The Shining (DVD 2001)

Unless you're a youngster, mollusc or maybe a refugee in a galaxy far far away, the majority of us have all heard of and appreciate, with a chilling fondness: The Shining. Stanley Kubrick's film, based on a Stephen King best seller and starring a young, energetic and very [credibly] insane Jack Nicholson oozes with all the credentials necessary to shout loudly and confidently on every aspect of its production.

You know the synopsis, and if you don't, you don't need to! Just take this journey on the say-so of an enlightened populous of cinematic aficionado's.

This is horror delivered with the threat of an everyday reality we can all relate to and [with reluctance] empathise with.

Once you feel 'The Shining' you're hooked!

Heard good reviews about this film but to be honest i didn't particularly enjoy it, it was very disturbing to watch and kept you on the edge, but i thought they would have been more excitement in the plot. But overall it was good. There were many good theoretical implications that the director Stanley Kubrick had considered with regards the symbolisms of the maze (referring to the human brain) and how it relates to the characters personality traits (losing his mind)
The soundtrack has a great impact on the viewers emotions throughout the film, the synthesized sounds have great effect causing the viewer to feel uncomfortable and anxious.
Overall the film was average, could have been a lot better i thought though. But its good for it's time of production.

Jack Torence (Jack Nicholson) gets a job as a winter caretaker of an old hotel, he travels there to live with his wife and young son. Once there, they are the only occupants and soon become cut off from the outside world by the heavy snow. The son Danny has clairvoyant powers and starts to see the ghosts that haunt the hotel, the same ghosts that are visiting his father, driving him slowly mad. One of Nicholson‘s greatest performances and one of Kubrick s most memorable films, there is a slow brooding in the build up to the shocking finale where Jack takes matters into his own hands. A truly original film.

I have been dying to see this film again, excuse the pun, since I saw it last a few years ago on television.
I remember being fascinated by it since i saw the cinema posters as a child when the film was on general release.
Stanley Kubrick has to be one of the best directors of the 20th century and this film, based on a Stephen King novel, is one of the scariest of the era.
Can you imagine being in an isolated location that's haunted by murderous ghosts, who are slowly possessing your husband and willing him to kill you and your pyschic son?
Welcome to "The Shining".
A wonderful pace, a great cast and Kubrick at his best.
If you really do want to be scared, this is the film for you!

one of the all time greats, and its good to see it has been digital remastered.
i dont use the words "Outstanding & masterpeice" at a wim, but this film & book, deserve them, without a dought in my mind!

excellent example of a psych-thriller that has stood the test of time - don't watch it on your own or with the lights off !!!

I have seen this movie a few times and have enjoyed every time i have seen it,Jack Nicholson is superb and i saw on Ebay the DVD was selling at a great price and decided to buy it for myself to watch again,a classic movie to keep.

I bought this for my older grandson who is a keen stephen king fan, he is well pleased with it ,it is now a firm part of his collection

this dvd was excellent very chilling. i bought it because my husband said it was a great film and it was.

Always thought of this being an excellent film from first seeing at the cinema.
The excellent acting and sheer creepiness of the story stands the test of time in its genre.It remains one of the best Stephen King stories to be filmed,always worth a watch especially when purchased as a bargain on ebay!

Great film, even after this length of time it is still a brilliant film, if you haven't seen it, WHY NOT!! It is one of the must see films before you die.

This is an excellent film for when it was done,even though the effects back then are no way as good as now but it is fantastic, I mainly brought this film for the catch phrase 'Heres Johnny'

Not as good as the book. I always enjoy Jack Nicolson with here,s Johnny. The chase scene in the maze could have been better,but its still tense enough.Classic.

I absoloutely love this film. It's so confusing which just made it scarier but it's not too terrible to get really scared by. It's quite messed and Jack Nicholson is amazing in it and really works that physco look. You have to watch this film at least once in your life. It's just a classic cult horror film.

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the battle scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography.

needed a film, more specifically this film. knew it was good. could have gone to a high stret shop, but could not be bothered. went online, bought it watched it loved it. easy.

I bought this film because its an absolute classic.
Jack Nicholson is awesome in this performance and its a must see for any film fan!!

a classic kubrick film and good to watch maybe not quite as good as the steven king version but a good effort

Brilliant movie, nothing to dislike about it. I would recommend this film to all thriller/comedy movie lovers. It's a thriller/comedy film that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

its a film that keeps you on edge not with what your seeing but what you dont see if that makes sense its a spooky film to be watched with the lights on

I liked that the DVD was not too expensive, free postage and packaging was an added bonus. Good quality film and sound.

Excellent film. I can understand why this was voted the best horror film of all. I have been trying to get this film as it is really good. Can be watched again & again
