I am not going to bore you with how well directed this is, what the actors have been in before etc etc. This is just a great film to just sit and watch. The chases make you feel is if you are there. The story line is believable and if you watch the film with your other half it is not complicated and you wont get somebody saying 'whats going on' etc. The only thing I would say is to watch the 1st film before seeing this one.

  The Bourne Supremacy (DVD 2005)

A brisk, engrossing and intelligent thriller, The Bourne Supremacy stars Matt Damon as amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne, pulled back into the spy game when a Russian killer (Karl Urban) tracks him down in India. Fleeing the haven he's found with girlfriend Marie (Franka Potente), Bourne sprints and scraps his way around Europe, trying to discover why the CIA is out to get him. Meanwhile, Joan Allen's hard-nosed government spook uncovers the secrets of agency-within-the-agency Treadstone and butts heads with shady veteran Brian Cox...

As with franchise-starter The Bourne Identity (which belied bad buzz to become a big hit), this is a studio production with an indie sensibility. It is not overly complex, but neither is it patronising in the manner of many mainstream movies which emphasise every plot point to exhaustion. Paul Greengrass - the British director behind Bloody Sunday - treats the audience with respect, while the action is lent immediacy by his preference for in-your-face handheld camera work (the air is always heavy with the suggestion of violence).

"DAMON IS ONE HELL OF AN ACTION HERO"

And Damon is one hell of an action hero. He does a lot with very little, imbuing his limited dialogue with both rage and sorrow, looking harder and more haunted as the picture progresses. The bloody, brutal magazine fight (you'll see) is as original as the first film's painful pen battle, but even the more outrageous action is invested with an unusual degree of realism (when you're shot, it hurts; when you fall, you limp).

The driving score by John Powell is expertly mixed with impressively ear-pounding sound effects; issues of moral choice and responsibility are examined; and Tony Gilroy's script gives Cox a particularly pertinent political speech. In all, plenty of reasons to hope for Bourne again.

The film is an excellent follow on to the first installment. Matt damon could not have played this tormented assasin any better if he tried. Not only is this a rollercoaster of emotions for Bourne after losing his partner, But as he plays out his revenge he is also plauged with flash backs from his broken memory. I found this gripping entertainment ok no oscars would be in danger but as a guy i cant help but love the feel to this movie.
The only down side is that there has not been a third part yet.

The Bourne Supremacy is a serviceable thriller - no more, no less. This may come as a disappointment to those anticipating something on the same level as the surprise hit 2002 movie, The Bourne Identity. Sadly, the cinematic second installment of Robert Ludlum's trilogy falls short of its predecessor in almost every area, except perhaps acting. There's nothing wrong with any of the performances in this movie; it's just that the actors aren't as important as they were two years ago. Action has moved to the fore, shouldering aside plot and character development in order to maintain the frantic pace that director Paul Greengrass believes is necessary to retain his audience's attention.

The Bourne Supremacy opens two years after The Bourne Identity closed, with Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) having settled down with his girlfriend, Marie (Franka Potente, of Run Lola Run fame). Now, it appears someone with the worst of intentions has found them. Not only is a killer (Karl Urban) dispatched remove Bourne, but he is framed for the murder of a CIA agent in Berlin. This brings the agency back into the picture. The "find Bourne" team is led by Pamela Landy (Joan Allen) and Bourne's old boss, Ward Abbott (Brian Cox). Thinking that the CIA is behind the attempt on his life, Bourne decides that the most appropriate response is to track down a few old acquaintances and remove them forever from the picture, thus fulfilling the promise he made near the end of The Bourne Identity.

At its heart, The Bourne Supremacy is a revenge picture. There's nothing more subtle or deeper going on here, although there is a secondary plot about a group of Russians. Character development is perfunctory. We learn a few more things about Bourne's past, and he shows signs of a conscience. However, he was more interesting in the last film, when he was foundering to discover who he was. This time around, Bourne is just a relentless killer, at least until the final 30 minutes, when he displays more compassion than we expect (or, in some ways, prefer).

After the initial 15 minutes of exposition, The Bourne Supremacy unfolds as a series of long chase and fight sequences. Some of these are more compelling than others. The final chase, in particular, is involving. Coming as late in the movie as it does, there's a sense that it will lead to a resolution (rather than the usual "oops, I lost him"). There are plenty of instances of hand-to-hand combat, and that's where the choice of Greengrass (Bloody Sunday) becomes questionable. The director of The Bourne Identity, Doug Liman, was able to present the fight scenes in a clear, no-frills fashion. In The Bourne Supremacy, there are so many cuts and edits that the fights devolve into an incoherent mess. It's better not to try to follow them when they're going on - just wait until they're over to see who's left standing.

On a number of levels, The Bourne Supremacy isn't as satisfying as The Bourne Identity. The culmination of Bourne's revenge spree against the agency, while it accomplishes the task, doesn't offer a good sense of closure. And the fact that Bourne spends most of the movie on his own eliminates the nice give-and-take between Bourne and Marie that helped make The Bourne Identity better than a generic espionage flick. Not having read Ludlum's novel, I can't assess whether the problem is in the source material or in Tony Gilroy's adaptation, but The Bourne Supremacy is less intelligent than its predecessor.

Very smart, complicated spy thriller that you will not get bored of watching.
as it draws you in to its enticing storyline that keeps you interested.
since jason bourne has no recolection of his past it gave ludlum a blank slate to write with and due to this the movie has many twists and turns.

There's a reason the Bourne movies are attracting comparisons to the Bond movies though what seems to interest people more are the differences. As the bloated Bond films give you an oily Hally Berry, Lazer watches and an invisible Aston Martin - The Bourne Supremacy gives you a hysterical sobbing Julia Stiles, a roled up newspaper and a burnt out taxi in some debunked communist state. It's hardly glamourous but it's brutally effective and far more thrilling.
While anyone who's not a shady CIA spy would sound ridiculous calling it 'realistic' the average joe can still find intense satisfaction in the films logicality. What happens when two men are trained to the very peak of physical strength and have mastered completely a devistating martial art? They fight like school boys, that's what, each one's ability cancelling out the other's and they scuffle around an apartment desperatley trying to get the other into some sort of strangle hold, this is where the aforementioned rolled up magazine comes in.

It's also refreshing to see a film pretty much devoid of a Hollywood Love interest, Bourne's previous squeeze Marie is put out of the picture early on and when you think he's about to subject Julia Stiles to a steamy case of Stockholm syndrome, Bourne interrogates her to a point of sheer terror. The closest Bourne comes to any kind of affection is towards Pamela Landy, the very woman who is chasing him.

Acting is uniformly superb, new cast members like Joan Allen and Karl Urban fit right in to this kind of work and returning characters show no sign of getting stale, Brain Cox in particular is a real joy to watch but that's something you come to expect from one of the best actors around.

  The Ultimate Bourne Box Set
Review created: 15/01/08

Ultimate is definitely the word. Jason Bourne has reinvigorated the action genre, and set the standard for all Hollywood blockbusters. Each Title tells you exactly what you are getting, and most of it will be delivered to your ears and retinas through the medium of Bourne kicking loads of ass, be it in India, France, New York, or anywhere across the globe.

What makes Bourne so great though, is that unlike most fodder that Hollywood usually churns out, the high octane action here actually means something: He regrets his past, and he doesn't wreck havoc unless he has to. Bourne is a tortured soul, trying to find answers. The trilogy of films sees him come to terms with himself, then confront his enemies (usually with something he found lying around in their house), and the demons within himself, whilst the CIA (amongst many others) try to stop him for good.

The Series goes well beyond what is typical of the action genre to deliver a story with a brain, that has a coherent narrative, and a grounded main character. It's a darker and a grittier than anything that has come before it, and Casino Royale is a wonderful example of its already huge influence. Bourne has redefined action cinema, with his fistfights and his car chases. The presence of the man who could not remember his past will be felt long into the future on our cinema screens.

This is the second part of a trilogy and explodes into action from the start, setting up the storyline of the film and it's conclusion in Ultimatum. Matt Damon is at his best as Bourne. You just keep thinking, is he going to remember? Must see film, must see trilogy. Best films that have been out in years.
