Album Notes
Full performer name: Van Morrison/Lonnie Donegan/Chris Barber.Personnel: Van Morrison, Lonnie Donnegan (vocals, acoustic guitar); Chris Barber (vocals, trombone, double bass); Paul Henry, Big Jim Sullivan (acoustic guitar); Nick Payne (harmonica, saxophone, background vocals); Dr. John (piano); Nicky Scott, Chris Hunt (electric bass); Alan"Sticky" Wicket (washboard, percussion).Engineers: Walter Samuel, Barry Clemson, Greg Hacket.Recorded at Whitla Hall, Belfast, Ireland on November 20 & 21, 1998. Includes liner notes by Van Morrison, Lonnie Donegan and Chris Barber.Skiffle--a weird amalgam of folk, blues, and British music hall, never really caught on in the U.S., but in England it was the most important vector of post-war British pop before the coming of rock & roll. Donegan was the genre's biggest star (his first hit, "Rock Island Line," was made in 1954 as a member of trombonist Chris Barber's trad jazz band), and here he reunites with Barber and younger skiffle fan Morrison for spirited, sloppy-in-the-best-way, renditions of his (and the genre's) biggest hits. At 70, Donegan still sounds exactly like he did in the '50s, and all three musicians seem to be having the time of their lives, as does special guest pianist Dr. John, whose New Orleans influence adds some welcome variety.

Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 - ...Donegan and Morrison relive [the] heady days, roping in Dr. John for a couple of guest spots as they deftly pick their way through the better end of the skiffle songbook, having fun....File under irrepressible.Mojo (2/00, p.101) - ...Van makes a contribution, as do MacRebennack and Chris Barber, but it's [Lonnie] Donegan's nifty take on Leadbelly and co that provides most of the repertoire, and without his almost satirically speedy delivery and zany modulations...it might not have turned out so well...Uncut (3/00, p.86) - 4 stars out of 5 - ...Molten firepower, raucous humour, soulful invocations and not a washboard in sight. Get on board...CMJ (1/31/00, pp.24-5) - ...spends more time having fun with the folk, blues, jazz and country that inspired skiffle than playing 'proper' skiffle music....consistently sure-footed...Dirty Linen (6-7/00, pp.76-7) - ...Thanks to Morrison and his 2 childhood heroes for this show, in which they sparkle as they rip it up in grand old fashion one more time. A labor of love that you'll love to hear.
