Album Notes This is a collection of the series of V-Discs (recordings made specificly for the U.S. Armed Forces during the World War II years) recorded by the Nat "King" Cole Trio.Includes liner notes by Bruce Elrod.Digitally remastered by Gary Bolton (Strawberry Skys Studio, West Columbia, South Carolina).A collection of the King Cole Trio's singles for V Disc, this set represents one of the finest crooners of the '40s at his best. The disc is subtitled "A Musical Contribution By America's Best For Our Armed Forces Overseas," and such tracks as "Any Old Time," "Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You," and "Sweet Lorraine" practically exude the flickering black and white romance of wartime nostalgia. So many decades later, Cole's voice still sounds incredible--jazzy, blues-inflected, but smooth and silky enough to guarantee crossover appeal. Bass and guitar lend casual, sympathetic support to Cole's slow-groove piano approach, and it's hard to imagine anything more perfect than such tracks as the melting "Embracable You" and the perennially infectious "Route 66." Cole's version of the latter was one of the songs most often requested by American soldiers during the war. This is a wonderful portrait of one of American pop music's greatest treasures. | |||||||||||||||
