Album Notes Genesis: Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute); Phil Collins (vocals, vibraphone, percussion); Steve Hackett (guitar); Michael Rutherford (12-string guitar, bass); Tony Banks (keyboards).Additional personnel: Brian Eno.Recorded at Island Mobile Studio, Wales, Great Britain. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Peter Gabriel's conceptual lyricism reached its apex on the double-length LAMB LIES DOWN. An epic undertaking even for a band used to 10- and 20-minute songs, LAMB weaves over 20 songs into one long suite ostensibly about the tribulations of its urban protagonist Rael. The group achieves an unprecedented level of focus and force here. No matter how complex the guitar and keyboard themes get, they're driven home with enough force and conviction to make them instantly memorable. The panoramic scale of Gabriel's lyrics is easily equal to the grandeur of the music, making this at once Genesis's most hard-edged and most complicated album. From the lush sweep of the opening title track to the almost Beatles-like Britpop of "Counting Out Time," Genesis is at the top of its compositional game throughout LAMB. Having thoroughly topped himself with this release, Gabriel subsequently quit the group, leaving Phil Collins to take over as vocalist for the next phase of the Genesis story. Reviews Review created: 01/10/08(updated 05/10/08) by: This master piece by Genesis was Peter Gabriels last work before leaving the band and by far their best piece of material to date ( in my opinion ). The whole double c.d. is a story and the lyrics must be listened to, to make any sence of it. Most of this album is the soul work of Peter Gabriel, anyone familiar with his work would have guessed that anyway. There was a gradual change in Genesis music after Peter Gabriel left the band, and ended up to sound more like a boy band rather than the rock band that we had grown to admire. In the end it became difficult to separate Genesis music from Phil Collins' solo work. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is an album that requires time and attention when played for the first few times to grasp whats going on in there and to understand the story thats being told. It is a very clever and intelligent piece of work. apparently Peter Gabriel whanted to make this c.d. into a movie.....Come on then, lets have it Pete. If your thinking of entering into the Gabriel era for the first time this is probably not the best starting point - there is alot going on within the confines of this double album, and for the newby listener there is alot to take in. I myself have had many many years of listening this album and once its in you it never leaves. The album itself is fantastic - rated by some as their best and it is certainly in the top three. This is a concept album (don't stop reading here)but the story is very indepth and for new listeners its best not to try and understand what its all about. Just listen to the tracks as seperate songs as they all stand up alone (the title track, carpet crawlers and In the cage have all been a staple part of the live shows from 1976 onwards) There isn't really a bad corner on this album its music and Lyrics are fantastic and if your used to just the modern day manufactured pop groups in the now shallow music business its a good example of what proper talent is all about. There was once talk about making a movie based on this - what about a Peter Gabriel / Tim Burton collaboration? So is it worth a purchase - simple answer is definitely but it will take a few listens to fully appreciate it Review ID: 10000000007940151 Was this review helpful? Being a baby boomer from the early fifties this album typifies the sounds we became adults with in the late sixties and early seventies. It is a wonderful innovative mishmash of ideas and wordplay originated mainly by Peter Gabriel, but with contributions by Banks and Rutherford and to a lesser extent Phil Collins. I orignally had it on vinyl, then double cassette and finally now on double CD but from the original analogue recording with all it's idiosyncrasies, it still remains a classic album evocative of that era. Brilliant words and music. Review ID: 10000000005795819 Was this review helpful? Report this review I bought it as I have been after this cd for ages. I loved Genesis back in the day and I still enjoy Peter Gabriels music today. This is a brilliant cd. Highly Recommend to original Genesis line up fans everywhere. but then they probably already know. Review ID: 10000000005694662 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
