Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP (Explicit) (CD 2000)

Now that the Grammy Awards are over and most of the hype has died down over Eminem, I think now is the time to review the recording that has gotten so many people upset. Despite what you may have heard about Eminem, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III, or what you may think of him, hearing this album you may make you rethink your opinion of him.

I borrowed the CD from a friend just because I wanted to listen to "The Real Slim Shady" because as far as I was concerned, that was the only song worth listening to. Well I just happened to let the rest of the CD run and what I heard shocked, amazed, disgusted, surprised, made me laugh and entertained me all at once. "The Marshall Mathers LP" picks up where Eminem left off with his life and music in "The Slim Shady LP". Yes, it is true he does rap about drugs, violence, raping his mother, killing his (soon to be ex) wife, the ills of society, hypocrisies, homosexuals, bubble gum pop, and the media. However, there isn't a word that does not ring true, and that is why people are pissed off. He tackles issues without reservation and has given the music world some hard-core lyrics that haven't been heard since the days of NWA and Public Enemy. As Eminem says on the track "The Real Slim Shady":

I'm like a head trip to listen to cuz I'm only giving you
Things you joke about with your friends inside your living room
The only difference is I got the balls to say it
In front of y'all and I don't gotta be false or sugar coated at all

The truth is not kind, and neither is he. He mentions the ultra-sensitive Columbine issue and how suddenly school violence is a problem since it is affecting affluent suburbs in "The Way I am". He points out that the parents who blame his music for their son's foul language are the same ones who let their preteen daughters wear cosmetics in "Who Knew".

Eminem also deals with issues of a personal nature, outside of his mother and spousal problems. The songs "Who Knew" and "The Way I Am" and "I'm Back" are personal diatribes to the media, detractors, and fans concerning how his fame influences the actions of other people and that he is not to blame as a result of those actions. He snickers that people expect him to "clean up [his] lyrics, while our President gets his dick sucked?" You can not only hear, but also feel the angst and frustration in his voice during these songs. This is clearly a man who is fed up with being blamed for the tribulations of humanity.

Now, some of the songs, I admit do get your attention and upon hearing them one can understand why feminist and gay rights groups are up in arms. The song "Kill You" is very misogynistic, where he simply states, "Bitch I'ma kill you!" and "Just bend over and take it slut, okay Ma?" and "Kim" which starts out as a lullaby to his 2 year old daughter, but quickly turns into a graphic and vicious narration of a fantasy to kill his estranged wife, Kim (any wonder she's filed for divorce?).

Then you just have some songs that simply there for gansta/outta-da-hood value. Such as "Remember Me", "Amityville", "The Drug Ballad", "Bitch Please II", and "Under The Influence", and "Criminal". You either will or won't like these songs, but other tracks of note on the LP such as "Marshall Mathers" are very introspective and "Stan" demonstrates Eminem's writing talent and story telling ability.

Verdict-Thrilling, will send a chill down your spine.

  Eminem aka Marshal Mathers
Review created: 02/02/09

A good all round album with some brilliant and popular tracks such as Slim Shady, Stan and The Way I Am. A recommended album for anyone who likes lyrical genius with a hint of serious undertones, a kind of tongue in cheek peek at the rap universe whilst maintaining a solid array of serious yet quirky songs. This is album is a collector's album, and for the price.......well it's bullshit if you don't buy it.

The Eminem Show Is Just A Tiny Bit Better
Review created: 06/11/08

Theres no doubt that the fact that the Mathers CD is better than the first CD, probably because of the song 'Stan', but there's some exceptional tracks on the Mathers CD and many people prefer this one to the Eminem Show. Personally, I prefer the Eminem Show just very slightly but they are both masterpieces lyrically. I always think that George Michael wrote the best songs of the 80's, Noel Gallagher the 90's, but find Eminem hard to beat for pure genius lyrics (albeit controversial) in this decade. Even Elton John appreciates the genius in Eminems lyrics, aswell as many others in the music industry.
Eminem must be a very loyal man, because D12 and 50 Cent would be nobodys without Eminems backing, but they fall so far short of Eminem himself. Its nice to know that he's not only made money for himself, but has not forgotten his roots and made sure that the people who knew him when he was nothing have been rewarded with millions too.
Fantastic CD, and for its time, groundbreaking too. He can do serious stuff so well, and when he wants to be funny, he really is very very funny.

Eminem's second major hit album. It isn't as good and original as The Slim Shady LP, but the tunes are still fantastic.

With a few world wide hits, and some tracks of his best work, this is a very good album.

It's well worth the money!

BRILLIANT ALBUM EMINEMS BEST, AND ONE OF THE BEST RAP A
Review created: 13/03/07

After the briliant debut, slim shady LP, eminem comes with an even better album ,ands it bloomin amazin, part of what makes this album is that hes so angry on it, and the anger goes in to the music, you can feel his pain on every song, eminem is also an amazing lyricist, his way with words is genius, and he has terrific multi syllable rhyming scheme, he also comes up with several genuinely funny jokes and punchlines on this album, and he does lots of different types of songs, and every song is brilliant, he has a great voice too, his voice makes you pay attention to what he says, dr dre and eminem himself did the beats the beats, which are brilliant ,the only slight let down on the album is the lack of talent of guest appearances, such as bizarre on amityville, this track would have been fine without him, as he cannot rap at all, overall, this is one of the best rap albums ever made, and a genuine contender for the best!

All of the eminem albums are being sold as LP, which means Long Play which normally means it is on vinyl.

All advertised eminem are sold in this manner, which is rare.

Some of the songs on this album are very hardcore and explicit, but despite that it's a fantastic album.

Every song on this album is performed and written with a lot more passion than most of his newer stuff. I feel this is Eminem at his peak. From all the albums of his that I've heard, this one definitely comes top.
