Saw this film at the cinema and really enjoyed it so bought it on DVD. Danny Boyle who directed Trainspotting done a great job with The Beach. The DVD comes with a big choice of special features. Directors commentary

Leonardo Di Caprio stars as Richard, an American backpacker who wants to see more than the tourist side of Thailand. Richard wants adventure and excitement. He meets up with a bloke called Daffy in his Hostel who seems abit crazy and Daffy gives Richard a map. The map is to an Island which is supposed to be really beautiful and off the beaten track. When Richard then meets a French Couple they decide to go and check the Island out. To see if such a place does exist. What happens next is a journey down a road of discovery, love, passion, death, hope, fear and danger.

The film is one hell of a crazy ride and has a fab soundtrack too( Own it on CD). Caprio is 10 out of 10 in this film and the scenery is breathtaking. This is a film you must add to your DVD collection as it is action packed and well worth watching again and again.

  Love this film!

One definite plus of this screen adaptation is Di Caprio's performance: forget all teen girls' hysterics and press gossip about him, he's a class actor, up there with the best, though he's got to be careful not to overdo it and become an over-the-top De Niro at such a young age and stage of his career.
I loved The Beach: the romance of it, the tropical and breathtakingly beautiful scenary and Leonardo's perceptive illustration of the way in which separation from society brings out the animal in us. An adult movie variation on William Golding's Lord of the Flies.
The story is of an American traveller,Richard (Di Caprio) and his chance meeting with Daffy (a cameo by Robert Carlyle)
in a hotel.Daffy gives him a map of a secret island where paradise can be found and Richard soon tells the story to two
French travellers and they all head of in search of the island, but when they get there the paradise soon turns into a
nightmare and for Richard his mind starts to lose control.
The only bit i find rubbish is the part were di caprio is like in a computer game mode.

Garland's novel centers on a young nicotine-addicted traveler named Richard, an avid pop-culture buff with a particular love for video games and Vietnam War movies. While at a hotel in Bangkok, he finds a map left by his strange, whacked-out neighbor, who just committed suicide. The map supposedly leads to a legendary island paradise where some other wayward souls have settled

  Better for its scenery

Not a bad film acting wise but for the location of the film, I think everbody would love to be able to live on that island. You may not get all the creature comforts you would at home, but the peace and tranquility along with the views would more than make up for missing the T.V.

After reading the book I wanted to see how the film compared. This film is very good, howeverm it does not compare to the book as they essentially have different meanings.
Leonardo DiCaprio, however, is excellent as the main character "Richard".

Im usually disappointed when I watch a movie after reading the book first but this one wasnt too bad. The imagery was how I imagined it even though the ending was a bit different. One to watch with a glass of wine and a packet of peanuts when you want to unwind!

Truely beautiful island. I've been to Maya Bay where the filming took place and I fell in love with the Thai islands after watching this film. A must see for everyone! Great acting and unusual story.

What an existance. this is how life should be, perhaps without Sal...?
The books great too slightly different from the film but a must!
Shame that the whole concept has helped in the demise of 'old' Thailand

Escapism - The Beach (DVD 2000)
Review created: 01/10/08
by:

I love the film THE BEACH because it has a good main actor Leonardo DiCaprio, strong supporting roles by others (Tilda Swinton & Robert Carlyle), it has an escapist quality about it, to escape the world and its rules, jobs, mortgages, stuffy offices etc, it also has an innocence, the idea you could just go to the beach, sunbathe, laze around like one fantastic holiday, forget time and the rest of the world.

However even at the beach, things are not so simple, people bring their rules with them and gradually paradise is lost, slowly eroded as the characters feel their own values and humanity disolving.

What i didn't like about it was that it ended !!

I bought it because i wanted to keep the Beach with me.

let the sun shine :->

Bear in Mind the book is one of my favourites ever.
The film is OK, with the exception of the beach, the film could not be further from the book unfortunately.
Characters missing, story completely different in parts.
Even so, great soundtrack, good cast, good entertainment.
If you have read the book howevere, dont watch with any expectations apart from to be dissapointed.

Not a very nice story about not very nice people
Review created: 03/05/08

This is an nteresting commentary on the tourist trade, but a mere shadow of the book, which I rememeber affected me deeply. I think it is difficult to feel good about the story or the film as everybody in it is so intensely unlikable. This book, while critiquing the horrible Brit-Abroad mass tourism behaviour ("Chunky Charlies"), has ironically become the perpetrator of its own much-hated practices; on a diving trip to Koh Phi Phi in the Andaman sea, where this was filmed, we saw no less than 4 huge boats of tourists heading "to see where The Beach was filmed". Really it has just made me feel worse about the way I am seen as a tourist in Thailand and left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
If you buy it, the advantage to this DVD is that you get to see the alternative ending and beginning in the extras; and they are a lot better than those they chose to put in the movie. In fact, I was left wondering why most of the deleted scenes were deleted.

  Review of The Beach
Review created: 01/04/08

This is a great film from the British director of 28 days later, Danny Boyle and based on the book by Alex Garland. Ok its not a patch on the book but the film is very well made, exciting and its in my opinion a modern classic. Well acted and the screenplay is well written (although there are 3 different endings to this story, the film has the most boring of the 3!!!)

I think this film contains all that is required for a good decent movie. There are tense moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat but also comedy, action and romance.
All in all a very good film.

  Stunning scenery
Review created: 15/01/08

I haven't watched this film for ages but had it bought for christmas.

It's a really good film with the excitement of travelling to far out places, mixed with fear of the outside world. It is a bit gory in places but this can be overcome by the beautiful scenery! Plus Leonard Dicaprio is cute when he is younger.

A film that can be enjoyed by both men and women, I would give it a watch if you are into travel and scenery.
