Includes liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.Digitally remastered by Roger Nichols (Digital Atomics, Miami, Florida). All tracks have been digitally remastered. It was the year of America's bicentennial celebration, but on 1976's THE ROYAL SCAM, Steely Dan masterminds Fagen and Becker did not share in the exultant spirit of the times. The title track--a vision of fallen America from the point of view of immigrants--has a mock-celebratory chorus: "See the glory of the Royal Scam," which typifies SCAM's heartfelt cynicism. In their next two releases (their last), Steely Dan's sound would smoothen and incorporate less rock. This is perhaps their darkest record, and for a band known for its arch mixture of L.A. cool and ennui, that's saying something. Guitar heroes were roundly worshipped in the '70s, and two of the record's standout tracks, "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive," feature incendiary axe work by Larry Carlton. Interestingly, both glorify outsiders: The former tells the story of legendary drug chemist Owsley Stanley, and the latter is a first-person account of a murderer on the lam. Other highlights: the crisp "Green Earrings" the lounge-chair funk of "Haitian Divorce" and the inscrutable "Fez," whose principal lyric is "I'm never gonna do it without the fez on/don't make me do it without the fez on." Report this review Review created: 07/07/07 by: This really doesnt need saying to the followers of Steely Dans music over the last decades, but for anyone who is unfamiliar, this album is a great middle period introducer to the art of the most influential and under appreciated band to grace western music. Forget the beatles, these boys have left indellible marks on virtually every band in the lst thirty years. That guitar riff you like so much? The subtle brass punctuation? That backing singer sounds like Michael MacDonald in his doobie days! Its all the influence of the Dan, and for a band to attract the attention of the greatest male popular music voice of the latter 20th Centure speaks volumes. All work of the dan/ Listen to the Fez-classic- Green earrings, perhaps a hint of what steely dan were about five years before. Best track, Dont take me alive for sure,Haitian divorce you will know. The caves of altamira and Dont take me alive are an example of Fagen and Becker lyrics at the extreme. If you like the lyrics try Gaucho a later album 'fur' size (fine coat ??)Title track is superb, think The Wyndward arrives in late 1950's on englands shores. Buy this album. Listen to it twice. Dont try to work out the cover art. Put your hand in your pocket and buy all the other albums. You wont be dissapointed and you will feel oddly at home with what you hear. Why ? After this Steely started to lose it a bit, still worth the air time. Review ID: 10000000001380269 Was this review helpful? Report this review The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic & Aja are in my opinion the best three albums that this band produced. The Royal Scam has the classic 70's hit Haitian Divorce with the quirky guitar catch lines. It also has The Fez on it with the brilliant line 'Ain't never gonna do it without the fez on'. I bought it so that i could preserve my original vinyl. I can honestly say that there is nothing that i dislike about this or any of their other works. Truly brilliant musicians, great songwriters, intelligent lyrics and a magical fusion between californian west coast rock and jazz. Far better than any of the musical dross we have to listen to today. Review ID: 10000000001165093 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
