THE ORPHANAGE is an extremely accomplished work. The story concerns Laura (Belen Rueda), who has returned with her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and adopted child Simon (Roger Princep) to the large manor where she was raised in an orphanage as a child. Laura is determined to fix up the abandoned house and open it as a refuge for ill children. But from the moment she returns, the past begins to haunt her. It isn't long before she begins to see the children who she used to play with as a seven-year-old. And when Simon goes missing one afternoon, she's convinced that they have taken him hostage. What follows is a murky descent into Laura's mind, where she doesn't know what is real and what is a figment of her tortured imagination. Bayona brings Sanchez's complex script to life with the help of Faura's haunting imagery and Valazquez's atmospheric score.
But what makes THE ORPHANAGE an even greater achievement is its insistence on being more than just a superficial scare-fest. Bayona and Sanchez are more interested in deeper themes of memory, loss, and grief, establishing Laura as a mother who feels guilt over not being able to protect her child from outside forces. The result is a film that is both unsettling and moving.

In just a few minutes, Juan Antonio Bayona sets the tone of his eerie, atmospheric first feature....An unexpectedly poignant ghost story, unsettling yet refreshing thriller...it generates deep feeling while implicating you in its terrors and traumas."

I loved this film. This film is about a woman who used to live in an orphanage which has now been turned into a house which she lives in. However her old live has come back to haunt her when her child gets kidnapped and she discovers who did it and why...
This an amazing scary film, but not in the classic monster way, it is a proper spooky film in a way that is so original and you have to see it.

Very eerie and creepy and keeps you on the edge of your seat! Guillermo Del Toro is a genius. Try his other films: Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone and Cronos. All 3 are surreal and keep your attention throughout. Wicked!

This spooky, atmospheric chiller is enough to make your hair stand on end! A woman who grew up in an orphanage returns years later with her husband and adopted son to buy it and re-open it as a home for disabled children. Soon the little boy disappears and the mother, driven to the verge of a mental breakdown, descends into a world of terrors.

  El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
Review created: 04/11/08

'El Orfanato' is a excellent example of the 'ghost' genre. The ominous ambience of the eponymous orphanage is supported by characterisation which includes a woman, who having lived there as a child, returns with mysterious and terrifying consequences. The grotesque image of a child who constantly wore a sack over his head permeates a clever plot in which one part of the action (Not telling which one!!) rivals the ending of 'Carrie' in making the audience jump from the safety of their skins. This film compares favourably with 'Pan's Labyrinth' (El Laberinto del Fauno, a film which I would also highly recommend.

Like japan, spain is making its mark on the horror film industry with movies like REC and this film the Orphanage by Guillermo Del Toro who was responsable for films like Pans Labyrinth, the Devils Backbone,Cronos,Blade 2 and the Hellboy films. He has now taken the place of peter jackson to direct the Lord of the rings prequel the Hobbit,so you know your watching a well put together film with Del Toro.
The great thing about the Orphanage is that it has a simple story that is easy to follow. Its the performances from the actors which are spot on and like with the films from Japan, music and sounds play a big part in creating a creepy atmosphere and camera shots of things you might only see out of the corner of your eye help to make this a classic horror film in its own right.
Its not hard to see why this is to be remade in America after its success but I know any remake will only be a poor imitation of this great film.

  The scariest film there is
Review created: 18/05/09

This is an excellent horror movie. Even better it does not stretch the imagination, it's so clever and brilliant and deeply frightening as it could all be 'true' if you were the protagonist with the unravelling mind, or you could choose to see it that the ghosts are real..

Excellent believable acting all round and I loved the brave protagonist, much better than the useless sexy young women who are usual slasher movie fare. not that this is a slasher, its a psychological thriller but wet your pants scary.

The only point, and its probably just me, is that i'm not sure the plot is enhanced by the central character having grown up in the orphanage she wants to buy.. it just seems like she'd avoid the place like the plague, and makes you think why she didn't feel suspicious at the time when all of her classmates were disappearing, and do something about it. But this is a minor deatail and there really are some excellent plot twists. Better yet you dont even realise its subtitled you get so into it.

Venture into the garage to get a lager BEFORE watching this is my advice :) , you will be too frightened after, and don't put bags on your head..

The orphanage is a above average chiller, recommended to me by my daughter. The story is quite unusual - a woman returns to her former ophanage home with the idea of adopting children with special needs; however her own adopted child goes missing after a series of strange events. The tension builds up slowly but events become more alarming as it goes on. The acting is good and the story well crafted. Its very scary in parts - not for the faint hearted don't expect a happy ending and don't buy if you can't be bothered with sub titles.

One of the best non-English language films of the past 20 years. Full of atmosphere, twists, strong characterisation, and authenticity. Highly recommended.

The Orhanage, a good creepy film
Review created: 02/08/09

I have been wanting to see this film, but it is still quite expensive and hard to find in the shops. It is a really good story, of a woman brought up in an orphanage until her adoption,, who decides to return there to set up a childrens home. Her young son goes missing, will she find him, and who are the mysterious chldren and the strange social worker?
The fact that it is in Spanish, with subtitles didn't spoil it,and I don't usually like that type of thing.
The film is very creepy, not too much blood , good old fashioned atmospheric entertainment. All the loose ends are tied up too, you,re not left wondering like some of these films.

This was a very spooky Spanish language film. In parts it rather stretched the imagination; however it maintained my interest throughout. A friend had recommended it to me and I have in turn recommended it to others.

  Worth watching
Review created: 03/03/09

I brought this film because I'd loved another film by the same director, Pans Labyrinth.

The only problem we had watching it was working out that you had to view it in widescreen mode to be able to read the subtitles on my telly.

This film is a dark, pensive, well acted, film which has a small twist at the end as all good thrillers should. I really enjoy the way the director uses the camera to it's best advantage and really makes you feel as if you are in the scene with the actors.

It's not as good in my mind as Pan's Labyrinth but an enjoyable film anyway, and would recomend watching it for an good evening in.

The Orphanage: An Eerie & Frighteningly Good Must-See
Review created: 03/12/08

This was a very atmospheric film which definitely lived up to the hype the director, following "Pan's Labyrinth" is becoming famous for: namely, for being beautiful, surreal, twisted, dark, and scary. The storyline invoked Deja Vu of The Crow, Children of the Corn, Phantom of the Opera, Poltergeist, The Shining, and other films, yet was a distinctly new and altogether gripping tale. I jumped out of my seat in shock more than once, and if you can handle that, and like the eerie weirdness this director is a master of, you'll love this film. It's frightfully good.

  Fantstic must-see thriller!

Although you have to read the English sub-titles, this does not distract from the film at all. It is well written and directed, and has you on the edge of your seat all the way through, a couple of gorey scenes really had me hiding my eyes, but mostly this is a pychological spine-tingler!! I bought it on recommendation and wasn't disappointed!

The film grabs you and makes you stare at the screen at all times, due to the subtitles. It's great. Even if there's a scary part coming up, you still have to watch the screen because otherwise you don't know what's going on! I think the story line is great.
You'll love it.

This was an enjoyable film and not too far fetched. The story line sort of plodded along and I have to say with all the hype about this film I expected more than I got. But not to say I didnt enjoy it I did.
The thing that struck me most odd was that a man would leave his wife alone in a house which clearly had all sorts of supernatural goings on occurring. I have to say I would not be that brave but she was and the plot thickens.
The film ends in a sad but kind of heart warming way. All in all worth watching.

  The Orphanage 2 Disc DVD
Review created: 18/09/08

Laura spent the happiest years of her childhood growing up in an orphanage by the seaside, cared for by the staff and fellow orphans whom she loved as brothers and sisters. Now, thirty years later, she returns with her husband Carlos and Simon, their 7-year-old son, with a dream of restoring and reopening the long-abandoned orphanage as a home for disabled children.

The new home and mysterious surroundings awaken Simon’s imagination and the boy starts to spin a web of fantastic tales and not-so-innocent games… As the opening day draws near, tension builds within the family. Carlos remains skeptical, believing that Simon is making everything up in a desperate bid for attention. But Laura slowly becomes convinced that something long-hidden and terrible is lurking in the old house, something waiting to emerge and inflict appalling damage on her family.

I wanted to watch this film so much but was apprehensive due to the film being spoken in Spanish with English subtitles. I must say though that to anyone wanting to watch it,DO NOT let this put you off watching this amazing film.
You will be scared,on the edge of your seat and them extremely emotional at the end. The best ending i have ever seen for a long long time. You will feel the heartache of this mother.
If you do one thing in 2008n then watch THE ORPHANAGE.
