Having enjoyed their debut album so much I was really excited to learn 'The Teardrop Explodes' had released a second album and bought it straight away.
Listening to it again in order to write this review makes me think what great taste I had back then. No, seriously, more than 25 years of musical evolution have not taken the shine off this jewel of an album. Nor off the CD I bought 10 years after that.
All the trademark features are there; The solid drum beat, peculiar melodies, unusual instrumental choices, Julian Cope's quirky lyrics and distinctive vocal style (although he does seem to have acquired a camper sound) and, of course, trumpets. Lots of Trumpets!
'Bent Out Of Shape', 'Colours Fly Away', 'Seven Views Of Jerusalum', 'Tiny Children', 'Passionate Friend', 'Just Like Leila Kahled Said', 'Pure Joy', '.....and The Fighting Takes Over' and 'The Great Dominions' are the best tracks on the album. (Oh, for God's sake, tbod - they ARE the whole album!)
I really can't decide on any one as my overall favourite, they are all as good as each other.
The only track I don't really like is 'The Culture Bunker' and even that is packed full of clever lyrics you just have to appreciate. And it's got a pretty good tune too. Oh alright, I don't like it that much and it's not my favourite but I can't say it's a bad track.
So. 'Wilder'. 11 tracks, 40 minutes.
I think a number of their best ever tracks are on this album but, overall, it just lacks the cohesiveness of 'Kilimanjaro' and fails to acheive their true potential. A real shame.
'The Teardrop Explodes' - You either love 'em or you hate 'em and, for some reason, this album was slated at the time of its release. Even though 'Passionate Friend' (the only single release) did reasonably well in the charts 'Wilder' was to be their final album. Julian Cope called it a day and embarked on a solo career.
Sadly, there are no cover notes or lyrics with the CD which was a real disappointment to me as I love lyrics (see my other reviews). Thank God I have the album...
This is a good album but not a great album. It is definitely a CD worth having but if you can only have one of theirs it would have to be 'Kilimanjaro'.
As an aside, my CD has a different cover from that shown above but the same part number. What's that all about?

) I already had the vinyl album and loved it. Like most vinyls though, my copy had quite a lot of surface noise. This was particularly annoying when listening to the beautifully simple "Tiny Children" So, I looked for a CD copy and got this one for less than a Fiver inc. P&P. Although some of the tracks on the CD fade a little quicker than on the vinyl album, the mix is pretty much the same. Well worth buying as I enjoy the CD version much more. I'll have to keep the vinyl album for the lyrics though.
