Album Notes
This is a compilation of Terry Allen tracks that have appeared on various soundtracks including David Byrne's "True Stories."Personnel include: Terry Allen (vocals); Jo Harvey Allen (spoken vocals); Lloyd Maines (pedal steel guitar, banjo, background vocals); Kenny Maines (bass guitar, background vocals); Donnie Maines (drums, background vocals); Richard Bowden, Bonnie Wilkerson, Donna Jo Barnes (background vocals).Recording information: Caldwell Studios, Lubbock, TX.Subtitled "Terry Allen's Greatest Missed Hits," the 1992 compilation SILENT MAJORITY skips material from the albums Allen had recorded up to that point, JUAREZ, LUBBOCK (ON EVERYTHING), SMOKIN' THE DUMMY, BLOODLINES, and PEDAL STEEL & ROLL BACK. Instead, it gathers odds and ends from Allen's long and fruitful career as a composer of songs for plays, dance performances, and films. Allen, a multimedia genius whose primary claim to fame is his work as a sculptor and painter, has worked with a variety of collaborators, most often his wife, actress and playwright Jo Harvey Allen, for whose works Allen wrote many of these songs. Highlights include "Big Ol' White Boys," the deadly ironies of "I Love Germany," and Allen's brilliant contribution to the soundtrack of David Byrne's film TRUE STORIES, "Cocktail Desperado." The pleasures of SILENT MAJORITY are many.

Editorial Reviews
4 Stars - Excellent - ...deadly funny subversiveness on the order of Sam Shepard's TRUE WEST or Leonard Cohen's recent meditation on `Democracy'....a musical portrait of Manifest Destiny gone haywire...Q (7/93, p.104) - 3 Stars - Good - ...One of that select crew for whom the word `maverick' is not a conceit...absorbing stuff for students of the Texas scene...Uncut (p.122) - 4 stars out of 5 - [T]his scrapbook of sorts is a worthy primer for the uninitiated....[He's] the most fascinating of his Lubbock Mafia peers.
