To be young and carefree amid the blue waters and idyllic landscape of sun-drenched Italy in the late 1950s; that's la dolce vita Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) craves - and Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) leads. When Dickie's father, a wealthy ship builder, asks Tom to bring his errant playboy son back home to America, Dickie and his beautiful expatriate girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow), never suspect the dangerous extremes to which Ripley will go to make their lifestyle his own. After all, it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody... Review ID: 10000000001596901 Was this review helpful? Report this review Reviews Review created: 29/06/08 by: brilliant storyline, typically Highsmith and similar to old Hitchcock thrillers but with Jude Law, Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow. Directed by Antony Minghella. As if the story, acting and direction wern't enough, the music soundtrack is fabulous and set against the most scenic locations in Europe, Including, among others, Ischia and Procida in the bay of Naples, Naples itself, the Amalfi coast, Rome& Venice Review ID: 10000000007736739 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 31/05/08 by: Brilliant thriller set against a breathtaking Italian backdrop. The story of Thomas Ripley who by chance borrows a jacket which starts a conversation where he is sent to Italy to persuade wealthy Dickie Greenleaf to come home to his father. When he meets Dickie, Tom turns double agent and begins to enjoy and covet the playboy way of life and the lovely Dickie. Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) takes thinking on your feet to a whole new level as bit by bit the choices Tom makes lead him to a nightmare journey where he takes on the identity of Dickie. Jude Law is brilliant as the spoilt Dickie Greenleaf and you actually feel sorry for Tom as he is included one minute and deserted the next, as Marj (Gwyneth Paltrow) says when you are favoured by Dickie it is like the sun shining on you, but it's very cold when he leaves you. Brilliant tale of a man who will stop at nothing to stay one step ahead. Sumptuous settings, top class cast, tense plot, great viewing. Review ID: 10000000007336173 Was this review helpful? Report this review This is one of those films that's like your favourite book-you can't put it down and you know that you will enjoy it all over again. Superb stuff with superb acting by superb actors, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Matt Damon. A thriller with Tom (Matt Damon) aspiring to take over Dickies's (Jude Law)lifestyle, wealth and ulimately his identity plus his girlfriend. Turn down the lights, open the wine, curl up and enjoy. I wanted to see more works directed by Andrew Mengelli especially after his untimely death. Bought the film after watching a documentary on his life and work and watched clips from this film. I love the English Patient and I was not disappointed with this film either. Review ID: 10000000006697432 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
