The Piper at the Gates of Dawn 40th anniversary edition
Review created: 01/06/09

Great edition. The mono and the stereo discs both have something different to offer, both wonderful in their own way and, whether in mono or stereo, this remains one of the best albums of all time. In 1967 it was amazing - nothing was even close to it - setting the standard for psych rock to try to emmulate. Even now it doesn't sound anything like 40 years old. Disc 3 is interesting but mostly not Syds best work.

3CD Pink Floyd Piper at Gates of Dawn- U must read this

This is a three CD version of the Piper album - the first CD is a mono version of the album, the second a stereo version of the album. Sounds boring so far - well the third CD contains a number of must have rarities including the classic (in my opinion) "Apples and Oranges" in both mono and stereo. And for Syd fans there is an added extra bonus - a copy of "Fart Enjoy" included in the package. On top of that you get all the words for the songs so for example the start of Astronomy Domine, which I allways thought was "Like a Limpit green the second scene" actually becomes "Lime and Limpid Green the second scene". All in all this is a great buy and worth the extra money for the bonus items...

A must have item that could have been done so much better, that's it in a nutshell!
lavishly packaged . Firstly the booklet refered to as Syd Barrett's notes has had one page excised from it, okay it has a lady's breasts on it and a few swear words but I was disappointed to find it missing and with no explanation.
It's nice to have the lyrics for the album (again!) but it would have been even nicer to include the lyrics for the 45,s and alternate version of Matilda mother. Previously unreleased alternate takes are very thin on the ground (2 tracks) but being a lifelong Syd Fan,I still felt compelled to purchase. All in all this is a missed opportunity to put out some of the still unreleased Syd/Floyd tracks...So when the 50th anniversary rolls around I hope EMI/Floyd can be a little more generous, perhaps including BBC sessions, more out takes, live performances or even the promotional films that were made for Arnold Layne(x2) Scarecrow, and the look of the week footage of Pow R Toc H and Astronomy Domine etc...This is a good package but it could have been a definitive resume, must try harder!!!

  Syds Legacy
Review created: 08/12/07

I bought this CD as a big fan of the late Syd Barret I have already got the Original Piper LP in my collection in good old Mono.
I was intrieged as too what the album would sound like in stereo plus a chance to hear all of the early singles without the clicks and pops.
The only downside or critism of the 40th Anniversary release is they could have added the 2 songs Syd recorded at time ie Scream thy last sceam!
and excluded one of the interstellar overdrive tracks.

Having said that the packaging was superb and all the artwork and before now New photos Some great memories from a truly Great band God Bless U Syd. Alan
