When my Megxon C580 arrived I was immediately impressed with its professional look but concerned that my limited knowledge of photography would make it difficult to get the best out of it. However, the instruction book was easy to follow and I was soon producing some remarkable photos. The 8 times optical feature is about as good as it gets.

The supplier in Essex was a plesasure to deal with and gave me some great tips over the phone. Highly recommended and a bargain price.

  Megxon C580 - Don't believe the naysayers..

Before I took the plunge with this camera I did a bit of reading up, and was somewhat disheartened with the negative views a number of buyers seemed to have about this device. There seemed to be plenty of people rubbishing the item, and yet Praktica were happy to put their name to it (Praktica 5008) - so, who was right?

The first thing I noticed was that the naysayers views on this camera were extremely subjective - one described the camera as being made from "cr*ppy plastic" whilst another named his camera the "Cr*ppycam". Nobody could actually say that the camera was bad because of any specific feature, and I was left with the impression that the owners felt embarrassed about purchasing a device with little apparent "sex appeal."

In my opinion, the camera is reasonably well finished and is almost up to the standards of more notable brands - I should know, I have a bit of a camera collection...

Bits I like about the Megxon C580
1) Excellent zoom.
2) Flash is just about spot on.
3) Loads of program modes, including full manual override as well as aperture and shutter priority.
4) Despite having loads of features, the camera is easy to use and includes an "idiot" mode for people like me.
5) Good lens, able to take some quality pictures.

Bits I didn't like
1) Camera is a bit uncomfortable to hold due to its boxy shape.
2) You have to remember to take the lens cap off before powering the camera up.
3) The lens extends to its full length when powered up, regardless of how much zoom you are using. This means that the lens is as long whether you are going for wide angle shots or extreme telephoto pictures.
4) You can't use filters on the camera.
5) After sales support - although you get a 12 month manufacturers warranty with the camera, the warranty card is written using far eastern pictograms (I couldn't say if it was Chinese or Japanese) - I assume that you would have to send the whole lot back to the far east for servicing in the event of any problems.
6) Focussing can be a bit slow, and there is no manual focus option.
7) For some reason my camera seem a bit reticent about powering on and off, but I think that this is just my camera.

Overall
I'm impressed with the camera, and would recommend it. It is more flexible than a "compact" DCS bit and bridges the chasm between them and the "Professional" digital cameras.

An excellent camera, really pleased with the results, having used this for approx 7 months. Excellent picture quality, loads of things one can do with this, ideal for someone who wants to take a step further from the "point and shoot" stage. Megapixal for this camera varies from 8 - 10 mp and the zoom is an absolute bonus if you like to do wildlife pictures. I bought this one for the reason I could either use the screen at the back or look through the lens.
Anybody trying this camera would not be disappointed in the results etc. which can be obtained.

Bridge Digital Camera: good for ebay photos.
Review created: 23/04/07

Love
...the way nobody has heard of the brand, but it sells. Unfortunately the camera doesn't yet have a review on Wikipedia or dpreview. If it did it would fit into Wikipedia's "Bridge Digital Camera" category, which is worth a look.

Like
...manual white balance and some pre-sets make this perfect for ebay photos. You can cancel out the hue that an automatic colour balance adds to backgrounds, even if you're using an odd combination of lights. I'm using some rather odd fluerescent bulbs that are meant to be colour balanced but still have a peak of green in the colour. This camera seems able to cope, if I photograph something white in the same light and work out how to use colour balance.
...big lense. I've never noticed any problems with blur or distortion.
...through the lense viewfinder for WISYWIG, by default to a screen on the back.
...option of looking through an eye-piece for the viewfinder, if there's light behind you or you want to save batteries
...histogramme should tell me to adjust for light, when I learn how. Press the 5-way switch upwards to show the histogramme.
...option to save fix a focus, or to focus on a spot or a large area. Focus by half-pressing the photo button.

Dislike
...lacks the toughness and kit-form of the SLR cameras it looks like. For example you cannot change the lense. And mine stopped working after I dropped it, although the UK distributors were fine about the guarentee.
...big for a pocket. If I wanted a cheap 5 megabyte camera to carry around I wouldn't choose something this shape.
...takes a second longer to point-and-shoot than a single-focus slim camera.
...the manual is what it is: have a look on megxon.com/techsupp/download/C580/C580_supp for the download
and see if you can work out how to do a manual appature or shutter speed adjustment. This is a criticism of all digital camera manuals I think: they tend to hurl features at you in no particular pattern or order and sometimes simply don't make sense. If the UK importers manage to write some FAQ pages for this camera it would be a help.
...overwhelming features. Do I really need built-in speakers and a video record function when I'm struggling to tweak the settings at all? This is both a like and a dislike. Some of the really useful filters, like pre-sets for taking photos in different sorts of light, are a little fiddlier to find because of the gimmikey filters like a blue tint.

Not reviewed
...I've never tried the "Ulead" software for transfer, image editing and something called "Cool 360". Maybe this can cope with any raw image formats the camera is able to take. A web search for The Gimp and Infranview should find you a free editor and laptop-size viewer, if you don't like the Ulead stuff, so software shouldn't be a worry when you choose a camera. There is also a version of The Gimp that tries to share menu layouts with Photoshop.

...Charger / Mains adaptor (6v 2a small round plug). This has to be bought separately, but the camera takes standard AA batteries like a Walkman, so you've quite likely got a set and a charger already.
