An intriguing glimpse

Most Rocky Horror-lovers will confess that they were introduced to it through the film, and there's no shame in that. With film as a wider, more accessible, and cheaper medium one is more likely to see it before one sees a stage show.
It is therefore interesting to compare the two, and it is easy to take the film as the definitive version for the comparison, as it remains the same whilst the stage show is forever being re-interpreted and recreated, despite its predecessing the film.
This album is a recording of one version of the stage show, intriguingly featuring Tim McInnery as Frank N. Furter. Though not as imposing a vocal personality, McInnery holds his own as Frank - although one must accept that Frank here is effectively a different character to that in the film. The biggest problem I have with this version is McInnery's struggling singing voice; he just about manages, but it's clear he wasn't cast for his singing abilities.
The album highlights the differences between the versions of the show for those who know it well, and one may be surprised to recognise parts that have been changed for the film - giving an insight into its direction and production. One can see how parts have been altered for clarity or simplicity in the film, and yet the stage show recording occasionally gives better explanation for happenings in the somewhat abstract storyline.
Janet's mannerism is thoroughly, thoroughly annoying, but other than this, the album is a fascinating insight and a must for fans.
