's mom finds it very hard to cope with her daughter and tries her very best to rescue her from the world she only knows too well.An absolute treasure of a film which i thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. The soudtrack includes songs by Katy Rose who i have previously reviewed.
If i could give this film 11/10 i would.

I decided to buy this DVD as i'd previously watched it when borrowed.
Because it's a heart felt, slightly disturbing but very home-truth this movie struck me as a must see, must buy DVD.
When a teenager wants to fit in and starts taking desperate measures to do so it all goes pear shaped. And it's not a chick-flick, if anything, far from it.
Although the movie is based on one girl, the whole part about trying drugs, stealing, getting her tongue pierced just to be popular, or be with someone who is popular is something we can all relate to.
Even if we haven't done so. It's just one of those movies that makes you want to cry and really feel for the character.
The camera work does get a little annoying at times but when it's needed for weird moments during the screenplay (you'll see what i mean) it is very effective.
All in all it is a must see movie. And it is however rated 18. But it's really worth while watching.
Very heart felt, very much directed to any audience. If you look past some shabby parts and keep in tone with the storyline, you can see exactly why it's such a good movie.

I thought this was a really good dvd. It highlights the pressure that a lot of teenagers are under to fit in with the crowd. Having a teenage daughter myself it made me realise that actually she isn't that bad after all! Well worth buying I would say.

This DVD provides alot of extras including actors commentary which runs through the whole film, good for if you're interested in the acting, rather than directing/filming. Although the scenes which were edited out originaly, shown to you in the extras, are rather random and not helpful.

Very good film, the caption says it all really 'It deserves to be seen by everyone' and it really does. The film is a teen movie yet with a serious and slightly more realistic storyline, of course being a film the story is somewhat exaggerated but the fact that it is loosely based upon co-writer Nikki Reed's (who also plays Evie in the film) experiences as a 13 year old makes this film much more interesting. It sees 13 year old Tracy (played by Evan Rachel Wood) an A star student in school go from an innocent young girl through to a drug fueled slut all through befriending Evie the troubled teenager and most popular girl at school. The plot takes upon a stereotypical, yet still big issue at school of always wanting to be more popular than you are and puts a modern twist onto it with drugs, underage sex & petty crime, the fact that the film was low budget and was filmed using a handheld camera does not take away it's effect upon the viewer and instead makes you feel like you are actually there witnessing Tracy's downfall. Unlike most films in this genre it does not all work out at the end and Tracy ends up failing the 7th grade, losing her true friends, Evie and her popularity. Although the film is of a depressive nature it's one of those films you will pick up and watch again and again. I strongly recommend that parents of teenagers watch this film as although i mentioned earlier that it is somewhat exaggerated, it will show them the true issues that their son or daughter are currently facing, some of which they may not realise. Overall it is an excellent film that even if you don't think you will like, derserves to be seen at least once by everyone.

Although it is a bit more extreme then usual teenage life, it does highlight many of the issues. Is a gripping watch and the viewer feels really involved. The actresses give brilliant performances.

I bought this item for my sister as she saw it once and always wanted it. It was the first time I'd seen it and thought it was great! Very touching at times, and can see for some teenagers it will relate to them. I think it was great that in this film it showed some of the consequences.
