Album Notes While not nearly up to the goofy, caustic majesty of THE POWER OF PUSSY, this disc still finds Ann Magnuson--actress, performance artist, and writer--and musician/producer Kramer up to their usual shenanigans. The vision of Magnuson and Kramer (and a few assorted friends), Bongwater synthesizes rock, folk idioms, '60s psychedelia, and an unerring hipster sensibility into a wild, postmodern, tongue-in-cheek art project. Titles like "Free Love Messes Up My Life," "Over The Credit Line," and "Her Litigious Nature" give some indication of the group's intelligent, surreal, half-comedic/half-critical take on things.Magnuson's ambling narratives are part dream-journal and part social satire. The highlights of the album find her adopting personae and roles while passing the whole act off as a stand-up routine. While Kramer's genre-splicing recombinant aesthetic may test the patience of "serious" music lovers, his self-deprecating style is part of what makes this group so appealing. Bongwater is the ultimate political, literary, style-melting joke-rock art project, and THE BIG SELL OUT captures the band in typically prankster-ish form.
