Album Notes
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.Spyro Gyra: Julio Fernandez (vocals, guitar); Jay Beckenstein (saxophone); Scott Ambush (bass instrument).Additional personnel: Don Harris (trumpet); Dave Samuels (vibraphone); Joel Rosenblatt, Billy Kilson, Ludwig Afonso (drums); Daniel Sadownick, David Charles, Cyro Baptista (percussion).Producers: Jay Beckenstein; Julio Fernandez; Tom Schuman; Scott Ambush.Engineers: Doug Oberkircher; Eric Carlinsky.Recording information: Bear Tracks Studio, Suffern, New York (2004).Spyro Gyra has been making high caliber, accessible jazz fusion records since 1976, and 2004's THE DEEP END adds impressively to the band's track record. True to form, THE DEEP END ranges in flavor from easy listening to funky explorations that incorporate samba, Caribbean themes, and rock. The musicianship of the group's two core members, saxophonist Jay Beckenstein and keyboardist Tom Schuman, is top-drawer as usual, as are contributions from guitarist Julio Fernandez and vibraphonist Dave Samuels (who appears on several tracks, including two low-key groovers, "Beyond the Rain" and "Wiggle Room").The multi-part "Monsoon" is Spyro Gyra at their fusion-based best, moving from lilting, Indian melodies, to lounge swing, to heavy blues-rock riffing (by way of Fernandez's guitar leads). But audiences fond of the group's softer tendencies will not be disappointed; "In Your Arms" and "The Crossing" are pure light jazz, with delicate rhythmic support, and airy melodies courtesy of Beckenstein and Shuman. Such nimble, sophisticated gear-shifting testifies to Spyro Gyra's reputation as one of jazz's most popular and commercially successful acts.

Editorial Reviews
THE DEEP END demonstrates that the band's spirit of exploration is still very much alive. Indeed, it's thriving.
