This has to be my favourite Who album ever, probably my favourite album ever, full stop. It contains a very good selection from their songs, right through from I Can't Explain, the first Townshend composition to hit the world, right through Tommy and Quadrophenia, their two Rock Operas, to Old Red Wine and Real Good Looking Boy, two brand new releases on this album.

As well as a good selection of old and new, it also contains a good selection of the sublime and the rediculous, with I'm a Boy and Happy Jack sharing the CD with Love Reign Over Me, Who Are You? and My Generation.

As well as peices by Townshend, there are some wonderful covers, Summertime Blues and Real Good Looking Boy (as far as I am aware). The Who started off as a cover band and they have always done a very good job of it.

One thing that is missing though is anything by John Entwistle. It is a compilation of Who songs entirely devoid of My Wife, Boris the Spider, Cousin Kevin or any of his other gems. How you can have a compilation which is supposed to encapsulate the band without any of his works is a mystery to me.

If you're a newcomer to The Who, or wanting to explore them for the first time, I would say this is the best album to choose. It has something for everyone, and, even if you've heard one song and hated it, you're still likely to find something you like in their repertoire, and it's probably on here. For the long time Who fan though, it comes as a bit of an annoyance, they're not new recordings of classic songs, they're the old recordings but with two new songs. But Old Red Wine and Real Good Looking Boy are undoubtedly worth buying the other tracks all over again, they are pure magic.

I love this album, if you've never heard of The Who and are looking for something new to listen to (where have you been) and also, it's a great choice. If you love The Who as much as I do, you will love Real Good Looking Boy and Old Red Wine, and not having to change the CD to play the old favourites together will probably come as a slight relief too.

I havn't listened to the who properly since being at school (a long time ago). It was one of those nostalgia cd's for me. It certainly fit the bill. It has great sounds from when they started until the 80's. Classic songs that I cant stop listening to. However I find myself with a problem! The Who are now in my head and I need more of their albums to cure my fix!!

yet again another great mix of 60's and 70's classic tracks, fine examples from the start of their music career through the films tommy and quadrophenia, with the 3 csi sound tracks thrown in for good measure.

During the 60's and 70's I bought a few Who singles that I have long since lost. Recently I heard a couple of Who songs on the radio and remembered what I was missing. I looked on good old eBay and found this excellent collection of Who songs, bought it and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting my Mod youth. I had forgotten what a great and inventive drummer and percussionist Keith Moon was - so ahead of his time. It is a great selection of songs. Sadly their excellent 'It's A Legal Matter' is missing from this CD but I guess few will agree which songs make up the seminal collection of Who numbers on just one CD. You can't go wrong with this CD if you like, or even just quite like, The Who. Great stuff - and not to be missed. Thanks boys.

  A classic full of energy

Nobody can deny that The Who are one of the greatest Rock & Roll bands ever and their music is so diverse that no track is bad. They have the musical score down to an art and the lyrics are pure genius. This CD is a great car CD as it makes the miles melt by with the classics of Pinball wizard and Who are you ?...I recommend this CD to any music lover who has not yet got this classic in their collection. I say buy it, you will not be disappointed..

purchase of the Who- Then and Now album

i bought this item following a recent TV documentary of the who`s rise to fame. I
realised that my CD collection did not include anything by the Who, a situation I had to put right, and i was not disapointed it`s a great album from a group who deserve a place in everybodies collection.

  The Who - Then & Now 2004
Review created: 11/03/08

Inside outside leave me alone - inside outside nowhere is home - inside outside where have I been? - out of my brain on the five fifteen! (from 5:15).
What a brilliant compilation album this is! but, like a lot of compilations/best ofs and greatest hits albums, the track listing is not to my 100% liking. I suppose you cannot please everyone.
Where is JOIN TOGETHER. This track should have been included along with BABA O'RILEY (which was included on the 2007 version).
What is included are legendary tracks such as SUBSTITUTE, PINBALL WIZARD, 5:15 and the full length WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN.
The two new recordings at the end, REAL GOOD LOOKING BOY and OLD RED WINE are brilliant and would grace any Who compilation album. Pity these two tracks were not recorded twenty years earlier.
On the 2007 version, as I stated, BABA O'RILEY was included in place of SUMMERTIME BLUES, which was an improvement (and should have been on the 2004 version in the first place), but sadly, OLD RED WINE was replaced by the inferior track IT'S NOT ENOUGH.
If they ever release another updated version of this album, I hope they include JOIN TOGETHER, BABA O'RILEY and re-include OLD RED WINE. I would also like the full-length version of WHO ARE YOU, instead of the single version. This would mean omitting I'M A BOY, SEE ME, FEEL ME and LOVE REIGN O'ER ME, but you cannot include them all on an 80 minute CD.
This to me would be the perfect THEN & NOW album, but it's one of The Who's greatest compilations anyway and well worth the purchase. I give it full marks!
