I bought this film after reading the book, that was recommended to me by a friend. I was a little cautios at first as ive been disappointed by films made about books. However this is not one of them , I love the film and have watched it several times. It is a afntastic buy and would recommend it to anyone else xx
By far, the best films EVER made (after Starship Troupers). It has everything you could want from a film. Action, adventure, monsters, pirates, funny lines, swash buckling sword action, a dashing hero, a lovely lady. I liked it so much, I names my son after one of the characters. "My name is Indigo Montaris. You killed my father. Prepare to die!" No DVD colection should be without.
Flight Of The Navigator... The Never-ending Story... Transformers: The Movie (1986)... Back to the Future I and II. Some films encapsulate the 80's and are, rightly or wrongly, oversold in the current clime of bastardizing everything from clothes to music to toys...
The Princess Bride however, is a classic that remains unsullied by the endless re-vamps. Quietly understated, this film is simply a must see.
For many (including myself), a cast that includes Fred Savage (The Wonder Years), Peter Falk (Columbo), Billy Kristal and Andre The Giant needs no more explanation. Coupled with a musical score by Mark Knopfler that is remarkable in its composition and the polar opposite of his stadium rock output of the day, and a story that although childish, is very well executed and is captivating from start to finish.
If you genuinely yearn for times when films where entertaining, amusing and less overblown than the escapist fantasies of today, this is a MUST SEE.
Great, slightly cheesy, 80's classic! great film, great story, classic moments! fencing, fighting, miracles, giants, revenge, ROUS's, fire spurts, lightening sand, true love! what more could you want!
If you've seen this film before you no doubt agree with the review title of "the best film ever", and if you've not seen it then what have you been doing?
This has comedy mixed into all it's layers. It has swords, tragedy, death, piretes (well one anyway) and even true love - waht more can you ask for!
Bought this film as it always was a family favourite and although my children have all grown up now, we are all watching it again with my two lovely grandsons who think it is great, would recommend it for any age group as it has something for everyone, a very memorable film.
A witty, tonge-in-cheek version of the classic fairytale genre. Hilarious characterisations, witty dialogue, a beautiful princess and a handsome hero. What more could a girl want?
One of my all time favourite films - so good, that when I loaned it out on video it never came back! Had to buy it again, but the time had come to get it on DVD. The DVD itself is straightforward in that it has no special features to speak of, so basically you get the film and that's it. The film is a joy - a "fairy story" with heroes and villains, fights, bizarre characters, great lines and lots of humour - I suspect much of it tongue in cheek. A family film which will appeal to children and adults alike. If you are ever in need of I lift, I recommend this film as a good antidote.
You know when a film has achieved true cult status when an internet page springs up with a test that asks 'Find out which <insert fim title> character you are. The Princess Bride has achieved such lofty heights. And rightly so it is a brilliant and charming family film. Basically a love story between the Bride of the film's title, Buttercup, and her young beau Wesley. But this film offers so much more. As you follow the adventures of Buttercup as she becomes unwittingly embroiled in the politiking between two fictional countries; Floren and Guilder, and is kidnapped by one of the most inept trios going, you root for her saviour, Wesley, as he defys the infamous dread pirate roberts and her would be kidnappers in order to rescue her and you experience romance, intrigue, revenge, comradeship, adventure and rodents of unquestionable size all along the way. This is a simple straightforward film and my entire family have fallen for this friendly inoffensive movies charm. Plus it easily stands up to repeated viewing. There are cameos from Mel Smith and a heavily made up Billy Crystal and there is a gentle soundtrack from Mark Knopfler of Dire Straights. Plus the enigmatic and totally brilliant Christopher Guest (of Spinal Tap fame) is the six fingered baddie. What more could you want? Essentially just a lovely sunday afternoon movie for when everyone is sat on the sofa.
I love this film! I watched it a few times when I was little and recently saw it again on TV and was reminded how brilliant it was. It's funny looking back on how scared I was of the R.O.U.S's (Rodents Of Unusual Size of course, if you're wondering!) but now I've seen it as an adult, it's completely hilarious in an grown up way aswell. One bit that always makes me laugh is when the main dude is kind of "half dead" and his head keeps falling down because he has no strength to hold it up. You'll know what I mean if you've seen it! Like it says in the other reviews- brilliant watching for a lazy afternoon!
This film is amazing. Its about true love,(NOT a sickly, hurl inducing kind of true love movie though) but its got the bonus a sword fighting, chases, escapes, miracles & all the other stuff good movies are made of! Also read the book, its pretty cool too.
An up to date take on the classic fairytale scenario. A Princess, a humble but handsome suitor, tales of pirates and daring swordplay, what more could you want for an afternoon's viewing. Suitable for children, but funny on different levels. My children loved it. A tale of true love conquering over all. Thoroughly recommended.
music by mark knopfler (dire straits) and excellent acting from the likes of Andre the Giant, Mandy Patinkin, Peter Falk, Chris Sarandon & Billy Crystal. Totally loved this movie that makes you feel all warm and happy inside! Cary Elwes and Robin Wright-Penn are effective as long-lost lovers and the fight scenes are just superb! Andre stinks his opponents out and the swash-buckling between Patinkin and Elwes and later Sarandon are awesome! a perfect Sunday afternoon movie!
